Douglas Hodge Actor Douglas Hodge is a five times Olivier nominated actor-director, who has worked at the National Theatre, the RSC, Shakespeare's Globe and the Royal Court Theatre. As a writer and director he has directed TORCH SONG TRILOGY at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2012. He was Associate Director at the Donmar theatre and his directing work includes DIMETOS, ABSURDIA, LAST EASTER at Birmingham Rep and SEE HOW THEY RUN which went straight to the West End after a sell-out tour. Douglas has also directed two short films and a multi camera piece for BBC2. He also co-wrote FOREST PEOPLE, a half hour screenplay for BBC2. For ten years he worked almost exclusively with Harold Pinter as both actor and director. In 2015 he directed a version of Pinter's OLD TIMES starring Clive, Owen, Eve Best and Kelly Reilly for a production from Roundabout Theatre on Broadway. As a composer Douglas won the Stiles and Drew award in 2012 for Best New Song for POWERCUT.     Ben Ferber The Hothouse and Dynamic Equilibrium in the Works of Harold Pinter I have no doubt that history will recognize Harold Pinter as one of the most influential dramatists of all time, a perennial inspiration for the way we look at modern theater. If other playwrights use characters and plots to put life under a microscope for audiences, Pinter hands them a kaleidoscope and says, “Have at it.” He crafts multifaceted plays that speak to the depth of his reality and teases and threatens his audience with dangerous truths. In No Man’s Land, Pinter has Hirst attack Spooner, who may or may not be his old friend: “This is outrageous! Who are you? What are you doing in my house?”1 Hirst then launches into a monologue beginning: “I might even show you my photograph album. You might even see a face in it which might remind you of your own, of what you once were.”2 Pinter never fully resolves Spooner’s identity, but the mens’ actions towards each other are perfectly clear: with exacting language and wit, Pinter has constructed a magnificent struggle between the two for power and identity. In 1958, early in his career, Pinter wrote The Hothouse, an incredibly funny play based on a traumatic personal experience as a lab rat at London’s Maudsley Hospital, proudly founded as a modern psychiatric institution, rather than an asylum. The story of The Hothouse, set in a mental hospital of some sort, is centered around the death of one patient, “6457,” and the unexplained pregnancy of another, “6459.” Details around both incidents are very murky, but varying amounts of culpability for both seem to fall on the institution’s leader, Roote, and his second-in- command, Gibbs.

Photo: Joan Marcus Theater Review Stripped down to its bare musical essentials, excellent revival of La Cage Aux Folles remains relevant & entertaining La Cage Aux Folles Book by Harvey Fierstein Music and lyrics by Jerry Herman Directed by Terry Johnson Longacre Theatre 220 West 48th Street (212-239-6200), www.LaCage.com By David NouNou This scaled-down version of La Cage Aux Folles is a rarity indeed: a musical revival that not only works, but is still relevant in modern-day America .The original version that opened in 1983 was a grand-scale musical, with all the trimmings of a wonderful Jerry Herman opus, replete with a huge cast, elaborate sets, and magnificent costumes. A dazzler for the eyes and ears, it needed all the appeal and acceptability for a conservative Reagan-era nation. The 2004 version was mounted on a grand scale, but lacked the heart that this musical so desperately needs. This version captures the heart and soul of the musical without too much razzle-dazzle and glamour. It has just enough to capture the essence of the illusion. The book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the Jean Poiret play (made into a brilliant French movie in 1979), has the sensibilities of an American musical. Although it's still set on the French Riviera, it is the first musical that dealt with gay issues and what constitutes a family. Looking at it now, it really was a groundbreaking show.
