Impact Report 2017-2018 With your help, we provide pivotal experiences that improve campers’ lives.

Powering transformative camp experiences for children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Camp Twin Lakes is able to provide the opportunity to be part of transformative summer camp adventures for kids who are not able to attend typical camp. We foster an environment of creative freedom, fun, and discovery that teaches our campers to overcome misconceptions about what they think they can accomplish. They return home with a new sense of confidence and independence. Words from Camp Leaders

One of my favorite memories from camp this summer is of a rousing game of Thunderball - a fast-paced game of aiming and dodging a ball in a tight wooden court. It was the playful taunts, cheerful encouragements, and grunts of determination that lured me to the game. I observed happiness, humanity and the simplicity of childhood; not the physical limitations which are too often in focus in a camper’s daily life the remaining weeks of the year. At Camp Twin Lakes, children are able to simply be: to be daring, to be shy, to be silly, to be confident, to be themselves. It’s an experience where character is at the forefront as opposed to differences. It’s one magical week and it’s also a critical component of personal development and independence. To accept one’s true self and others is a vital part of growing up, and I am proud to say you continue to make this possible. On behalf of the Camp Twin Lakes Board of Directors, thank you for providing these pivotal Adrian Powell, experiences for our campers. Camp Twin Lakes Board President

Summer camp is a rite of passage. Nights away from home build confidence and independence, lifelong friendships are developed among cabin mates, and there are countless opportunities to try new things and learn new skills in a safe, supportive environment. This year, we wrapped up our 26th summer of providing transformative camp experiences for children and adults facing serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges. Your generosity and support make a big impact on the people we serve, both during their camp experience and in their day-to-day lives when they return home. Looking ahead, we will be more intentional than ever in measuring the impact of Camp on our campers, their families and our volunteers so that we can continue to implement programs that ensure progressive change. We are excited to grow and create the capacity for more children to experience Camp while enhancing Jill Morrisey, our leadership development program to deepen impacts on youth as they Camp Twin Lakes CEO prepare for adulthood. Thank you for your commitment to our campers’ journeys! 2018 Board of Directors

“That’s what is This summer at camp, 8-year-old Ethan joined the ranks so great about Camp: of the “Mighty Stickers,” a group of campers capable he’s there with everyone who of treating themselves and who demonstrate full is in a situation like his. They all understanding of their diagnosis and healthcare plan. cheer each other on and support each other, which I think is truly For five years, Ethan’s parents gave him weekly infusions the main focus of Camp. increased Over 96% of campers reported a higher sense of independence independence and responsibility after attending Camp & sense of responsibility

Ethan and his fellow Mighty Stickers perform their treatment at the medical lodge under the supervision of medical staff trained to meet the unique needs of children diagnosed with hemophilia. Then, they get back to typical camp activities! (below) Younger campers often describe themselves as having two different personas: their “camp self” and their “home self.” At home, they say they are shy and without friends. At Camp, the kids describe themselves as confident, eager to help others, and having lots of friends. They are the stars of the talent show and aspiring heroes.

Jonathon Walker Camp krazy legs: for kids with Spina Bifida

“I don’t have friends at home, I have Spina Bifida.” But at Camp, he is the self-appointed bouncer at the dance (complete with a walkie-talkie and black suit), has an entire cabin full of best friends, and is a member of the camp fraternity.

On the other hand... as campers grow older and more confident, they become able to be their “camp self” at home, too. These young adults then return year after year to help the younger campers return home with confidence.

Tyler Kelly Former camp braveheart camper » camp counselor » college student

“You are at Camp! Because you have been through everything, you can do anything!” - Tyler encouraging his campers

Before coming to Camp, Tyler described himself as shy and lacking confidence. He feared others seeing his scars, preventing him from participating in many typical activities. After finding his voice and his true personality at Camp, he was able to return home and be the same confident, outgoing kid he was improved at Camp. social skills 88% of campers reported that their friendship skills improved because of Camp growing extraordinary leaders Camp Twin Lakes Youth Development Initiatives Our Leaders in Training program teaches teen campers how to be positive role models by providing practical experience leading younger campers through their journeys. Max Einig camper » Leader in training » camp counselor & Mentor

“Camp Twin Lakes really helps kids realize that they’re not alone in this world. A little help and support from others who experience the same things they experience can do wonders for their self-esteem, self-worth, and outlook on life.”

As a 19-year-old living with Tourette syndrome, Max hopes to be the person that he needed when he was younger and to make a difference for kids who are also living with Tourette’s. This summer, Max gave kids just like him an experience they’ll always cherish in an environment where they are free to be themselves. Mikaela “KB” Beck Camper » Leader in training » camp counselor & aspiring pediatric nurse

“Camp can change lives in the most positive of ways. My 12 years at Camp allowed me to get a different perspective and grow into the vibrant, spontaneous, compassionate person I am today. The opportunity to return as a counselor allows me to reinvest the power of my experiences as a former camper to new campers.”

For KB, Camp Twin Lakes is how she found confidence and irreplaceable friendships in a fun and safe environment that felt like home. Often, new-found confidence and friendships are accomplished through the opportunity to help others.

At Camp, kids are given the opportunity to help and support their peers– not just accept help from others. Many campers are used to being the only one with special needs and having adults to help care for those needs. At Camp, each child recognizes their fellow campers have similar needs, and they all work together to fulfill them. The fellowship program

Our Fellowship Program engages recent college graduates and program staff members pursuing careers in camping, education, recreation therapy, and other service-oriented professions. CTL Fellows live and work at Camp and receive free housing, meals, and a small stipend as they embark on a year-long professional development journey to learn about camp management, nonprofit management, program management, and staff supervision in a supportive and intentional environment. Our Fellowship program intentionally builds personal and occupational skills for these aspiring professionals. We want our Fellows to be involved community members, agents for positive change, and advocates for those who can’t advocate for themselves. Fellows are the frontline staff, and the energy and work ethic they carry reverberates throughout the staff.

Since our Fellowship program began, 34 Fellows have completed the program and we have hired seven Fellows to be on our full-time staff. Our partner organizations have also hired several, allowing us to continue working with them. Our other alumni Fellows are now in fields such as elementary and secondary education, mental health counseling, child life in various children’s hospitals, overseas missions, nursing, medicine, law, business, and, of course, camp. Nathaniel Patton Former SUmmer staff >> Fellow pursuing masters degree in child life

"Camp has given me experience with all types of children and families, as well as illnesses and diagnoses. It's incredible to see the little ones who go to away camp for the first time. At Camp, they get to see older kids, who are dealing with the same challenges, take care of themselves. The little ones learn quickly from the older campers and become independent."

As a Child Life Specialist, Nathaniel hopes to use the skills learned at Camp to help pediatric patients cope with their diagnosis and being in the hospital. Nathaniel will provide kids with age-appropriate tools necessary to succeed with a chronic illness or life challenge. New Creative Connections Center

intentional programming

Funded by more than 200 donors who attended last year’s 25th Anniversary Gala, the lakefront Creative Connections Center will serve more than 4,000 campers annually as an arts and crafts center, a ceramics and woodworking studio, and an outdoor teaching kitchen. meet bijou: our camp therapy dog

This summer, Camp Twin Lakes welcomed our very first Community Therapy Dog, Bijou! Thanks to Chip’s Nation and Canine Assistants, Bijou spent all summer at camp visiting each location so that every camper could get to know her. Interaction with therapy dogs can: • reduce anxiety and depression • lower blood pressure • assist with pain management • promote greater self-confidence • encourage communication • increase socialization

Bijou’s main jobs are to provide comfort, affection, and be a friend to all campers, inspire them to try new activities, comfort campers who may be homesick, and stay by campers' sides to help them cope while they receive medical treatments. $1,224,219 raised by events ->> 2,225 campers changed forever Our transformative camp programs are made possible by the generous support of our treasured community. A Parent's Perspective Nancy Perez >> Mother of Camp You B You camper

“Camp friendships are different because you build a community instantly. It takes the worry of whether our kids are okay off the table so that as parents, we can be free to learn from each other, relax, breathe for a second, and take in the resources. Because of Camp, we feel less isolated and less embarrassed. This is where you don’t have to say ‘I’m sorry.’ Camp has taken the taboo off of autism for our family.”

What the Experts Are Saying Ansley Daniel >> Camp Nurse >> pediatric transplant nurse at CHildren's healthcare of atlanta

“I never thought camp would be possible for kids with transplants. These kids are sicker than sick. They’re waiting for organs, some don’t even have the energy to walk down the hall, and are often stuck in bed or in a wheelchair. When they get to camp, they come out of their shell and get to do the same activities as any other child. Some campers have had transplants and some are on dialysis, so their treatment takes place at Camp. We're blessed to have an army of Camp doctors and nurses who are capable of taking care of these kids.
