Dear Miege Friends,

“I don’t have to worry about Bishop Miege because they come to me with solutions to challenges rather than problems.” These words were stated 2019-2020 FOUNDATION BOARD by Archbishop Naumann this past November to those gathered at our 25th The Bishop Miege Foundation was created in 1992 Foundation Dinner. We have hosted as a financial advisory group. Today, its purpose this event every year since 1995 with one of the purposes being has grown to benefit Bishop Miege by assisting the to thank and recognize members of the Miege community for school with fund raising and volunteer activities, their exceptional stewardship. The Archbishop was referring to the leadership provided by the Bishop Miege Foundation Board for their service in guiding our school through many challenging times. Since 1992 the group has come up with solutions to 2019-2020 MEMBERS serious issues involving facility decline, the opening of two Bill Dunn, Sr. John Waldeck Dr. Joe Passantino new Catholic high schools and tuition affordability for our Emeritus Chairman President families.

Stags Supporting Their School

STAG STRUT Miege students collect pledge donations in support of their education by taking part in the annual Stag Strut. The school-wide event generates revenue to help off-set the more than $1,000 difference between the actual cost of education vs. tuition. The students reached their goal of $60,000 with 95% participation. It was a great day for students and faculty alike, while at the same time, helping raise the necessary funds for the school at the same time.

MAGAZINE & COOKIE DOUGH SALE The Bishop Miege Annual Magazine and Cookie Dough Sale kicked off on January. Credit goes to the diligence of Miege students, families and staff who worked to raise $37,688. Through buying and renew- ing magazines or purchasing cookie dough during this campaign, we acknowledge your continued support of Bishop Miege and its programs.

STAG SHOP The Stag Shop is a resource for the students, alumni and friends of the school to purchase spirit wear, uniforms and gifts all year. In addition to student fundraisers, the profits from the Bishop Miege Stag Shop benefit student activities and programs.

All are invited to show their Miege spirit by flying our flag, adhering a car sticker, wearing the red and blue Bishop Miege logo, or placing a yard sign in yard to help support Bishop Miege High School. The shop is open while school is in session at various times and is now available online at: bishopmiegestagshop.com.

College Readiness

At Bishop Miege we have implemented a STREAM curriculum with the integration of Religion and the Arts into STEM content areas. STREAM responds to career readiness for the current generation. A cross-integration of curriculum for deeper learning with technology and collaboration, merging 21st century teaching and learn- ing with the timeless truths of faith and beauty in all of the subject areas.

STREAM is not a new curriculum, nor is it a specific subject. STREAM is a creative method of teaching a concept across a variety of subjects. STREAM uses technology to advance the experience. Not only do students use traditional text, but use white boards, Smartboards, laptops and collaboration to process and learn.

Working in creative spaces and working outside the Interdisciplinary and applied approaches to Science, Technology, Religion, standard scope and sequence of every day classroom Engineering, Arts and Mathematics with creative collaborative spaces. STREAM challenges the way teachers teach and more importantly, how students learn. Rather than passively As a Catholic school, our mission is to educate the whole absorbing lecture material to repeat back during the next student; therefore, taking the principles of STEM infusing test, STREAM learners delve into the unknown, asking questions and seeking answers that are real and Religion, and adding the arts to provide students the creative thinking skills necessary to communicate and advance in relevant to their lives so that they are better prepared the real world. for life beyond high school.

The new math hub located in the Kincaid Media Center is a place for students to go throughout the day for enrichment with a Math teacher for all levels of math. The quiet space allows for collaboration for students to work on projects and share expertise.

This years’ musical was more challenging with all the dance numbers being tap. Most of the students had never tapped before but with a lot of time, effort, and prepration the cast pulled off the dance numbers with ease.

EMBRACEing Miege A new “Go Stags Go!” Snack Shop has opened by our special needs students that are part of an Entrepreneurship class. The students fill orders and deliver the snacks to teachers during 4th hour. The students also sold handmade Christmas cards during the holiday season.

With funding from *EMBRACE, the program is overseen by Miege’s new Learning Resource Director, Mallorie Hurlbert. She is a 2003 alum with two Master’s degrees from the University of Kansas, obtaining her license in Social Work and Educational Leadership.

The mission of EMBRACE is to provide children with special needs the oppor- tunity for an inclusive education by providing the resources to support these children in their home schools.

On April 27, 2019, “Hats off to Miege” annual auction was a huge success under the leadership from Auction Chairs Greg (’78) and Danielle (’79) Wilcox. It was an evening of fun and surprises as over $409,000 was raised to support Catholic education at Bishop Miege High School.

It was a record setting year for the Fund-a-Need with over $169,000 raised for Phase I of the renovation of the South entrance and replacing the lighting in the auditorium.

The overwhelming success was a reflection of the efforts and dedication from our volunteer efforts of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends of Miege. THANK YOU!

SAVE THE DATE! April 25, 2020 6:00 PM

The 47th annual school auction is set for April 25th, it is the largest fundraiser to benefit Bishop Miege. TURF & TRACK

Bishop Miege was one of the first schools in the area to have an artificial surface playing field. Twelve years later, the lifespan of the turf and track was near its end. In the summer of 2019, the turf and track was replaced and upgraded with the help of generous donors: Doug and Karen Burton Joe and Christy Heller David and Jennifer Putz Sean Walsh Dan and Erin Dercher Jeff and Julie Henshaw Manu and Dawn Rattan Carl and Nancy Wasinger David and Sara Doeren Vincent Key and April Hall-Key Randy and Lynn Salisbury Dan Waters Bill and Marianne Dunn Dick and Maureen Pedrotti Brian Sallee Don and Julie Welsh Kirk and Mendi Eskew Marc and Angie Pedrotti Hal and Kathryn VonWyl Eddie Welsh

The blessing of the new track and turf took place on September 6th before the first home game at Dixon Doll Stadium. The Dave Doeren Family Plaza was dedicated prior to the game:

“It’s a privilege to be a member of the Miege family. Many of my childhood memories were made in this stadium. Lessons were taught, lifelong friendships were made, and tough united teams were forged through shared adversities and tremendous competitive strain. As a former student- thleete and current coach I am so proud to see Miege thrive. For those who come next, fight to continue to raise the bar and know that all of us stand with you in your journey to leave your legacy.“ -Dave Doeren, Class of 1990, member of the 1989 Varsity football team

Dorothy Josephine Murphy Spezze

Dorothy served as a teacher for 42 years at Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, KS. In addition to teaching typing and business classes, she served as alumni director and was the moderator of the cheerleading and pep clubs. She passed away in October, 2019.

Before retiring from Miege, Dorothy was asked, “What have you most loved about Miege?

“Miege, since its beginning in 1958, has held a special place in my heart and life. This deep truth has been in my relationships with everyone involved in what was, not a building called Miege, but a community of people, students, faculty, parents, alumni, and friends-all sharing a special ministry in an ongoing search for truth in an environment conducive to human and Christian values. I’ve continued this search since retirement with the Miege community whether it might be through contact and work with the Miege Open , reunions or volunteer work in the Miege Development Office. Miege has been good! Life has been better !! This community has been the best!!!”

Coach Bob Tavernaro

Bob was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 30th, 1943, and spent his life in the Kansas City area where he taught and coached for over forty years at several area schools. He passed away in November, 2019. He began his teaching and coaching career at Bishop Miegee Fall of ‘79 to Spring of ‘84. He also taught in several schools around the Metro including Southwest High in KCMO, Grandview, Shawnee Mission Northwest, Blue Valley North, Blue Springs, Raytown, and finally returning to Bishop Miege where he finished his coaching career.

During his career, he was a part of teams that won many conference and state titles. He earned four conference ‘Coach of the Year’ awards, as well as the honor of being inducted into the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Mackenzie Rae Cowan, 15, a Bishop Miege sophomore passed away on September 27, 2019 as a result of brain cancer. She fought the battle fiercely for four years and endured countless labs, chemo treatments, surgeries and hospital stays. Mackenzie played and loved her time with the Drama Club.

Miege supported Mackenzie throughout her illness using the hashtag #TeamMackenzie and wearing purple in support of her at various school events. Hundreds of students turned out for a candle light vigil at her parents home to honor the strength and courage she showed during her battle.

Creating a lasting legacy. Why Miege?

Excerpt from retired teacher, Clara George following 40 Years of teaching and leadership at Bishop Miege.

My husband Bob and I shared a passion for education. While we were both working we tried to be good stewards of many blessings and we began to envision ways to invest in our passion. Then retirement gave us a clearer view of how to leave our assets as a legacy to support that passion. Bob’s diagnosis and passing interrupted our plans to realize our vision. Left in my hands, it has been an honor to fulfill our shared plans and hopes by creating the George Living Trust naming the Bishop Miege Foundation as a beneficiary. We want to support future Miege students in their pursuit of growing and learning in a faith infused community.

Although I have had to be the face of the trust, it is important to me that everyone knows this: it is our, Bob’s and mine, combined spirit that leaves this legacy.

Sincerely, Clara George

Building God’s Kingdom in Kansas One Catholic Legacy Gift at a Time.

For decades, Bishop Miege has been blessed by a remarkable commitment to our school from our parents, alumni and friends. We ask for your continued support as we work to ensure a strong future for Bishop Miege High School.

As you plan for your future, please consider a planned gift to Bishop Miege. There are many options available so we encourage you to visit with your attorney and/or financial planner to determine the best way to remember Bishop Miege in your estate plans.

TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS: • Bequests: Designate a gift to Bishop Miege in your will or trust. • Charitable Gift Annuity: In return for a donation, receive a fixed income for life. • Charitable Remainder Trust: Transfer assets irrevocably to a trust, receive an income for life and the remainder goes to Bishop Miege upon your death. • Retained Life Estate: Donate your residence to Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on a certificate of deposit, an annuity, IRA or retirement plan. • Life Insurance: Designate Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy or gift a policy you no longer need.
