Term 1 Newsletter  2019

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Settlers Family

The end of a rollercoaster Term 1 is upon us. The 2019 theme RISE (No limits) has certainly been evident this term echoing the values of Resilience, Integrity, Selflessness and Effort.

Term 1 started with two special moments in the assembly on the first day - we welcomed a new cohort of grade 8’s (the matric class of 1923) and celebrated the NSC with the top 15 grade 12’s of 2018 by awarding them academic honours for receiving an A-aggregate. Top academic, the 2018 school Dux, Beatrice Mwamba, shared her success story with the school encouraging them to always give of their best.

RESILIENCE and EFFORT are words I can attribute to almost every learner and staff member at our school. Just imagine excruciatingly hot days singing, dancing and practising in preparation for Interhouse swimming gala and athletics, and the big one, Interschools. I remember some proud moments this term – firstly on the day of Interhouse athletics it poured with rain, but the harder it rained, the more soaked we were, the louder we cheered, and secondly on the day of Interschools athletics, watching the school compete in extreme heat for the cheerleading and the spirit cup – what amazing energy from a dedicated learner body that loved what they were doing.

Term 1 reports were handed out on Friday and will reflect your child’s current academic standing. The EFFORT is evident as the results across the grades are good in general, but it is important to identify subjects that need remedial work, and we request that parents please make contact with the relevant teachers. Please use the opportunity to engage with the teachers at the parent interview evening and book your appointments using the online booking system.

We received many awards this term celebrating our excellent results. Recognition by the universities as a ‘Top Feeder School’ is an important accolade cementing the ethos of TSHS of a balanced education, focussing on all the pillars of the school, not just academics. Other notable academic awards include NSC Awards for 80% + Bachelors Pass, 90-99% Pass Rate and Top Ten Public Schools in MNED. For the Systemic Awards we received recognition for Excellence in Mathematics (80-90%) and English (90-99%) as well as another award for Top Ten Public Schools (3rd) in MNED. Congratulations to the teachers and learners for making these awards possible.

All the hard work that went into the term is made possible by a dedicated team of people, and I wish to sincerely thank each staff member (teaching staff, administrative staff and amenities staff) for the important role they play in the lives of the learners of TSHS.

It is time to have a short rest and rejuvenate, take care and have and blessed holiday.

PASTORAL (Mrs Hall)

We started this year with the launch of the theme RISE for 2019, by Mr Smuts, and each learner received a set of 4 beads representing the 4 values for the year with a star attached signifying that as we Rise we reach for the Stars.

R - RESILIENCE I - INTEGRITY S - SELFLESSNESS E - EFFORT

The leadership shown by the prefects of 2019 in the planning of the theme is impressive.

Excellent discipline and teamwork was displayed during the Inter-house Gala, Inter-house Athletics and Interschools Athletics. The learners displayed exemplary behaviour, a positive spirit and pride in our school at all these events. This was also underpinned with us winning the Cheer Leaders and the Spirit Cup at the Interschools Athletics.

All the grades had parent evenings this term where Grade Heads and Class Educators had the opportunity to meet parents and to set the boundaries for the year. These meetings are always invaluable in connecting parents and educators and we wish to thank parents for their interest and support in this partnership.

RCL Tuesday 12 February 2019 was the formal induction ceremony for the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) for 2019:

Grade 8 Duncan Adams, Esther Kamonga, Nothando Mkhize Grade 9 Noel Best, Kelly Damon, Jaydon Maragele Grade 10 Mercy Fatoba, Lisalize Mketho, Thithina Vooi Grade 11 Danielle Carolus (Secretary), Yentl Meyer (Treasurer), Mafuza-Fulele Mvunelo Grade 12 Alizwa Mleni (Chairperson), Sangwani Khimbi (Vice Chairperson), Marlin Adams

School Council which consists of RCL and Prefects (45 learner leaders) as well as the School Executive committee and Management committees (30 teachers) met on Monday 11 March 2019. The role the learners play in Council is impressive and invaluable and the confidence with which matters are debated is commendable. Proposals that are currently up for debate are recommendations that adjustments be made to our sport uniform to try to standardize it and make it less expensive for parents. A Transformation and Diversity committee was established and changes to the drug policy were work-shopped.

ANTI BULLYING/TOLERANCE CAMPAIGN On Thursday 14 March we launched our anti bullying/tolerance campaign for Term 2 with a visit by Ms Schäfer, the Education MEC, and Carl Wastie. The theme of their presentation was “Raise your Voice, not your phone” addressing the issue that the person filming and posting bullying incidents is guilty of cyberbullying. We as educators and parents need to build our children so that they know their value, as that makes them strong to stand up to anyone putting them down.

CLASS REPRESENTATIVES The Class representatives for all the grade are also now fully functional.

Grade 8 Jamy Williams, Mia Fortuin, Elijah Bowers, Tara Ariefdien, Kirsty Ludick, Ashton Julius, Hannah Petersen, Mia Scheepers, Arianne Cupido

The Leadership Training camp for Class Representatives and RCL members is being held at Ihlati Bushcamp at the end of Term 1. The theme for the camp is “Six Attitudes of Good Leaders.” This camp creates an opportunity for the leadership in the different grades to bond and get to know each other as well as develop some leadership skills. The purpose of the camp is to develop a strong base of leaders from Grade 8 upwards.

SAFETY OF LEARNERS The safety of the learners early in the mornings and after school in the afternoons is a concern and all learners must wait inside the school perimeter after 15:00. No learners may sit at the Fairfield gate near the Astro at any time as we have had learners being robbed there. No learner should walk to or be alone at the station or in the streets at the back of the school in Oostersee.

Please talk to your children regarding the use of their cellphones on the way home as this invites opportunistic thieves and could have dire consequences.

We have also had a spate of bag thefts and the learners have been instructed to keep their bags with them at all times. Please assist us by making sure all items are clearly marked.

PEER COUNSELLORS We have 18 trained peer counsellors this year. These learners are available for peer counselling as may be required.

Peer Counsellors: Nicole Bosman, Leo May, Dorothy Muya, Mikayla Sprout

Peer Counsellor Trainees: Jesse Davids, Alex Moses, Kyle Meyer, Khonkco Twalo, Joshe Theys, Sihlumile Mgada, Zoe van Rensburg, Rizia Solomons, Yentl Meyer

UNIFORM The branded school rain jacket is being phased out as part of our endeavor to reduce uniform costs to parents. A plain navy blue drimac/raincoat available from any supplier will be allowed to be worn over the blazer when it rains. These rain jackets will not be allowed to be worn inside the school building.

The official change over to winter uniform will be Monday 6 May 2019. Please use the holidays to check that your child’s winter uniform still fits and that the dresses are not too short. The holiday is also a good time to ensure that all articles that are brought to school are clearly labelled as lost property remains a perpetual problem.

SOCIAL WORKER The appointment of Ms Frieslaar, a qualified social worker, has been an invaluable addition to our counselling department. She does not teach and is full time, not only available to see the children regarding problems, but also to give guidance regarding studying as well as career guidance.

Please encourage your children to make use of this service. Ms Frieslaar can be contact on  021 9486116 or [email protected].

SPORT (Mrs Basheer)

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS Every year, the Interhouse athletics competition is hotly contested, and this year was no different. It is always such a pleasure to see our athletes giving their best at an event that promotes sportsmanship and healthy competition. With the rain pouring harder and harder the singing grew louder and louder. The true spirit of The Settlers High School was evident as all three houses joined in joyfulness as they sang this year’s school medley.

The following athletes were crowned this year’s Victor and Victrix ludorums of their respective age groups.

U14 Kannemeyer (Shaw) Kimmi Collins (Bain) U15 Share: Daniel Reuter (Bain) & Noel Best (Bain) Lindi Schroeder (Shaw) U17 Kyle Zinn (Bain) Lisa Gabriels (Bain) U19 Nigel Nyashanu (Pringle) Sarah Isaacs (Bain)

This year Pringle House won the competition with the individual accolades being spread around the houses. Hopefully next year the standard can be raised higher with the aim of winning the Interschools competition again.

INTERSCHOOLS ATHLETICS This year, the Interschools event took place at Dal Josafat in Paarl on 8 February. The athletics was as hot as the weather. Although The Settlers did not win this year, it was encouraging that we won three of the individual awards. Victor Ludorum trophies were won by Simeon Reuter (boys U15), Kyle Zinn (boys U17) and Nigel Nyashanu (boys U19).

BASKETBALL Basketball, being one of our biggest sports had a bag of mixed results this term. Results for the season thus far are.

We wish to congratulate Trinity Hercules on her achievement as she was part of the Western Cape Team in December last year that won the Basketball championship. You are indeed a champion. Well done.

CRICKET We would like to welcome Mr Barkhuysen and Mr Morilly to our cricket family. These two young, energetic coaches are going to add great value to our respective teams and we look forward to the progress our under 14A and 15A teams are going to make under their leadership.

The 2019 cricket started off in high spirit. The boys were very eager to play and attended all their practices as they did not get any game time in the second half of the 2018 season.

The cricket season started at a low as the effects of the drought was still visible at a few schools that made it difficult for them to obtain a team or a field. The Settlers High School although were ready and willing to start the season on a high as the first official match of the season was against Parow High School. This match was seen as a chance for the team to redeem themselves from the previous year’s loss and turned it around they did. A brilliant 50 partnership between Enrique Davidson (68) and Damon Joseph (18) brought the team out of the ashes from 13/6 to 155 all out.

Cricket is a sport that requires dedication, patience and intense concentration. The boys at The Settlers High take cricket very seriously and show remarkable enthusiasm, spirit and skill on the pitch. It is however our bowlers and fielders who stood out in this match. We bowled Parow out for only 72 runs. Damon Joseph took 3 wickets in 4 overs, Nicholas Engelbrecht took 2 wickets in 2 overs and Chad Naidoo took 2 wickets in 5 overs. The boys continued in this high spirited mode in their match against Fairbairn. The Settlers High batted first and scored 238 runs. Cedwyn Lambert contributed 116 runs in this match and Tristan Theys scored 50 runs. We bowled Fairbairn out for only 194 runs.

We say farewell to some very dedicated matric boys who have been in the first team for two or more seasons. At the same time we welcome the new blood to the team who have already proved that they are able to take up their place in the team. All of the best to the boys with the last leg of 2019 in term four.

The bowlers got on the field with the same determination and bowled Parow out for 72 runs thanks to Damon Joseph for the bowling figures of 8/3 in 4 overs, supported by Nicolas Engelbrecht (4 overs, 8/2) and Chad Naidoo (5.4 overs 11/2). Damon Joseph was given man of the match.

The third match against High School was a league fixture and The Settlers High needed to win. The Settlers High School elected to bat first but alas the batting fell short of the set target due to a very disciplined and accurate bowling performance by Edgemead and restricted The Settlers to 100 all out. The top scorer for the innings was Keenan Cupido with a gritty 35 runs not out. After the innings the 1st team received their caps which put the team into high gear. They took to the field and bowled for 25 overs before Edgemead got to the winning runs (101/4). The Settlers High lost by 6 wickets but still ended the season although disappointed in their loss, in high spirits. Damon Joseph (7 overs, 19/2) supported by a returning to bowling form Teano Maregele (5 overs, 16/1). This was an amazing season that tested the gents body, mind and spirit. The Settlers High School family is very proud of the players as they have set the tone for the season to come. Well done and thanks to all for a memorable season.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations go out to Venisha Dietrich who recently passed out as a seaman and was part of the Armed Forces Day.

We also congratulate Diego Hugo and wish him well as travels to Dallas in the USA to participate in the Annual International Youth Football Tournament for his club Ikape United.

BOYS SUMMER LEAGUE HOCKEY Boys’ summer league hockey has had a fruitful season with many new grade 8 boys joining the sport. The aim this season has been to develop the basic skills of the boys as well as challenge them to learn the more tactical aspects of the sport. We had one highlight in particular, with our first team winning 2-1 against Bellville High School. It was a dominant performance, showing the growth within the boys system. We hope for a successful upcoming winter season for the sport of hockey for 2019.

SOFTBALL Only two teams entered to play league matches:

1st team played against , Malibu and 2nd team of Settlers. 2nd team played against Bishop Lavis, Malibu, 1st team Settlers, Fairbairn and Elsies River. 1st team lost against Bishop Lavis and Malibu and won their match against 2nd team of The Settlers. The 2nd team unfortunately lost all their games. It was a difficult season for our two teams this year as they played in one of highest leagues.

SWIMMING At our annual gala this year, with stroke after stroke, records were thrashed as our first team swimmers showed what they were made of. The following swimmers broke long standing records.

Ricardo Croy Boys U15 50m Breaststroke Tyla Amos Boys U16 50m Breaststroke Peter-John Joseph Boys U19 50m Backstroke

Pringle House once again, for a second year in a row, took both the Trophy winning with a margin of 143 points as well as the spirit stick.

Swimming has had a fine first term with us competing in 4 galas and many swimmers achieving 1st places. Our squad has increased to nearly 40 swimmers who swim every morning from 6 till 7 and then again on Tuesday afternoons. The commitment of the swimmers is to be commended. The coaches Mr Leigh Frantz and Mr Jody Frantz are very committed and have assisted in increasing the fitness of the swimmers, stroke correction and motivation. They were so impressed with the commitment of the Settlers team they treated them all to McDonalds after the last practice.

Some highlights of the term are:

Megan Bulose: WC U15 selection and swam in East London. Tyla Amos: WC U15 selection- made the finals of all his events

YOGA Yoga is alive and well! It is fantastic to note the media coverage that yoga is receiving. Yoga programmes are being used in prisons and being brought into areas that are gangster ridden and full of violence. There is a call to make yoga part of the curriculum in the primary schools as part of body movement, and here at The Settlers High School we have been at it for the past 4 years.

At the beginning of 2019, Rolaine Paterson bid us farewell as her business needed her time and full commitment. However, she did not leave us high and dry, as she provided us with one of her employees and prodigies, Ms Gabriella-Shay Struwig, as our new yoga instructress. She is a young, vibrant woman who is passionate about yoga and working with the youth. She has brought her abilities, passion and dedication to the learners since the beginning of 2019 and the learners have responded well to her. We look forward to her tutelage and we hope it will be a long, fun-filled relationship.

At the Sports Awards Ceremony at the end of Term 1, the Team Award was awarded to the following learners who showed their commitment and dedication for the summer season which stretches from Term 4 of 2018 to Term 1 of 2019. This requirement is based on attendance and participation.

 Chandré Claassen (92% attendance and participation)  Kirsten Johnson (100% attendance and participation)  Andrea October (100% attendance and participation)

One must remember that Yoga is not a competitive sport, therefore the criteria for the award can only be calculated on learners’ attendance and participation which must be 90% or higher and serves as a measure of commitment and dedication to yoga.

What are the short and long term goals of yoga? We want learners to become fully fledged yogis – not only practicing yoga at school, but also at home. We want yoga to become part of the learners’ daily lives, carrying on beyond high school. The aim is to use yoga to bring peace and harmony to the mind, body and soul so that learners can manage and/or overcome stress, negative thoughts and feelings.

We look forward to a fun-filled 2019 and to bring serenity to the mind, body and soul.

CULTURE (Mr H Smuts)

The first term was, as usual, a busy and exciting cultural term at The Settlers.

ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL The term started with the annual One Act Play festival. Besides selecting and directing a play, Grade 12 directors had to create a poster for online publication, create a movie trailer to be shown during assembly and all house members were encouraged to use social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram) to show support for their houses.

The Grade 12 directors were: BAIN: Kiara Lottering and Caelin Thyssen (Play title: “Stereotype High”) PRINGLE: Estee Truter and Joshé Theys (Play title: “The People”) SHAW: Mikayla Sprout and Leo May (Play title: “Curl up and die”)

All three houses staged entertaining and well-rehearsed productions. The results were: Best Actress Shawna Anthony (Shaw) Best Supporting Actress Danielle Lamour (Shaw) Best Actor Imtiaaz Parker (Bain) Best Supporting Actor Ricky Wynand (Pringle) Best Backstage Crew Shaw Social Media Bain Best Production Shaw

Congratulations to all the learners involved in this successful event.

SOCIETY HOUR This year, The Settlers learners can choose from a variety of 32 different cultural activities. All these activities were launched during the Cultural assembly at the start of the year and learners signed up enthusiastically to participate in these activities. Cultural Mondays ensure that all learners have the opportunity to participate in the cultural activity of preference. Mondays are divided into three cultural slots in order to accommodate all the general societies as well as large performance groups. Should there be any clashes with sport, culture will take preference on a Monday.

Our new extra-mural policy was launched this term. This policy makes provision for grades 8 to 10 learners who are over-committed in cultural activities (9 hours per week or more) to be exempted from sport. Grade 11 and 12 learners are now expected to complete a minimum number of extra-mural hours per week, which can consist of either culture, sport, service or any combination thereof.

JAZZ BAND Our jazz group, The Dynamix Jazz Band, had a very busy and successful term. They participated in the International Jazz Festival’s Sustainable Training and Development Program and the Marist Music Festival on the Lawn at St Joseph‘s Marist College. Khoncko Twalo and Jaden Philander has been selected for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s Youth All Star Band, and they will perform at The Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s free concert on Green Market Square on 27 March 2019. The Dynamix will be performing at The Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s Sustainable Training and Development Gala Concert at The Artscape on 26 March 2019. We are indeed very proud of this group. Congratulations to Mrs Johannes and all the band members

TYGERBERG INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD Learners also had the opportunity to enter for the International Eisteddfod. These learners and groups are hard at work to present their items at this prestigious competition during the second and third term.

PRESS CLUB & PHOTOGRAPHY SOCIETY Our Press Club and Photography Society has proved to be a very committed and enthusiastic group of learners. These learners have been on duty at school events and it is their mission to keep the Settlers family and the general public informed of all events, activities and results. “Like” the school’s Instagram and Facebook pages (The Settlers High School) to stay up to date with the vibrant Settlers life.

MUSICAL & DRAMA PERFORMANCE GROUPS Rehearsals for the Musical and Drama groups are in full swing. The Drama Performance Group members are preparing to compete at the Artscape and ATKV competitions.

The Musical production will run from 20 to 26 July and ticket sales will start at the end of next term. The various performances of this production consisting of our Settlers vocalists, dancers and musicians will be:

 Saturday, 20 July – “Granny” Show (Final dress rehearsal)  Monday, 22 July – Gala Evening @ R130 per ticket, including snacks. Adults and invited guests only.  Tuesday, 23 July – Student Night @ R60 per ticket. This show will only be for current Settlers students.  Thursday, 25 July – Show Night @ R70 per ticket.  Friday, 26 July – Show Night @ R80 per ticket.

INTERACT ♥ The heart of our school – the Interact Society – is running various community drives. They are collecting bottle caps for the Smile Foundation, ecobricks for WasteED and bread tags for wheel chairs. We encourage our learners to support these ventures, as apart from the money raised from recycling these items, we are also cleaning our environment and ensuring these non-biodegradable items do not end up in our landfills.

The money raised from recycling the bottle caps is used for repairing cleft lips and palates of children throughout . The ecobricks we are collecting at the moment, are donated to an organisation who is currently building a school in Lavender Hill with these ecobricks. To date we have donated more than 1000 ecobricks already. And the collection of bread tags is also an ongoing project, which over the years, has resulted in our school donating 5 wheelchairs to people in need. The Settlers High is an official collection point for all three these items and the community is encouraged to drop off their bottle caps, bread tags and ecobricks at the school during school hours.

Interact will be delivering our recycled stationary (flip files, lever arch files, cardboard envelopes, plastic sleeves, paper etc.) as well as unclaimed lost property (lunch boxes, water bottles, towels and clothes) to Primary school this week. PRINCIPALS TEA Mrs Gallie hosted a special tea for all the A candidates from 2018. The Waitrons Unlimited Society managed the setting up and serving at the event.

STAFF ONE ACT PLAY Mrs Johannes and Mr Fredericks adapted a play called ‘A little box of Oblivion’ and asked interested teachers to attend rehearsals - little did we know what we were getting ourselves into - rehearsals, learning of lines and acting… all in a day’s work… but not normally for such a large crowd. Those involved had a great time and many talented actors and actresses were discovered. Thank you to the Directors who adapted the play to incorporate little idiosyncrasies for those in the cast.

BLOOD DONATION CLINIC The blood donor clinic had a very successful clinic where the school showed their love to help others. Every donation can save up to 3 lives. 156 donors signed up, the target was 75 donations and we had 94 donations. Well done to all who donated. The blood peer promoters managed the clinic very well. We welcome our four new blood peer promoters to the group.

REUNION ISLAND VISITORS Our first group from Reunion Island visited us this term and were hosted by Settlers learners. The aim of their visit is to improve their English whilst also touring Cape Town’s famous sights. The group has English tuition in the mornings and are tourists in the afternoons. A group of Settlers learners, who have hosted the group, will be guests in Reunion later on in the year.

BEATRICE MWAMBA Past pupil Craig Kensley heard of the plight of our 2018 Dux student and approached an organisation thar might be able to assist her. To everyone’s delight Beatrice was invited onto a TV programme called ‘Tussen Ons’ in which Community Chest gave her a cheque towards her studies for R50 00 for each year of study. Beatrice presented herself with grace and humility as is characteristic of her. Her mother, Mrs Hall and Ms Magson became instant TV stars when the announcement was made- there were many tears of joy as Beatrice’s dreams of getting sufficient finance to study were realised.

STAFF CONGRATULATIONS Mrs Abrahamse has been selected to manage the u18 SA side and has recently been elected as the Chairperson of WP Girls Hockey Association. Mrs Basheer has been selected as an age group manager for the Western Cape Athletics Championships. We are very proud of the talented staff we have.

FAREWELL We bid a sad farewell to Miss Belelie as she takes up a Subject Advisor post for History in the East District. Miss Belelie started out at The Settlers as an eager and passionate History teacher who lived for her subject and often re-enacted scenes from great historical events in her classroom. As the years passed her passion never decreased despite the fact that she took on various leadership roles and became Grade Head, Subject Head and also accepted a position on the school’s executive where she headed up the Communications Manco. Miss Belelie has also been a valuable member of the Matric Dance organizing committee as well as organising the Grade 11’s at the water point for many years. She also assisted Mr Haupt with interviewing previous Headmasters and writing part of the 40 years celebration History Book of the school. As head of Grade 9 she became a wonderful mommy figure for her charges and would go to battle for them. Her infectious laughter, bubbly nature and zest for life will be sorely missed in the staffroom. We wish Miss Belelie all the very best as she takes up this new challenge knowing that she will be a great asset to the department.

With ex-Headmaster Mr Reeler History Department Farewell

Mrs Gallie, Miss Belelie, Mrs Hall
