To whom it may concern: It is a pleasure and an honor to be able to write to enthusiastically support Professor Ogobara K. Doumbo’s nomination for a 2016 Honorary International Fellowship. I have known Professor Ogobara for nearly 25 years and collaborated closely with him for the past five years. Professor Ogobara’s accomplishments are delineated extremely well in his curriculum vitae and in Dr. Miller’s nominating letter. He is a giant in terms of biomedical research and medical care in Africa. I have known this for many years, but it is only in the last five years that I have had the opportunity of collaborating directly and closely with Ogo and seeing firsthand what he has accomplished. It is stunning. We collaborated on the first clinical trial of our whole sporozoite , PfSPZ Vaccine, in Africa. This study, which will soon be published, has shown the highest level of protective efficacy induced by a vaccine against infection in Africa ever recorded. The study would not have been possible without the outstanding scientific and clinical teams, laboratory and clinical infrastructure, and community engagement and relationship that Ogo has built over the past two decades. During the past four decades I have worked in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and all over Africa. However, I have never seen a leader in our field who has built such an amazing enterprise. He has trained scores of young scientists and clinicians and facilitated their movement into positions of responsibility and leadership. He has had the vision to work to create, maintain and expand cutting edge laboratory facilities and clinical research centers and used them to execute the highest quality laboratory and clinical research. He has always remained mindful of his responsibility to the communities suffering from tropical infectious diseases and to development of strong ties to these communities to foster his work. Furthermore, he has consistently taken on national and regional positions of responsibility. As an example, when we began our work on vaccine development in Equatorial Guinea, a country where clinical trials had never been done, I called on Ogo to be on the executive committee overseeing this work. His contributions have been extraordinary. Professor Ogobara Doumbo is a phenomenal scientist, clinician, teacher, leader and mentor, who has made an enormous contribution to the development of his country and Africa in general, and to biomedical science specifically. I urge you to select him to be one of this year’s Honorary International Fellows. He represents the absolute best of what we strive for in our field.

Sincerely,

Stephen L. Hoffman, MD, DTMH, DSc (hon), FIDSA, FASTMH Chief Executive and Scientific Officer
