The Screaming Eagles suffered through a severe offensive drought last season, resulting in a 3-12-2 overall mark. USI missed several chances at victories or ties in five 1-0 losses. To try and jump start the USI offense, USI Head Coach Dan Hogan begins his eighth season with 13 returning players, three players that redshirted last season, and seven newcomers. FORWARDS: A boost in the offensive production could be on the way for the Eagles in the form of a new player. New to the squad is freshman Dan Dormeier. Dormeier helped Castle High School (Newburgh, Indi- ana) to three sectional crowns and regional titles during his prep career. The Eagles have some offensive numbers returning in senior Carl Carr, junior Mike Bendzen, and sophomore Paul Hutchens. Hutchens leads the returning forwards with four points on a goal and two assists. Carr followed Hutchens in the scoring column with three points on one goal and one assist, while Bendzen recorded two points on one goal. MIDFIELDERS: The USI midfield will have a combination of six returning players, one redshirted player, and two new- comers. Senior Evan Stoll is USI’s top returning scorer. Stoll, one of two returning players who played in every game last year, was third on the team in scoring with five points on two goals and one assists. Coming back for 2007 with Stoll in the midfield are seniors Jason Blose and Quintin Myers; junior Tyree Robinson; and sophomores William Reid and Kyle Leffel. Blose had one goal in 15 matches, while Myers had one assist in eight games. New to the USI midfield are junior Michael Simcock and freshman Justin Fox. Simcock was the Player of the Year for Ashton on Mersey (Sale, Cheshire, England) in 2003 and 2004, while Fox is ISCA second team All-District and All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference performer from Avon High School (Avon, Indiana). Fox, who also was named to the Indianapolis Star first team All-West, tied for fourth on the AHS all- time list with 24 assists. 2 2007 Season Outlook DEFENSE: For the fourth straight year, senior Matt Vossmer will be the foundation upon which the USI defense will be built. Vossmer has played in all 52 matches since joining the program in 2004, missing just two starts. He also scored his first collegiate goal last year. Vossmer is joined in his final year as an Eagle by junior Dan Grunewald. Grunewald has been very steady at outside back for USI, playing in 31 of 34 matches during his first two years. Along with Vossmer and Grunewald, the Eagles return senior Corey Hendon, who came off the bench in four matches last year, and freshman Nathan Bower, who redshirted last year. New to the USI defensive third are freshmen Nate Sloan, Caleb Schmitt, and Derek Craig. Between the posts, the Eagles will count heavily on redshirt-junior Andrew Hults. Hults did not play last season after being the number one ranked goalkeeper nationally by the NJCAA in 2004 and 2005. He had a 0.50 GAA in 2004 and a 0.77 GAA in 2005. USI also returns sophomore Brad Cadden, who saw action in four matches as a freshman. He had a 1.67 GAA and nine saves in 107 minutes of action. New between the posts in 2007 is junior Andrew Haley. Haley transferred to USI from Forest Park Community College where he had a 3.00 GAA in 18 games last fall. 3 USI Coaching Staff Dan Hogan, Head Men's Soccer Coach Head Coach Dan Hogan begins his eighth season at the helm of the USI men's soccer team and his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. Hogan's tenure has seen him direct USI into three GLVC Tournaments, including back-to-back ap- pearances in 2002 and 2003. In 2003, Hogan's Eagles were 10-7-1 overall, finished second in the GLVC with an 8-2 league record, and were ranked in the top five of the NCAA II Central Re- gion. USI's second place regular season finish was the team's best since 1991. The Eagles began their two-year run under Hogan in 2002, producing a 13-8-0 overall record and a 7-3-0 mark in the GLVC. The squad also featured the GLVC Player and Freshman of the Year, a first-team NSCAA/adidas Scholastic All-American, a second-team Verizon Academic All-American, a second-team All-American, and four All-GLVC performers.
