His 13 assists (12 primary) this season helped him become only the second Bulldog to get 100 career helpers. Miller, 8th on Yale’s career points list, is also among a select group of college players who have more points than career games played. He has been ranked among the top 10 in Division I for assists the last three years and was voted “best passer” by his teammates the last three years. His two goals against SLU on Nov. 10 this year were a career-high. Miller, a 2010-11 fi rst-team All-ECAC pick, had 12-33-45 that season and was fourth in the nation in assists. More impressive was that 22 of his 33 assists were primary. The 33 helpers were second best Brooke Miller at Yale and a sophomore school record. His best offensive weekend as a collegian came in Feb. 2011 when he hit the net three times vs. Colgate/Cornell. As a freshman, Miller (Bloomfi eld Hills, Mich.), was 12th in the nation in points and registered the most (34) points by a Yale rookie in 25 years. The speedy forward was the 2008-09 USA Junior Player of the Year and 2007 Michigan High School Mr. Hockey.

Agostino, featured in a recent hockeysfuture.com article, had 14 goals and 34 points in 2011-12, while he earned ECAC Player of the Week honors for his three-goal, Feb. 17-18 weekend. 2011-12 YALE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY GAME NOTES PAGE 6 Keith Allain, Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach of Yale Hockey

Allain, a former NHL and Olympics assistant, was named the 11th head coach of the Yale Men’s Hockey program on April 15, 2006. Allain is the third Yale graduate to take the position. Yale Hockey’s’ unprecedented success since Keith Allain ‘80 took over in 2006 has elevated the Bull- dogs to be recognized among the nation’s perennial powers. Allain, Yale’s Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach of Hockey, led the Blue to the best win percentage (.752) among Division I teams over a span of three (2008-11) seasons while coming within a game of two straight Frozen Four appearances.

FOLLOWING LEGENDS Allain, replaced his mentor, Tim Taylor (1976-2006), whose fi rst team included Allain, who com- pleted his 12th overall year at Yale: four as a student, three as an assistant coach in the early 1980s and six as head coach. Only Taylor (337, 28 years) and (278, 27) have more wins at Yale than Allain, who owns a 14-9 post season record.

MOST RECENTLY During the 2010-11 campaign Allain’s squad set the school record for wins (28-7-1), becoming the fi rst Bulldog team to be voted No. 1 in the national polls (2 straight months), held the top PairWise Ranking for most of the year, won four straight conference playoff games to capture their third consecutive ECAC Hockey Championship and beat Air Force in OT at the NCAA East Regional as the top seed in the 16-team fi eld. In addition, the Blue ended the season with Division I’s top offense, defense and winning percentage. College Hockey News in the 2008-09 season named Keith Allain National Coach of the Year.

NHL Allain previously head goalie coach position for the St. Louis Blues from 1998 to 2006, watched his netminders give up the fewest goals in the NHL in 1999-2000, claiming the William M. Jennings Trophy. That season the Blues captured the President’s Trophy for the best regular-season record in the league. His professional hockey coaching experience also includes serving as a scout for the NHL’s in 1997-98 and a four-year (1993-97) stint as an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals, where he helped Jim Carey win the 1996 Vezina Trophy.

2011-12 YALE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY GAME NOTES PAGE 12 COLLEGE HOCKEY BEGAN AT YALE

A group of Yale student-athletes heading to Baltimore in January of 1896 began the history of college hockey in America. It’s hard to imagine that two Yale tennis players in the class of 1896 – Mal- colm Chace and Arthur Foote – going to Canada for tournaments would lead to hockey coming to the U.S. While on those trips, the two Elis were exposed to a game Canadians began playing aft er see- ing British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia trying it. Chace and Foote formed a Yale hockey team and arranged for its fi rst offi cial games on that trip to Baltimore. Aft er facing off against the Baltimore Athletic Club on Jan. 31 (a 3-2 loss), the Bull- dogs made history. Th e next day they skated to a 2-2 tie with Johns Hopkins in the fi rst U.S. intercollegiate ice hockey game. Yale quickly became one of the nation’s elite teams, winning intercollegiate titles in 1899, 1900 and 1902. Until 1911, the team played its home games on outdoor rinks, including Lake Whitney on the New Haven – Hamden town line. Th e school opened an indoor structure at Yale Field in 1911 with the largest ice surface in the country at that time (190 feet by 90 feet). Th e Elis beat M.I.T. on Jan. 13, 1911, to open the arena, but it was soon closed because of ground problems. Yale’s fi rst coach was Frederick Rocque in 1916-17, though it did not have a coach stay for more than one year until Clarence Wanamaker took over the program in 1921. Wanamaker led the Elis for seven years, including an 18-4-1 season in 1923-24 and a 14-1-1 campaign the following year. Aft er 1924, the team played on various outdoor rinks until moving into the “new” in January 1927. Wanamaker was succeeded as coach in 1928 by Larry Noble ’27, a former captain who led Yale to an incredible 32-2-2 mark. Former Yale Holcomb York ’17 was coach from 1930 until 1938, an era during which fi ve Olympians played at Yale. Yale joined the Quadrangular League in 1934 along with Dartmouth, Harvard and Princeton (now the Ivy League). Th e Elis won the fi rst league title in 1934-35, compiling a 6-1 record against three conference foes. Murray Murdoch, the fi rst player ever signed by the , took over in 1938 and did not let go for 27 seasons. He led Yale to a 278-236-20 mark, a Quadrangular League title in 1940, a Pen- tagonal League crown in 1952 (Army added in 1941, league name changed) and led the Blue to the 1952 NCAA Championship appearance. Some of the great skaters in Yale history played for Murdoch, including Jack Morrison ’67 (1968 Olympian) and goaltender Gerry Jones ’59 (Yale’s fi rst All-American in 1959). Aft er a short stays by two head coaches (Dick Gagliardi, Paul Lufk in), Tim Taylor began a run of 30 years (28 behind the bench) at the helm of the program in 1976. In his fi rst game, Yale defeated Penn for the school’s fi rst offi cial Ivy win in more than two years. Taylor, head coach of the 1994 U.S. Olympic Team, went on to lead the Elis to an ECAC title along with six Ivy crowns and a trip to the 1998 NCAA Tourna- ment. He surpassed Murdoch for the most wins in school history (337-433-55, 28 seasons) and raised the visibility of a program that had fi ve wins combined in its two seasons before his arrival. Murdoch Five Hobey Baker Memorial Award fi nalists played for Taylor: Bob Brooke ’84, Mark Kaufmann’93, Ray Giroux ’98, Jeff Hamilton ’01 (twice) and Chris Higgins ’05, who is one of a dozen Bulldogs who have played in the and, playing for Vancouver, came within a game of the 2011 Stanley Cup Championship. Today, Yale men’s ice hockey is a New England institution with national prominence. Th e 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010- 11 squads compiled Division I’s top winning percentage over that span. Th e Bulldogs have consistently drawn packed houses at Ingalls Rink to watch the Blue under Keith Allain ’80. Th e Elis won two ECAC regular-season championships (2008-09, 2009- 10), two conference tournament titles (2009, 2011), four Ivy League crowns and three (2009, 10, 11) straight NCAA tourna- ments (two straight NCAA Regional fi nals). In 1998, just over a century aft er he laced up his skates for Yale, Malcolm G. Chace was memorialized when the head coaching job was named in his honor. Th e coaching position is funded by a gift from his grandson, Malcolm G. Chace ‘56. Th e college hockey landscape has seen major changes since Chace led the fi rst Eli skaters down to Baltimore in 1896. Some things stay the same - Yale’s vital role in the history of college hockey and the sense of pride that every player, coach and fan feels when the Bulldogs take the ice.
