  • AFFTA Policy Statement on Federal Fisheries Policy and Management
AFFTA Policy Statement on Federal Fisheries Policy and Management The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) is the nation’s largest fly fishing trade association and is dedicated to the sustained growth of the fly fishing industry. AFFTA’s more than 900 members, including fly fishing retail stores, manufacturers, outfitters, guides, and lodges, are a part of the nearly $900 million contributed annually to the U.S. economy by the fly fishing industry. Ours is a growing market. Between 2015 and 2016, net sales revenue of fly fishing products increased by 8.5%. In 2016, more than 4.5 million Americans went fly fishing at least once, and the number of anglers who fly fish is estimated at ten million.1 AFFTA recognizes that abundant fish populations supported by healthy marine, coastal, and freshwater habitats are the foundation for a thriving recreational fly fishing industry. AFFTA pursues and supports policies that conserve and protect fisheries, fish habitat, and wild spaces. This ensures high-quality and plentiful recreational opportunities that create economic activity for our members and safeguards the industry’s future. Saltwater fly fishing is the fastest growing segment of our industry. To encourage continued growth and investment in saltwater fly fishing by our members, AFFTA supports state and federal ocean fisheries management that conserves and restores intact and thriving coastal and marine ecosystems, achieves responsible access to our marine fisheries, and is based upon the best available science. Overview and Status of Federal Fisheries Policy and Management U.S. ocean fisheries are managed under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA).

  • A Comparison of Distance Fly Casting Performance Between Three 5- Weight Long-Belly Floating Lines
Send Orders of Reprints at [email protected] 118 The Open Sports Science Journal, 2012, 5, 118-122 Open Access A Comparison of Distance Fly Casting Performance Between Three 5- Weight Long-belly Floating Lines Ulrik Röijezon1,* and Stefan Siikavaara2 1Department of Health Sciences, Luleå University of Technology, 97187 Luleå, Sweden 2Dala Sports Academy, University of Dalarna, 791 88 Falun, Sweden Abstract: Long-belly fly lines have gained extensive popularity around the world, both for fishing and for competitive distance casting. In Sweden, three long-belly fly lines are used as official lines in Fly Casting competitions: The Mastery Expert Distance (Scientific Anglers, USA), the Rio Gold Tournament (Rio, USA) and the Barrio GT140 (Barrio Fly Lines, Scotland). The objective of this study was to compare distance casting performance between the three long-belly fly lines using a standardized test protocol. Sixteen elite casters, eight competitors in Fly Casting and eight competitors in Casting, each performed eight casts with all three lines. All lines were cast in a randomized manner with the same type of rod (MSX Sapphire 790-4) fitted with the same type of reel and identical leaders. The test was performed as an indoor competition using the overhead cast technique. The statistical analyses revealed no significant differences between the lines. This result was consistent both for the whole group (p>0.05) and when the results from the subgroups of competitors in Fly Casting and Casting were analyzed separately (p>0.05). The conclusion of the study is that at group level there are no significant differences in distance casting performance between the three lines when casting is performed indoors.

  • September 2017 President's Message
September 2017 President’s Message Hello everyone. Here we are starting another wonderful year at Lee Wulff. Today I'm actually sitting in Ludington Michigan watching the famous S.S.Badger ferry leave the dock. It is the only one left of its kind. It is still steam powered and it's a casual four hour ride across Lake Michigan. Yesterday I was returning from Green Bay, having attended a certified casting instructor preparation course taught by the FFI. I decided to seize the moment and took the ferry from Manitowoc Wisconsin across to Ludington MI. It was absolutely the most delightful four hours I have spent in a very long time. There's something to be said for the old fashioned way of doing things, taking our time and enjoying the ride. This is my last president's message to you all. Next month we will be having our business meeting and elections. I want to present to you the new slate of officers. I have the greatest confidence in their leadership and look forward to working with them. Please come in October and show them your support by voting. President: Bob Becker Vice President: Jerry Sapp Treasurer: Yves Charron Secretary: Beverly DeJovine So this chapter president is going to stop and smell the roses for a while. I can't say enough about what the four last year's have meant to me and I owe it all to you, our chapter members. You all are a great inspiration to me and it has been my pleasure to get to know so many of you.

  • Basic Knots for Fly Tackle
BASIC KNOTS FOR FLY TACKLE The Balanced System 3M/Scientific Anglers pioneered a concept that underlies all other decisions in fly tackle selection: The Balanced System. By this, we mean your tackle-rod, reel, line, leader and tippet should be balanced for better performance. You can easily select balanced components for your system because the fly tackle industry follows a common standard when labeling products. For example, most rod manufacturers label the proper line weight right on their rods, so that any 6-weight rod will balance with a 6-weight line. This is also true for most reels. No matter what quality rod, reel or line you buy, they won’t perform properly if they aren’t balanced. So check these components of your fly fishing system and make sure they are balanced before you assemble the rest of your system. Before you start putting line on your reel, find out how much backing you’ll need by reading your reel instructions. Then collect the components and spread them out on a flat surface with good lighting. A pair of nail clippers is the only tool you’ll need to assemble them. Even if you’ve done this before, you might want to spend a little extra time practicing the knots we recommend before you actually put the line on the reel. A leader, a piece of rope, or best of all, some old fly line make it easy to practice tying the knots you’ll need to securely join the components of your system. One other thing, most new reels are set up for left-handed retrieve, so if you reel from the right, you’ll have to change the set up.

  • Surviving Fisheries Management: Angling, Aquaculture, and Lake Ahmic
SURVIVING FISHERIES MANAGEMENT: ANGLING, AQUACULTURE, AND LAKE AHMIC Michael David Del Vecchio SUBMITTED INPARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF ART IN HISTORY NIPISSING UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES NORTH BAY, ONTARIO © Michael David Del Vecchio September 2010 i Abstract The vast majority of inland waters in Ontario have been designated as purely recreational fisheries. Environmental historians who study human-fish relations have demonstrated the influence of anglers in the establishment of fishing regulations and fisheries management policies that sought to maximize fish resources for sport fishing and fishing tourism. To achieve this goal, aquaculture programs were conducted throughout Ontario that artificially reared fish and planted them in lakes. For over a century, from approximately 1860-1960, the Ontario government relied on aquaculture as a blanket solution to all fishery problems. Over the past fifty years, fisheries science has questioned the ecological benefits of stocking programs. Stocking efforts in the province have been drastically reduced since the 1960s but have continued largely because of grass root initiatives from concerned anglers. Lake Ahmic is home to a small cottage community based out of the village of Magnetawan. The lake has been stocked with a variety of fish species for over a hundred years. In addition to this, several species have been accidentally introduced to Lake Ahmic altering its ecological balance. Between 1987 and 2006, a local angling organization was responsible for initiating and running a walleye-stocking program on Lake Ahmic. In 2006, to the disappointment of the local anglers and greater Magnetawan community, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources canceled the stocking program.
