Amen. Serra Prayer for Vocations OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA From the Desk of the Parochial Vicar Father Mark Hoffman Dear Friends,

Most all of us know the exact date of our birth, and the city where it took place. But do you know the exact date and location of your spiritual birth date? Mine was Sunday, July 26, 1959. The date of my baptism. The location was Saint Paul Parish in Erie. And the name of the baptizing priest was it’s legendary pastor, Monsignor Louis J. Marino. Attending the quiet ceremony were me, my parents, my godparents and likely my grandparents. To my knowledge, there are no photographs of the event. It was not normally done in those days. The only real record of the event is in a dusty old book located in a locked safe in the parish office of Saint Paul’s Parish Office, the “Baptismorum Registrum” (Baptismal Register). I even got to see the entry once. I was surprised to see that the entire entry was in Latin. The register has me listed as “Marcus Antonius” (Mark Anthony). It was interesting to see. While my baptism date means nothing to most people, it means a great deal to me, because it was on that date, my soul was claimed for Christ. I was forever changed, whether I knew it or not. With the renewal of the sacraments at the call of the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960’s, we have tried to re- capture a sense of importance of the entire order of Baptism. We now ask the parents to attend a brief but important instructional class so that they will know their parental responsibilities in raising a baby in the Catholic faith. We also encourage the official witnesses, or “godparents” in understanding their own roles. A godparent is not an honorary title to be given to a parent’s best friend. A godparent needs to model for the child what it is to be a Christian. That includes faithful to worship, lifestyle, ethics, prayer and virtue. We also have a renewed understanding of the opportunities every baptized man and woman should embrace, especially that of devotion, piety, and service within the church and society. Friends, baptism is not just a cultural thing to do, and when it only becomes a reason for a family party, we do damage to the sacrament. Baptism is an invitation to enter into a larger family of faith, with honors and responsibility on everyone’s part. The documents of Vatican II reminds us of the definition of the Church. “The Church is the people of God gathered in a hierarchical assembly.” In other words – while we all have different roles and levels of authority, we the baptized all share in the responsibility of reaching out to others in truth, hospitality and kindness to proclaim the love the Father gave us in His son Jesus Christ. We become a member of a church and defy the evil one. Sin is forever washed away. “Baptism” is not magic ---- it does not prohibit us from getting bored at Mass, nor does it provide some infused knowledge of every doctrine or teaching of faith. Baptism does not erase the urge to sin. What it does is open the door to our hearts to want to be curious as we grow to ask the question: “So, how can I be a part of this thing called, The Church? What can I do to help? What is my vocation in my life?” Baptism provides sanctifying and actual grace. We are bathed in profound love that can only be denied when we turn our backs on God. God never turns from us. On this feast of remembering the Lord’s own baptism in the Jordan River, take a moment to research your own baptismal date, and ask the questions before people pass away. “Mom, what was my baptism day like, and who baptized me?” “Dad, what feelings did you have as I was baptized into the Church?” “Grandma, is it true I wore the same baptismal gown that you did?” And as you do, remember that now you too, are part of the work and mission of the , Christ’s holy family. You were claimed to be profoundly different. You became a Christian. O.L.P. FACTOID: Who was the first person baptized in the history of Our Lady of Peace Parish? ANSWER: John Mark McElhenney. John was baptized on November 13, 1955 by our founding pastor, Father James F. Daily. John is the son of Stewart McElhenny and Marcela (Riske) McElhenny.
