Doordarshan Kendra, came into existence on October 2, 1972 with a limited reach and programming hours. On 9th August 1986 the Marathi Regional Programme Channel started telecast in Terrestrial mode. It was launched in its present avatar as DD Sahyadri on 15th August, 1994. It became a round the clock service in the year 2000 augmented by satellite transmission. The Regional Service is uplinked from DDK Mumbai through INSAT‐3A Satellite (in C‐Band) for relay by HPTs & LPTs throughout the state. It is also available in DD‐Direct Plus, Doordarshan’s free‐to‐air DTH Service.

The Kendra has two tier service ‐ DD‐1 terrestrial from 0600 TO 0900 hrs & 1500 hrs to 2000 hrs and DD‐Sahyadri Satellite channel round the clock. Supported by Doordarshan Studios in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, DD Sahyadri is a household name in , largely because of its programmes with high production values. Despite stiff competition from private satellite channels, DD Sahyadri holds its own with popular serials, informative programmes, public debates and film based programmes. DD Sahyadri also felicitates eminent citizens and personalities of Maharashtra for their contribution in different fields, by honouring them with Sahyadri Awards ‐‐ Navratna, Navjyoti, Krishiratna, Hirkani, Marathi Cine Awards. Manik Award is presented to staff members for excellence in performance. Events like Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadasi, Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sammelan, Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan, Mumbai Marathon are Telecast Live. Programmes ‐ Rangoli, Bioscope, DD Top Ten, Cine Satrangi, Kuch Dil Ne Kaha, Chulbuli Filmein Chatpati Gupshup, Money Plant, New Year Eve Programme are produced for National Network. News bulletins are telecast at 0830 hrs, 1430 hrs, 1700 hrs, 1900 hrs and 2130 hrs. The Channel devotes more than 46 % of its time to informative, educative and Public Service Programmes.
