Commencement season has always stood out as the "supreme festival" A rich on Rochester's academic calendar, Arthur May notes in his history of the University: From earliest years, "Oratory flowed in full spate, the literary societies put on their finest performances, trustees convened for annual tradition at decision-making, and prizes and diplomas were handed out amidst a pan oply of pomp and circumstance." Though the size of the graduating class Rochester has grown from 10 men in 1851 to more than 2,000 men and women to day, and though many other developments have reshaped the ceremonies, today's program, like 1851's, marks the happy celebration of each grad uate's academic preparation and the hopeful prospect of new ventures.

The gowns have a long history Some of the features in today's ceremony date back to medieval times, such as the academic attire which recalls the gowns that were required dress at many European universities. Yet academic regalia did I hope you will be leaving this not figure into Rochester's earliest commencements: Both here and at University ready to assert your faith other U.S. universities, wearing the gowns was thought to be snobbish and undemocratic, possibly because university educations were associated in reason rather than dogma, in with European upper-class privilege. So for a number of years, only the president and the person who carried the diplomas wore gowns; the rationality rather than inevitability, graduating class didn't wear them until 1892. in the open rather than the The hood's color is the clue shuttered mind. . . . I hope you The most colorful portion of the academic costume is the hood, the are going to be willing to stand up color edging indicating the discipline to which the degree pertains: White and yellow-gold for arts and sciences; orange for engineering; apricot for against the bigots, the prophets of nursing; green for medicine; pink for the Eastman School of Music; light blue for the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human doom, the demagogues, who would Development; and drab for the William E. I hope you will be Symbols of authority ready to protest against life as usual The mace, originally a medieval weapon of defense, has in modern times becom-e a symbol of authority, dignity, and privilege. English uni in the face of unspeakable human versities have used maces in academic processions for many centuries; Rochester's mace first appeared at the 1935 induction of Alan Valentine tragedy . ... It is not going to be as president, and has been used in academic processions ever since. About enough for you to carry a banner or four feet long, it is made of mahogany and hand-wrought silver. On the head, the seal of the University appears. The names of the University's chant a slogan. It is going to mean presidents are engraved on two silver bands, and the dandelion, the floral symbol of the University, is the decorative motif of the silverwork. The becoming truly involved, making mace is carried by the University marshal, who leads the procession your commitment real, and your alongside an associate marshal who carries the less-imposing baton. determination to play an active The procession part in your world unflagging. The academic procession, one of the most colorful traditions, begins with participants assembling on Eastman Quadrangle, the symbolic center Sol Unowitz, 1991 of the University. The University carillonneur strikes a march tune, and the parade heads down Library Road to the pealing sounds from the bell tower. As the parade approaches Fauver Stadium, the University marshal escorts the president, provost, and representative of the board of trustees to are viewing stand where they greet the participants flowing into the stadium. 3

Today's doctoral candidates and members of the University faculty are at the front and center of the procession. The doctoral candidates are wearing gowns in Rochester's official colors of blue with dandelion yellow trim and berets of soft, black velvet. The styles and colors of the faculty's robes, hoods, and caps represent all the learned institutions from which they have come. Following the doctoral candidates are the master's degree candidates, each school and degree marked by a banner matching the candidates' hoods. The outer four columns are the baccalaureate candidates; again each school is marked by its college banner. When the candidates have passed, those on the reviewing stand join other University officers and distinguished guests and honorees. Signaled by the Wind Ensemble's fanfare, everyone in the stadium stands while the marshals, carrying mace and baton, escort the platform party to their places on stage. Then the commencement ceremony begins.

Music makes the day Music and prayer have been part of commencement from 1851 onward, though tastes in performers and selections have changed. Scott's Brass Band punctuated the earliest ceremonies with musical interludes, and performers have changed regularly through the years. However, from the early 1920s when the Eastman School was established, commencements have usually featured Eastman musical talent. The Eastman Wind Ensemble, perform ing under the direction of Donald Hunsberger, has appeared regularly at recent commencements.

Words to live by Commencement speakers have been inspiring Rochester graduates ever since Henry Ward Beecher gave a speech on "Character" at the 1851 ceremonies: Theodore Roosevelt, then governor of New York, spoke in 1900; New York Governor Mario Cuomo spoke in 1985, and another holder of the governor's seat, Thomas E. Dewey, spoke in 1957. Richard Nixon gave advice to 1966's graduates, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, accepting an honorary doctorate by trans-Atlantic radio during 1941's commencement, pleaded for Anglo-American unity in a character istically rousing speech.

Happy at heart on this day Perhaps the single feature that best links today's ceremonies to 1851's commencement is the audience. From 1851 onward, enthusiastic crowds have turned out to cheer on Rochester graduates. Newspapers say thousands of spectators witnessed the first commencement, as Scott's Brass Band led a parade toward Corinthian Hall. Following the band, "presumably in ascending order of dignity," Arthur May notes, were the University janitor, Rochester schoolchildren, undergraduates, teachers at the common schools, Board of Education representatives, the mayor and his top lieutenants, officials of state and county governments, University founders, courtroom judges, the 10 graduating seniors, professors, trustees, the chancellor, and the high sheriff of Monroe County. Among today's thousands of spectators, many are as distinguished and, no doubt, bursting with as much pride as the onlookers of 1851. 4 Commencement Ceremonies Thomas H. Honorary Elizabeth Dole, Doctor of Humane Letters Dole heads one of the world's largest humanitarian organizations, with 30,000 staff members and more than 1.5 million volunteers around Degree the world. Four months after joining the American Red Cross in 1991, Dole secured approval for a $148 million blood system designed to ensure and Award the safety of the blood supply. Dole launched a disaster relief campaign that raised $172 million in 1992, following two years of record-breaking Recipients natural disasters. She also has initiated internal financial accountability and cultural diversity programs. Born in Salisbury, N.C., Dole graduated with distinction from Duke University in 1958. She earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and also holds a master's degree in education and government from Harvard. Dole headed the White House Office of Consumer Affairs under Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, and served five years on the Federal Trade Commission. Named secretary of transportation in 1983, Dole was the first woman to hold that Cabinet post. Under her leadership, the Transportation Department passed a regulation requiring air bags or automatic safety belts in all new cars. Dole urged legislators to raise the drinking age to 21, directed an overhaul of the aviation safety inspection system, and oversaw the sale of CONRAIL. Dole became secretary oflabor in 1989. As President George Bush's chief adviser on labor and work force issues, she led efforts to resolve the 11-month Pittston Coal strike. Dole has been named in the Gallup Poll as one of the world's 10 most-admired women. In 1993, Women Executives in State Government honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and she was inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International. Also that year, the North Carolina Press Association named Dole its first North Carolinian of the Year.

David Satcher, Doctor of Science As director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, David Satcher leads national efforts to promote health and prevent disease, injury, and premature death. Satcher also administers the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, which works to prevent dan gerous health effects of exposure to hazardous substances. Before joining the CDC, Satcher was president of Me harry Medical College in Nashville. He also was professor and chairman of the Depart ment of Community and Family Medicine at Morehouse School of Medi cine. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine and King-Drew Medical Center, where he directed the King-Drew Sickle Cell Research Center, chaired the Department of Family Medicine, and served as interim dean. A native of Alabama, Satcher graduated from Morehouse College in 1963 and received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve Univer sity in 1970, with election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He did his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital. Honorary Degree , Doctor of Science and Award To Gary Becker, an economist at the University of , eco Recipients nomics is "a way of thinking about life." It is this novel approach to his craft that won Becker the for Economic Science in 1992. The prize recognized Becker's pioneering work in using economic calculus to analyze human behavior and in applying economic arguments to social and public-policy issues. Among the "real-life" situations to which he has applied economic theory are family behavior and racial and ethnic discrimination. Becker began his career in 1954 at the , where he earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. He moved to in 1957 and rejoined the Chicago faculty in 1969. Becker has been a Univer sity Professor in the Departments of Economics and since 1983. He is a senior fellow of the . Among his many honors are the University of Michigan's W S. Woytinsky Award and the Medal, given to an outstanding economist under 40. 43

Edward Peck Curtis Award for Undergraduate Teaching Ask the students who enroll in her electives, and they'll tell you this year's recipient of the undergraduate teaching award is "awesome." Celia Applegate, an associate professor of history, joined the Rochester faculty in 1988 and quickly made her mark as an outstanding teacher of European history. Students praise her well organized and well-argued lectures, her enthusiasm for the material, and her fairness in grading. She inspires students to meet her expectations, students say, and in the end they very often exceed their own. Applegate's energy has taken her beyond the history department. In recent years, she has been director of the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Women's Studies, as well as dean for freshmen and dean for sophomores. With a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Applegate will spend the 1995-96 academic year researching the cultural context of German music. She will study the connections between the making of music and the making of the German nation in the 19th century. The Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching was established by Edward Peck Curtis, Sr., a life trustee who died in 1987. It has been awarded annually since 1962.

University Award for Graduate Teaching Robert Morris, professor of composition and music theory at the Eastman School of Music, ranks among the world's top music theorists. He also is a favorite professor of many Eastman graduate students. His 43-page curriculum vitae is testament to the energy he applies to his gifts as a composer, scholar, and teacher. Former pupils, many of whom have modeled their own successful teaching careers after Morris's, praise their mentor for the push he gave them to excel. ''As a classroom teacher and a dissertation adviser," writes one, "he expected more of me than I expected of myself; he inspired me to accomplish more than I thought I was able." Morris's fast-paced, engaging mode of instruction-sprinkled with off-beat humor-and the extraordinary level of work he expects from his students "propelled all of us to stretch the limits of our abilities," writes another. So engaging are his courses that students are often drawn to audit them even after they have completed their degree requirements. A 15-year faculty member, Morris encourages his music theory and composition students to pursue a wide range of scholarly topics, even when they are not of his own inclination. One former student notes Morris's skill to recognize "potential at an early stage: the potential of a student, of a proposed project, and of the matching of the two." The University Award for Graduate Teaching was established in 1987 to recognize faculty members who have excelled in graduate instruction, especially in doctoral programs. The award complements the longstanding Edward Peck C urtis Award for undergraduate teaching. Honorary Degree Hutchison Medal and Award The Hutchison Medal, first awarded in 1977, is the highest honor Recipients the University gives its alumni; it recognizes outstanding achievements and notable service to community, state, or nation. Doriot Anthony Dwyer, this year's Hutchison medalist, became the first woman to hold a principal chair in a major American orchestra when she was appointed principal flutist of the Boston Symphony O rchestra in 1952. Since then, she has appeared as soloist with other leading orchestras and with such noted conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Works for flute and orchestra have been dedicated to Dwyer, including a concerto written in her honor when she retired in 1990 to pursue solo work. She also has had a fruitful recording career. A 1943 graduate of Eastman School of Music, Dwyer has received numerous citations for her musical accomplishments and has been named to the Women's Hall of Fame.

James William Johnson, Orator Those who receive honorary degrees at commencement are people whose accomplishments have truly made a difference in the world. The University's orator expresses that impact in a prose citation, which he reads when presenting the candidates to the president. ]. W. Johnson, professor of English at the University, is the orator. As a professor in the College, he teaches 18th-century British literature, modern drama, and film. He has written eight books. 45

The Ensemble members are Eastman School of Music students, many of Eastman whom are graduating at this commencement. From its formation in 1952 by Frederick Fennell, the Eastman Wind Ensemble has taken an approach decidedly different from that of the traditional wind band. Wind The Ensemble has since become a model for others of its kind around the world, and has been credited with spurring a renaissance in symphonic Ensemble wind music. Donald Hunsberger, professor of conducting and ensembles, has directed the group since 1965. Seven major tours have reinforced the Ensemble's reputation. During the summers of 1990, 1992, and 1994, they made extensive tours of Japan. The group routinely performed as many as five encores before enthusiastic, sell-out crowds in Japanese concert halls. Plans are being made for their 1996 Japan Tour. The Ensemble's more than 50 recordings have set the performance standard for wind ensembles. "Carnaval," a 1987 release of turn-of-the century cornet solos with Wynton Marsalis, was nominated for a Grammy Award and reached # 1 on Billboard's Compact Disc Chart. The most re cent release is "Live at Osaka," a Sony Classical CD recorded during the 1990 Japan Tour. The Ensemble recently received the 1994 Crystal Award, one of two prized Symphony Hall International Music Awards presented by the Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Music Foundation in Osaka, Japan. Past winners include the Vienna Philharmonic, Emanuel Ax, Isaac Stern, Jessye Norman, and Yo Yo Ma.

The Hopeman Memorial Carillon, named for Arendt Willem Hopeman, The a prominent Rochester builder, consists of 50 bronze bells cast by Eijsbouts of The Netherlands. In addition to its frequent use as a performance in strument, the Hopeman Carillon has been an educational resource: Stu Carillon dents of the acoustics and physics of music have studied its reverberations, Eastman faculry and student composers have written for it, and students and and alumni study carillon technique on it. Daniel Harrison, associate professor of music in the College Music Pro gram and of music theory at Eastman School of Music, is the carillonneur Carillonneur for today's ceremonies. 46
