After Ann Compton’s daughter, Laurie Ann, was murdered, her mother didn’t change a single thing in her daughter’s room and spent the next 10 years in hard grieving. Her despair was so deep and all- consuming that Compton was planning suicide. Fate intervened when she was invited to appear on a television program with American psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw. As she spoke about her loss, Dr. Phil offered an insight that changed Compton’s life: “Your daughter lived 18 vibrant and wonderful years, yet you’re focusing on the day of her death rather than celebrating the event of her life.” Recognizing the wisdom, Compton shed tears of relief saying, “I never thought of it that way before!” 2) Be real and be flexible. The first holiday after a loved one has died definitely will be different. You and your family should acknowledge and accept this but then be flexible about how you will celebrate. Bereavement authority Dr. Alan Wolfelt and author of Healing Your Holiday Grief: 100 Ideas For Blending Mourning And Celebration, offers these insights: “Because you’re in mourning this year, you may not feel like ‘doing’ the holidays at all. That’s an understandable thought. But your family’s holiday Affordable traditions are an important part of your shared history as well as your continuing lives. Remind yourself of these two realities: First, you’re grieving, and grieving is exhausting. Second, there are people in your life who want to be helpful. The holiday is an ideal time to ask for help. There’s nothing wrong with getting some assistance. Rachel Kodanaz, author of Living With Loss: One Day At A Time, notes: “Why is it so difficult to ask for help? The truth is people around you want to help so desperately. They would do anything to lessen the pain in your heart and the stress the loss has created. They ask you to call if you need anything, but you are reluctant

Entertainment About Town December brings bounteous gifts of , theater

By Joseph Cuniffe

Following is a look both forward and back to some of the most interesting Chicagoland music and theater: SYMPHONY CENTER: After 12 years, Daniel Barenboim, music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1991 through 2006, made a triumphant return to conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a magnificent performance of Smetana’s six symphonic poems Ma Vlast (My Country). The audience and orchestra both clearly loved having him back. Two nights later, Barenboim conducted his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which brings Israeli, Palestinian and other Arab musicians to make music together. Cellist Kian Soltani and violist Miriam Manasherov were the passionate soloists in Richard Strauss’s “Don Quixote,” and the orchestra was terrific in an exciting Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5. Barenboim also spoke eloquently on a number of topics at the Chicago Humanities Festival. He said that Sir Georg Solti was “a great, great conductor, but an orchestra doesn’t get its ‘sound’ from just one conductor. Kubelik, Reiner and others were music directors, and those things add up.” CSO highlights in December include Handel’s Messiah Dec. 20 and 22, at 8 The Joffrey Ballet in Christopher Wheeldon’s The Nutracker. p.m.; Dec. 21 at 1:30 p.m.; and Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. Call 312-294- Photo by Cheryl Mann 3000. LYRIC OPERA’S Siegfried was a smash, with Sir Andrew Davis leading a Lyric Orchestra in Wagner’s thrilling score, and a stellar international cast led by Burkhard Fritz as Sigfried, Christine Goerke as Brunnhilde, Eric Owens as the Wanderer, Matthias Klink as Mime, and Samuel Youn as Alberich. Director David Poutney’s production, if not loved by everyone, is most thought-provoking. Verdi’s Il Trovatore sings out through Dec. 9, and Massenet’s enchanting Cendrillon (Cinderella) plays through Dec. 8, and then Jan. 11 and 17, plus a Jan. 20 matinee. Call 312-827-5600. CHICAGO OPERA THEATER made musical history with the first-ever Chicago professional production of Tchaikovsky’s last opera, Iolantha. With a libretto by the composer’s brother Modest, and directed by Scottish director Paul Curran, Iolantha featured an appealing cast led by Chicago soprano Katherine Weber and Russian bass Mikhail Svetlov. Russian-American conductor Lidia Yankovskaya, the only female music director of the top 50 opera companies in the U.S., skillfully led an orchestra of 42. For future events, visit chicagooperatheater.org. THE JOFFREY BALLET: Audiences cheered choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake, inspired by the paintings of Degas. Tchaikovsky’s music sounded marvelous as played by the Chicago Philharmonic, conducted by Scott Speck. The Joffrey will now perform Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in Wheeldon’s production inspired by Chicago’s 1893 World's Fair. Through Dec. 30, at the Auditorium Theater. Call 312-386-8905. Directed by Mark Halberstam, the cast is impeccable: To name just a few, Andrea San Miguel’s Olivia, Jennifer Latimore’s Viola, William Brown’s singing Feste, and Scott Parkinson’s hilarious Sir Andrew Aguecheek.
