CLWYD- FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES WI House, 67 Vale Street, Denbigh, LL16 3AP OCTOBER 2015 NEWSLETTER

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members September was a very busy mon th as WIs across the Federation celebrated WI Day on 16 th September. I spent a pleasant afternoon in Eglwysbach planting a tree with the High Sheriff of , a new experience for both of us, followed by Afternoon Tea. Later, I joined members of the Broughton & District Group for a delicious hotpot supper. Members of the Board attended other events organised by WIs. I was unable to accept all the invitations I received, but I did think of everyone during the various celebrations. Congratulations to all the WIs who organised WI Day or Centenary celebrations, whether in September or at other times during this special year. The 200 pe ople, including members from neighbouring Federations, who filled the Town Hall, on 3 rd September, were treated to an excellent evening by the Mikron Theatre Group who performed “Raising Agents”. There was lots of laughter as the story unfurled of a WI trying to recruit new members. The play also included the origins of the WI in Canada plus the influence that the resolutions and campaigns have had. All this from a cast of just four actors, who had undertaken a great deal of research to get eve rything correct. Thank you to Valley Girls WI for organising the event and for the refreshments pr ovided in partnership with Llangollen WI. This was the only performance in , so we were extremely fortunate. Everyone who travelled to Cardiff by train, car or coach thoroughly enjoyed the Federation of Wales Centenary Gala Concert and Conference. The singing and playing were exceptional and the speakers spoke both of the past and the future, The Next Steps. We were joined by Janice Langley, NFWI Chair, Julia Roberts, NFWI Hon Treasurer, Marylyn Haines Evans, NFWI Vice Chair, Jana Osbourne, NFWI General Secretary, along with past Federation of Wales Committee chairs. Trefnant WI will be marking their very own centenary as the WI was formed in Trefnant on 14 th October 1915. The first in our Federation and the second after Llanfair PG. Congratulations on this great achievement. There has been interest from ladies wishing to form new WIs in several areas of the Federation, so watch this space. It’s good to know that the WI is still as relevant today as it has been during the last 100 years. Enid Brown and I will be travelling to Bedfordshire in early October for a three day meeting, which is attended by the chairmen and treasurers from all 69 Federations who meet to discuss all matters pertinent to WI, with members of the NFWI Board of Trustees. I will also be representing Clwyd Denbigh at the Federation of Wales Committee meeting later this month. This is my penultimate message to you, as my term of office is drawing to a close. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Annual Council Meeting in Llangollen on 21 st October, which will be my last meeting as Federation Chairman. Best wishes, Caroline AUTUMN COUNCIL MEETING Wednesday 21 October 2015 at 10.45 am - Llangollen Pavilion
