RPSAlan Constable Good afternoon everyone It has seemed a long pre-season but the opening competitive match has arrived and we welcome everyone from Chalfont St. Peter to a much re-furbished Short Lane. As though of you who attended last week’s exciting friendly against Basingstoke Town will have witnessed, we now have a new tea and burger bar opposite the halfway line, the Boardroom has been enlarged and modernised and most important matter of all is the work that has been done on the pitch to bring it back to how it has usually been in the past. The weather has helped, of course, in the latter respect but after the justified criticism last season it was gratifying to read such pleasant comments about it from Basingstoke Town after last week’s match. A huge thank you therefore goes to everyone who has worked upon these various projects through the summer. In what will be our third spell in the Isthmian League this is now our second season back and we face a challenge with almost all of last season’s squad moving on to other clubs where doubtless, they have been tempted by an extra shilling or so. It is tough upon our new manager Russell Canderton and assistant Scott Weight who have had to re-build almost from scratch, although we thank those lads who have stayed with us. One of them. Max Webb, is the new club captain. Pre-season results not unexpectedly have not gone well but it doesn’t matter. With some 70 lads at the opening training session it has taken time to come up with a squad capable of playing at this level and last Saturday’s game against Basingstoke Town, which we lost in stoppage time, 3-4, after going up 3-2 with 15 minutes left, showed that we are not so far away. Chalfont are one of our more popular visitors without a doubt. They are a club similar to our own and we always enjoy their company in our boardroom and so on. Last season Chalfont finished in 14th place in the table but they too are under new management and may well be a completely different outfit this season. One player definitely gone is ex-Ashford striker Dan Fleming who has joined Southall. Chalfont have been something of a bogey team to us but after failing to beat them on 10 consecutive occasions in the Southern League (although a number of them were draws) we finally took three points off them last season when we won here by two goals to nil courtesy of James Cottee and Nebay Haile. Chalfont had the last word though when they beat us 2-1 at their ground in April. We are on the road on Tuesday evening with a difficult trip through the rush hour to get to Tooting & Mitcham United. Kick-off is 7.45 p.m. After that it’s the FA Cup and we will be playing away to Sutton Athletic a club unknown to us previously but they play in Division One of the South East Counties League. They beat Deal Town in the previous round, winning 3-2 with a last minute goal. They also won their opening league match 7-0. Their ground is in Swanley, Kent and rumours that they ground share are (we think) unfounded and we will be going there next Saturday. The address of the ground is Sutton Athletic FC, The Pavilion, Lower Road, Hextable, The Pavilion, Lower Road, Hextable, Kent, BR8 7RZ. There will be more details on our website in due course.

Back to this afternoon and please spread the word that, at £5 entry, we are almost certainly the cheapest place in the country to watch Step 4 football. This is an experiment for league matches (only) until the end of September. If it goes well, and more people come through the door, we will keep it going for the whole season Enjoy the match.

9 @ashfordtownmx A note from our Chairman Nick Bailey

I’d like to welcome everyone to Ashford Town for the start of the new season. There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes, and around the ground, throughout the summer and it couldn't have been done without our loyal team of volunteers and committee members. Personally I would like to thank Jason, Graham, Russell, Steve, and Liam, for all their long hours and tremendous work put in over the close season. Our pitch is now back to being the surface we are used to playing, well done lads! You may have noticed that out tea bar has been relocated to the half way line. A lot of work had to go into renovating this and bringing it up to standard, and I am sure you’ll agree it has surpassed all our expectations. This is down to the considerable work put in to it by Jason. Huge thanks to him for getting this all done so it was up and running in time for our first home games. There have also been big changes on the playing side. Good luck today to our new management team of Russell, Scott, and Steve, and to all of our loyal existing players and the new players who have joined us over the summer. I would also like to wish the best of luck to all the lads who decided to move on to different clubs. We have some exciting projects and developments ahead for the club over the next 12-18 months, which will benefit everyone from the 380 youth players, Sunday teams, and Under 18’s, right through to our senior men and women’s sides. We will keep you all updated as and when we can. I hope you all enjoy the game today, and I look forward to seeing all of our loyal supporters during our upcoming games. Bring on the new season!

11 @ashfordtownmx Today’s Opponents Chalfont St Peter

Club History The club was formed in 1926 and played local junior football from its ground on Gold Hill Common. 1948 saw a move to the Great Western Combination and a year later the club moved to its present location, although the picturesque name of Mill Meadow belies its origins as a refuse tip. As the club developed off the field thanks to the support of many volunteers so success began to arrive on thefield and in 1952 the first silverware was won, the Berks & Bucks FA Intermediate Cup. Senior status followed and progress through the Parthenon League, League and Spartan League followed. The early 1970’s were difficult for the club but a move into the Athenian league saw a change in fortunes.

The 1980’s, now in the Isthmian League, brought some consistency in league performances and some successful campaigns in the FA Cup and FA Vase.

The 1990’s was another difficult decade, culminating in a low point of two successive bottom places.

2001/02 saw a rebuild under Martin Dean with a good start to the season but a subsequent falling away saw them finish 14th. The lower echelons became the accustomed territory for Saints for several seasons until Dean’s departure at the end of the 2003/04 season.

Managing Chalfont to victory in the Berks & Bucks Under-18 Challenge Cup was a young Danny Edwards. His reward was to be handed the reins of the First Team for the new season. And so began a rollercoaster ride of success and near misses that continued until just recently.

A restructuring within the Isthmian league at the end of the 2005/06 season saw Saints moving to the Spartan South Midlands .

2006/07 saw a top half finish in their first season in the Spartan and a trophy for the cabinet, the Wycombe Senior Cup, secured with a 7-0 win over Downley Albion at the Wycombe Wanderers ground.

2007/08 was a hugely successful season. Danny Edwards was developing an exciting squad and the style of play was both entertaining and successful. Good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase came together with a Final appearance in the Premier Division Cup. Topping them all was winning the Challenge Trophy with a 2-0 win over Brimsdown Rovers. A close three-horse race in the league saw Saints pipped at the post into runners-up spot.

2008/09 was about building on the standards set in the previous season. And it didn’t disappoint. Some top scalps in the FA Cup heralded a season of cup runs. The FA Vase was the crowning glory, with the Saints making it all the way to the semi-final and being heart breaking seconds away from winning the right to play at Wembley. Saints were in the hunt for the league title all the way to the last week of the

12 #ASHCSP ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com season but the fixture congestion caused by the cup successes began to tell and they couldn’t quite make it across the line, eventually finishing a brave third. Losses in the finals of the Challenge Trophy and the Wycombe Senior Cup took a little bit of the shine off what was a brilliant season for the club.

Expectations were high going into season 2009/10 after going close to promotion in the two previous seasons. A slow start and a nightmare run of losses in October saw the title chase wobble and rapid exits from all cup competitions. But an incredible run of form with just one defeat in 23 took Saints to the top to the pile where they became the target for other teams’ top performances and it wasn’t until they were overtaken by Aylesbury in the last two games that they had to settle for the runners-up spot again.

At the start of 2010/11, the aim was clear: promotion was the number one target. Getting off to an incredible start in notching up seventeen straight wins, Saints grabbed top spot and refused to relinquish it for the entire season, never being less than four points clear at any stage. The focus was clear and any progress in the cups was quickly curtailed. Such was the dominance in the league, the champagne corks popped with five games to spare as the title was secured. The curtain was brought down on the record breaking season and their five year stay in the Spartan League by winning the Challenge Trophy for an unprecedented league and cup double.

For the 2011/12 season, life was expected to be a trial for Saints yet they made a bright start in their new environs and quickly acclimatised. For long periods they were genuine contenders but a poor end to the season, combined with the loss of totemic striker Charlie Strutton to the professional ranks, saw them fall away into the mid table.

A strong run in the FA Cup illuminated the 2012/13 season. An impressive win at Carshalton Athletic earned a tie against Conference side Bishop’s Stortford. A draw at Mill Meadow set up a replay that ultimately proved a step too far. Playing with style, Saints were to earn the Division’s Fair Play title but couldn’t reach the play-off positions.

With a lack of firepower, the 2013/14 was a disappointing way to mark Danny Edwards’ tenth season in charge. The lack of goals consigned the side to a mid-table finish despite boasting one of the meanest defences.

2014/15 saw the goals begin to return. A promising start saw the side hard to beat but too many draws held them back. A run in the FA Cup, highlighted by a deserved win in front of a baying Kettering crowd

13 @ashfordtownmx

Chalfont St Petercontinued

was coupled with a strong run in November that saw the club in a playoff position but from such heights, a miserable New Year run saw them tumble down into relegation territory. It took a stubborn recovery in April to ensure eventual safety.

2015/16 was a highwater mark for Saints in their current run in the Southern League. Putting aside an early exit in the FA Cup Saints went on to head the table at New Year and looked set for their first tilt at the play offs, if not more. Sadly they repeated the poor run of results thereafter and fell away to finish sixth. Still an excellent all-round season as Tony Mendy secured top scorer honours in the division with 30 goals.

In contrast, season 2016/17 was possibly the poorest in over a decade. A storming start to the season saw Saints in top spot throughout August but the hole left by the departed Mendy was never filled and as the goals dried up so the Tony Mendy in action for Chalfont St Peter tumble down the table gathered pace. Some poor signings added to the problems and the second half of the season delivered just four wins and for a while relegation was a real possibility before safety was finally achieved.

2017/18 was one of our most exciting seasons in the Southern League, our seventh, with the side in playoff contention right up until the final few games. Our peerless record against those sides who ultimately claimed the top places, with just the single defeat in 12 games, including a notable double against champions Beaconsfield Town, underlined how competitive a side we were. Still struggling for goals, it was our defence that led the way with 16 clean sheets. It was a season that saw evergreen skipper Alan Hedley pass the 500 games mark and manager Danny Edwards reach 700 games in charge. Saints embrace change but enjoy stability at the same time.

2018/19 saw Saints return to the Isthmian League after 12 seasons as football was restructured. An inconsistent defence and a shortage of goals ensured Saints were unable to escape the mid-table places. Towards the end of the season, Danny Edwards signalled his wish to step down from the role he had held with such distinction and Saints had to begin the process of finding a new manager.

The dawn of the 2019/20 season sees Saints, not only with a new management team, led by Finlay Johnson, another young manager being given the opportunity to prove himself at the higher level, but also a wholly new squad as players followed Edwards to new pastures. The opportunity to build something new from the ground up promises to be an exciting one.

Un d er 18 co ach i n g staff (fro m l eft to ri g h t): Davi d G u l l y, S am E aso n , an d F i n Kemp As mentioned in previous notes, we are very pleased to have a new Under 18 team in place for this coming season. After the turmoil of last year everything is in place and the side will be playing in the Combined Counties League Under 18 Western Division. Managed by Finlay Kemp, most of the side have made the step up from his Under 16 team of last season, and in their first full preseason friendly ran out 9-2 winners over Leatherhead Youth - after going 2 down in the early stages! Their first home game will see them hosting Chertsey Town U18 in a preseason friendly at the RPS on Wednesday 21st August, kick off 7:30pm / 7:45pm (TBC). Come on down and show your support for the young Tangerines. In readiness for their first home game next week here’s a little intro to Fin and his coaching staff......

Finlay Kemp Kemp - Manager - Manager Fin has been involved in football for over 40 years as a player and a coach. He then went over to the USA where he spent 9 years coaching various levels including high school teams and as Director of Football at Youth Club level. After returning to the UK in 2015, David joined the coaching staff at Ashford Town and was part of the team that won promotion from the Combined Counties League to the Southern League in 2015/2016. In 2016 David moved to Woking FC where he spent two years as their Academy Assistant Manager, before returning to Ashford this summer to join Fin and the new Under 18 set up. Work always tended to get in the way when playing, but he has no regrets. Sam accepted the call to join Fin’s coaching staff and is looking forward to being on the team for this season.

While the excitement for the brand new season was building up to unprecedented levels this summer, I was alerted to a truly remarkable story, which serves as a constant reminder of the preciousness of life. The journey that Travis Munn has been on over the last few months is one that has pushed him to the very limits of human courage, bravery and strength. Diagnosed with the degenerative disease Scleroderma in 2016, the former Mansfield Town and Boston United defender was later presented with the crushing news that his condition had become terminal. “It just hits you like a ton of bricks, it is absolutely impossible to process” said Munn. “I sat there and asked how long I had left. The doctor said ‘it is impossible to say whether it will be as little as three months or as long as three years’. “How do you break that to your family? How do you tell your parents or your partner that you won’t be here for much longer? Coming through the ranks at Mansfield, Munn soon earned a reputation as an all energy defender, capable of competing with the very best. However, it was after dipping his toes into Non-League football with Boston United that he started to pick up on a number of concerning signs. “I had always been blessed with a good level of fitness, which had been my biggest attribute as a player” added Munn. “All of a sudden I was the least fit player at the club. I couldn’t understand it. I was doing extra sessions but I would wake up the next morning in absolute bits. I would be tearing up and thinking that I couldn’t carry on with it. “I spoke with my dad and he was asking me ‘why is it that you can’t do your running anymore?’ He was asking if I was having troubles in my personal life or whether I was getting into alcohol. “Even my manager started to wonder if I was taking drugs. It was becoming unbearable and it was at that point that I needed to find out why I was feeling like this”. As the devastating disease took its hold, Munn was forced to put aside any thoughts of football and come to terms with the unthinkable prospect of leaving behind his young family. However, one evening as he sat at home, a speculative search of the internet presented the former Boston defender with a potential miracle. He said, “I was just on the computer when a story came up about someone who had, had a stem cell transplant. “What they do is they blast you with the most amount chemotherapy that you can possibly have until you are basically at death’s door. “They then put the stem cells back and hopefully it works. It is hugely risky and there is a very real chance that you might die during the treatment.

“I kind of said goodbye to people because I thought to myself if it somehow works then great but I would rather die trying to do something about this than just lying there and letting it kill me, which it was. “That was about seven months ago and to have come out of the other side is incredible. Just thinking about it brings a tear to my eye”. Having left hospital just before the turn of the year, Munn has undergone a truly remarkable return to strength and after battling against all the odds, he made an extraordinary return to football this pre- season with East Midland Counties League side Borrowash Victoria. “I simply can’t describe what I was feeling when I stepped back onto the pitch” said the inspirational defender. “I managed to play for 80 minutes in the first game, my whole family was there and when I came off my mum was crying, that nearly got me going but I just about managed to hold it together. “To have been in a position where just a short time ago my next step was death, I have learned to cherish every single moment that I get. So, as we all attend another round of tantalising fixtures this week, win, lose or draw, let’s just be thankful for all that life has to offer.
