See Europe in Brooklyn! 4 Abstract This thesis proposes a new way of thinking about relations between literary modernism and movement by exploring the writings of Anglo-American women published between 1913 and 1930. Crossing borders to ‘foreign’ places is an instance of movement particularly relevant to the colonial geopolitics and ethnographic projects in Britain, Europe and North America in the early twentieth century. In the discourse of anthropology and sexology – gradually emerging as disciplines with ‘scientific’ ambitions at the time – travels abroad served as a way of gathering knowledge empirically: ‘men of science’ traversing national borders to gather data is a central and gendered aspect in the production of anthropological and sexological knowledge. This thesis brings into critical focus the scientific paradigm of travel with the aim of illustrating the ways in which border crossings and ‘foreign’ spaces figure in literature’s engagement with forms of knowing sexual otherness in the early twentieth century. Texts by Olive Moore, Natalie Clifford Barney, and Djuna Barnes are read as sites appropriating and interrogating movement as a gendered way of knowing through experiments with narrative movement, textual space, female authorship, and the legibility of eccentric bodies. How movement is mobilised as a practice of knowing sexual otherness not only in anthropological and sexological publications but also in modernist studies is the subject of Chapter One. Chapters Two to Four explore the distinct ways in which the complex relationship between gendered movement and sexual knowledge shapes the experimental aesthetics of texts published by Anglo-American women writers between 1913 and 1930. Chapter Two examines how the story of an ‘unnatural’ English woman’s emigration to an island in Southern Italy in Moore’s Spleen (1930) aligns deviations from gender norms with geographical peripheries but, at the same time, complicates this correspondence. The oscillation between loyally replicating and ironically mimicking ‘scientific’ discourse on gender, sexuality and race characterize a novel invested in figuring itself as different whilst taking dialectical recourse to existing paradigms of difference. Chapter Three probes how the ‘journey of discovery’ in Barney’s The One Who Is Legion or A.D.’s After-Life (1930) unfolds in form of the protagonist’s quest for a genderless existence and in form of the text’s search for a new way of representing outside of any literary traditions. The novel seeks to overcome the reproduction of sameness – encapsulated in procreative heterosexuality – by exploring the potential of liminal states and spaces as grounds for difference. Chapter Four illustrates the significance of travel as an exceptionally productive concept, uniting aspects ranging from the skill of literary representation and the production of knowledge to female authorship, in newspaper articles and short stories published by Barnes between 1913 and 1930. By taking recourse to the language and logic of tourism many of her pieces pose questions about travelling and storytelling as ways of producing authentic representations about a place and its people. Geographical frameworks and spatial concepts proliferate in current approaches to literary modernist studies. The thesis contributes to this critical momentum by exploring a less considered line of inquiry: rather than examining the kind of knowledges a spatial concept like movement yields it probes how a number of female-authored texts playfully interrogate how moving across space is implicated in a process of knowing sexual otherness, as a male prerogative, in the early twentieth century.     John Boyle, Greg Curnoe and Joyce Wieland: Erotic Art and English Canadian Nationalism by Matthew Purvis A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Mediations Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Matthew Purvis i Abstract This dissertation concerns the relation between eroticism and nationalism in the work of a set of English Canadian artists in the mid-1960s-70s, namely John Boyle, Greg Curnoe, and Joyce Wieland. It contends that within their bodies of work there are ways of imagining nationalism and eroticism that are often formally or conceptually interrelated, either by strategy or figuration, and at times indistinguishable. This was evident in the content of their work, in the models that they established for interpreting it and present in more and less overt forms in some of the ways of imagining an English Canadian nationalism that surrounded them. The dissertation contextualizes the three artists in the terms of erotic art prevalent in the twentieth century and makes a case for them as part of a uniquely Canadian mode of decadence. Constructing my case largely from the published and unpublished writing of the three subjects and how these played against their reception, I have attempted to elaborate their artistic models and processes, as well as their understandings of eroticism and nationalism, situating them within the discourses on English Canadian nationalism and its potentially morbid prospects. Rather than treating this as a primarily cultural or socio-political issue, it is treated as both an epistemic and formal one.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Geneviève Pastre, one of France's leading lesbian theorists and political activists, was a respected French poet and academic in her fifties when she came out as a lesbian and made radical lesbian feminism the root of her political and literary work. A proficient student and teacher of the Greek and Latin classics, she became one of the first theorists to deconstruct the myths and archetypes of classical cultures from a feminist perspective. While her political writing has been ignored or denigrated by mainstream critics, Pastre has become a major influence within the French lesbian and gay movement. She became an advocate of lesbian autonomy and gay rights in her own work, and created her own publishing house to ensure that radical queer voices could be heard. In addition, she has worked to place gay and lesbian concerns on the French national agenda by helping to found the Parti des Mauves (Lavender Party). Geneviève Pastre was born on November 20, 1924, in Mainz, Germany. Growing up in the much-contested Franco-German province of Lorraine, she had a happy, if sheltered, childhood. As a child she planned to become a dancer, but gave in to parental pressure to give up her devotion to dance and concentrate on her studies of classical literature. She completed her higher education in Paris at the Sorbonne. After earning the highest qualification to teach in France, the agrégation, Pastre became a high school literature instructor, spent eight years in a loveless marriage, and had two daughters.

Built 1902-1903; architect, Bruce Price; builder, George Fuller Company. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 844, Lot 17. On May 14, 1985, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Bank of the Metropolis (Item No. 3). The hearing was continued to September 17, 1985 (Item No. 1). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Forty-two witnesses spoke in favor of designation. One witness took no position. The Commission received several letters in support of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary A limestone-faced bank and office tower, the Bank of the Metropolis, a columnar tripartite skyscraper, is a representative example of the major New York architect Bruce Price's neo­ Renaissance commercial architecture. The design incorporates classical elements which were traditionally associated with American bank architecture. Notable features include the bowed two-story portico with monumental polished granite columns, lions' heads, consoles, foliated spandrels and spandrels with open-mouthed lions. Built in 1902-1903, 1 the bank occupies a commanding corner location on Union Square West and demonstrates the arch~tect's ability to adapt a building to both the requirements of function and the dictates of site. Created to serve the needs of businesses on the square, the bank had members of the local business community on its board of directors.

During the two previous decades, although a substantial body of research had been carried out on language and gender, few of these studies had taken sexuality, or sexual orientation, as a criterion for analysis, and the vast ma­ jority assumed gender as an unproblematic category indexically linked to the sex of the speaker or writer. The small amount of research carried out on language and sexual orientation in the 1960s and 1970s tended to concentrate on the lexical level. During this pe­ riod, a number of gay glossaries and lexicons \Vere compiled, including Cory and LeRoy, ~A Lexicon of Homosexual Slang" (1963), Strait and Associates, The Lavender lexi,on: Dictionary cfGay Wonh and Phrase; (1964), Rodgers, The Queem' Vern.acular (1972), and Farrel, "The Argot of the Homosexual Subculture" (1972). Although most of these works spotlighted white gay male speech in the United States, a few, like Giallombardo's Society of Women: A Study of a WomanS Pri;on (1966), presented the language of lesbians, while others included terms from lan­ guages other than English, such as the tongue-in-check "Gay Girl's Guide to the ~It's a Girl.I" 4 INTRODUCTION ' U.S.
