The program will be centered at the plush Harms Gallery of The Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. Dockage for our boats and outside activities will be at the beautiful Spring Cove Marina, and Solomons Harbor Marina. Both are very close to the Museum. Page 6 The Log, Vol. XXXVIII, Issue 2 Newsletter of HSA-1 Digging into the Bag of Tricks When the Chart Plotter Fails One of the speakers at the Rendezvous will be George Day of Blue Water Sailing Magazine. A seasoned blue water sailor and circumnavigator, George is going to speak on the Exumas, one of your editor’s favorite Bahamian cruising grounds. A recent Blue Water Sailing article reminded me of the last time we set out to take WindRose to the Exumas. A common jumping off point for the Exumas is Royal Island. On New Year’s Eve we completed the all-day sail from Lynyard Cay to Royal and all of our electronic instrumentation was working just fine. The next morning, the electronic chart plotter wasn’t displaying a chart! No it wasn’t an issue of a cocktail hangover. A storm rolled through and fried the SD slot in the chart plotter. That takes us back to the Blue Water Sailing article “Digging into the Bag of Tricks”. Check it out. It talks about keeping your favorite non-electronic tools aboard. We were glad we did. We did have GPS, so could pinpoint where we were on our paper charts. It was fun doing it the old way. No Instruments at All? Well our little exploit sans chart plotter was no big deal. Perrian and Ed Upton’s friend Marvin Creamer sailed around the world with no instruments! He did it without the use of compass, sextant or electronic instruments.
