Winter 2018 COVERING THE ARTS IN QUINTE Volume 28, Number 3 Big music, small town: Long Range Hustle

By Allen Steinberg

You don’t have to be from the big city to produce that big city sound. Plenty of ’s best known musicians grew up in small communities all across the country. Homegrown music from these small towns scarcely goes unnoticed, and indie-rock band Long Range Hustle is doing everything they can and more to make a name for themselves.

Hailing from the communities of Stirling, Madoc and Tweed respectively, the five piece is creating music that defies the quaintness of their hometowns. By combining energetic rhythms, lush melodies and passionate vocal harmonies, Long Range Hustle seems to find the perfect balance of sounds to formulate well-received alternative music.

The group, who all attended high school at Centre Hastings, has been a work in progress for years with vocalists Paul Brogee and Jay Foster being staples in the lineup for years. In 2015, Long Range Hustle released their debut full length album From Seedlings to Saplings, which earned them considerable local praise. Therefore, if you were going to jump on the Long Range Hustle bandwagon at any time, without a doubt, it should be now.

This past summer, the band released Morning Clover, the first single off of their upcoming 2019 album. The Long Range Hustle rocks Signal Brewery track received immediate success amongst their southern following. In a matter of a few months, the song is more intimate and honest than Morning Clover, as the Long Range Hustle is currently on tour supporting had over 10,000 listens on Spotify and it quickly became softer percussion allows the self-deprecating lyrics to hit Morning Clover, already making stops at The Mansion closer to home. Both works bring honesty, boldness and in Kingston, The Tweedsmuir in Tweed, and Signal excitement, themes that help solidify Long Range Hustle Brewery in Corbyville before hitting various cities in as a genuine upcoming talent from the Quinte region. southern Ontario and the Maritimes. Umbrella • Winter 2018 3 VISUAL ARTS Small is beautiful: art collecting on a budget of paintings that can be grouped into an attractive arrangement and become a hallway gallery or focal point of a room.

The idea of offering ‘small works’ began at Christmastime about 15 years ago to raise money for the Christmas Sharing program. More recently, the BAA began including small paintings in each new monthly show. It’s been quite popular with both artists and gallery patrons.

What better way to acquire examples of the work of many artists? The artists, too, enjoy the challenges of a small format and the opportunity to test their ideas before tackling a large canvas. And, by buying a painting, you are paying that artist the ultimate compliment.

The BAA Gallery at 392 Front Street has a new show each month, except during the summer when the annual One by One show hangs for two months. One of the many benefits of joining the BAA is the opportunity to show one’s work every month. Other advantages include opportunities to develop your painting skills through workshops and weekly studio groups, plus the undeniable pleasure of making new friends with similar interests.

Everyone is encouraged to visit the BAA Gallery and enjoy the art, both large and small. There is also a selection of cards, jewellery and more. The gallery is staffed by BAA members Linda DeHaan (left) and Carolanne Hunt hold examples of small works on display at the BAA Gallery. volunteers and is normally open between 10 am and 4 pm, Tuesday to Saturday. This exhibition of paintings covers a 9 year period in the artist’s life chronicling one tangent of her artwork. The paintings are works of faith whose results rely heavily on the laws of nature. Umbrella • Winter 2018 9 Painter Marc Poulin explores a new abstract style

By Kathryn MacDonald

“I’m experimenting. My goal is to have a defining style and I’m slowly getting there,” Marc Poulin says while setting out a dozen paintings for viewing. Over the past year and a half, Poulin’s paintings have undergone major change. The early watercolours are representational, fluid, and gentle, as in Bubblegum, a portrait of his young daughter which appeared in a 2017 show at the Quinte Arts Council.

Art is a passion and he paints. “Nothing too heavy or too soft,” he says, “a release of tension and stress,” Poulin says. “When identifying Glass Animals, Meg Myers, and Bishop painting, my mind can wander, no need to focus, I can Briggs as favourites. The music can influence the just see what happens.” rhythm in the art’s movement.

A turning point came when he struggled to paint an outstretched hand in watercolours. “I couldn’t achieve the luminosity I wanted with watercolours. I experimented with acrylics. I was hooked.” At the same time, Poulin fell under the influence of Jackson Pollock’s work and he began experimenting with abstract painting.

“Abstract is freer than representational painting,” Poulin says. At the same time, he assures me that abstract might look easy, but you have balance and composition to consider.

“I’m happy when the colours work and when the eye doesn’t focus on one thing but travels.” As in Jackson Pollock’s art, Marc Poulin seeks movement, but he is not pouring paint as Pollock did. He uses a palette knife and a catalyst wedge (a rubber wedge with a sharp edge to spread the paint around) and acrylic paint brushes. Some of the mixed media work includes metallic paint and pastels along with acrylic. Umbrella • Winter 2018 13 Panto at the Stirling Festival Theatre By Ken MacDougall, Artistic Director As we move into the winter months, the Stirling Festival Theatre continues throughout its busiest time of year. The annual Musical Comedy Panto has entertained audiences, filling the Stirling Theatre for well over two decades and has become a tradition for many elementary school classes, families, groups and businesses.

This year’s offering is The Princess and the Pea. It can be best described as a reverse Grease. A spoiled Prince needs to find a princess to marry. In comes Princess Irene but the problem is, no one believes she is a Princess. Irene is more interested in revving motors than royalty in that she is a grease monkey. The Prince, Peter and his mother Queen Penelope Peabody seek to prove that Irene really is a Princess. This leads, of course, to the giant bed for which the story is famous.

There are lots of old friends, familiar to many SFT audience members, who have returned to the cast this year. JP Baldwin, a Panto favourite, performs as Jeeves the Butler and is also the choreographer. Registering Flowertopia Studio as a book publishing business, and subsequently publishing Dallas Bader’s The Poetry of Pot, was my third large-scale project. I don’t anticipate that I’ll be giving any of the big Toronto publishing houses a run for their money, but preparing Honey Novick’s next book for publication is something I’m currently working on and the plan is to have it ready by mid-November. I’ll add that publishing-related inquiries can be sent to [email protected].

To help celebrate the historic end of cannabis prohibition in Canada, here’s a selection from The Poetry of Pot, which is a collection of Dallas Bader’s reminiscences about life in the woods of Hastings Highlands back in the hippie era of the 1970s:

Winter Music by Dallas Bader

I walked a mile on snowshoes to a hilltop, Climbed a spruce tree And saw my cabin in the distance like a toy. After smoking a joint, I heard faint musical sounds in the north, Like distant trumpets playing a beautiful symphony. It was the sound of the wind playing through the trees!

Lyrical musings on volunteering By Toby Tylor Not always easily done. But what makes a person decide to volunteer? To lift the curtain on the dramas behind the scenes and take a role in life as we find it? For some, simply understanding that everybody needs a helping hand and that the frontiers of civilization are not beyond our experience or are in the future. The frontiers of self-knowing remain with us in our daily lives. We are the undiscovered feelings and ideas embodied in the lives we live. The will to know is the seed of volunteering which has yet to disclose its beauty and challenges.

I would like to thank the Quinte Arts Council for being welcoming and encouraging for providing me an opportunity to be a part of the community. And also, to the people of

Belleville, for their kindness and openness, I am grateful. / hotLEGdesigns.com PHOTO: David L. Vaughan
