St. John Paul II (connued)
Following his elecon, Pope John Paul II immediately began his ministry as Universal Pastor of the Church. During his papacy he made 146 pastoral visits in Italy; as the Bishop of Rome, he visited 317 of 322 parishes. He made 104 apostolic journeys to 129 coun- tries. His internaonal presence influenced the removal of Communism from Eastern Europe, and he worked toward healing the divi- sion between the world’s major religions. He established World Youth Day, which aracted millions of youth from around the world.
In May 1981, he survived an assassinaon aempt in St. Peter’s Square. “In everything that happened to me on that day, I felt (the Mother of God’s) extraordinary motherly protecon and care, which turned out to be stronger than the deadly bullet,” he said. A er a lengthy recovery, he visited his would-be assassin in prison and forgave him.
Pope John Paul II principal wrings included 14 encyclicals, 15 apostolic exhortaons, 11 apostolic constuons, and 45 apostolic leers, plus the catechesis delivered in lectures and homilies. He also wrote five books: Crossing the Threshold of Hope (1996); Gi and Mystery: On the Fi ieth Anniversary of My Priestly Ordinaon (1996); Roman Triptych, Meditaons in Poetry (2003); Rise, Let Us Be on Our Way (2004); and Memory and Identy (2005).
