5 Head Coach Todd Phillips Head Coach Todd Phillips enters his fourth year as the SLCC Men’s Basketball sideline general . Last year, Phillips led the Bruins to an amazing season earning the Region 18 and District I championship to punch a ticket to the National Junior College Ath- letic Association (NJCAA) Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan ., for the second consecutive year . Under the watchful eye of Coach Phillips, the Bru- ins turned in a remarkable 27-7 overall record and finished 11-4 in the always tight Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings . Earning the second seed for the Region 18 Tournament, SLCC rolled their way to the championship by defeating top seeded College of Southern Idaho 62-49 .The Bruins earned the District I championship after hosting Mesa Com- munity College leading to the 75-59 win . Todd and the Bruin staff coached a pair of NJCAA The Phillips File All-Americans last year, with sophomore guard Gary Birthday: November 25 Payton II earning Second Team NJCAA All-American Hometown: High School: honors and physical center Neal Monson bringing College: Bachelor Degree - Lewis & Clark University, 1999 home Honorable Mention All-American nods . Payton II earned Co-Player of the year 2011-12 22-9 9-6/2nd 3rd -- as Monson and Jaden Jackson earned First Team All- 2012-13 29-5 14-1/1st 1st -- 2013-14 27 .7 11-4/2nd 1st 9th Region 18 . De’Sean Parson got a Second Team nod and Kurtis Toolson earned Honorable Mention . In three full seasons leading the program, Phillips and his staff have moved 17 players on to compete and study at four-year schools . Todd became head coach at SLCC after serving as an assistant coach on the Bruin staff under legendary Head Coach Norm Parrish who is now the Director of Basketball Opera- tions at the University of Utah . Before getting into the profession, Phillips played basketball in the SWAC at one of SLCC’s in-state ri- vals, Snow College . After graduating from Snow Col- lege, Phillips continued his playing career at Lewis and Clark State College from 1997-1999 . He received his bachelor’s degree in Education and Kinesiology, and earned a master’s degree in Education Adminis- tration from the University of Utah . He and his wife, Bobbi, are both originally from Boise, Idaho and have one daughter, Kinzi . 6 Assistant Coach Paul Marble

Assistant Coach Paul Marble enters his 11th season on the SLCC Men’s Basketball coaching staff for the 2014-15 year . Last season, Marble helped guide the Bruins to a fantastic season, with SLCC finishing the year with a 27-7 overall record. With that 27-7 record, Marble and the Bruins turned in an 11-4 mark in the hotly contested Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) . Placed as the second seed in the Region 18 tournament, SLCC won its second consecutive Region 18 championship and rolled to the District I championship to punch a ticket to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan ., as the No . 7 seed . In Paul’s time at SLCC, the Bruins have a remarkable overall record of 261-70 with a pair of NJCAA National Championship Game appearances including winning a National Championship in 2009 . In addition to coaching, Paul is a highly-revered academic advisor where he helped move four players from last year’s team on to compete and study at four-year institutions including NJCAA Second Team All-American II (now at ) and Honorable Mention All-American Neal Monson (now at University of California-Davis) . Marble began his basketball coaching career as an assistant to the late Lynn Archibald at the Univer- sity of Utah . He worked with the Utes from 1986-1989 and also coached for two years at the junior high school level with his team playing for the district championship in his first season. Paul earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah . When not coaching the Bruins, Coach Marble and his wife, Wendy, enjoy spending all the time they can with their family .

The “LAC” was dedicated in January 1996 by President Dr . Frank Budd . This building was built not only to give the Bruins a new home, but also to give the students at SLCC a state-of-the-art activity facility . The LAC houses the Health and Lifetime Ac- tivities Department and the Athletic Department. Personal Training and Health and Lifetime Activities programs are all a part of the LAC daily educational mission. Special features of the LAC include a 5,000 seat spe- cial events arena, multiple class and meeting rooms, large multi-purpose playing area, six glass wall racquetball courts, dance studio, full service free weight room and cardiovascular fitness center.

35 SLCC President Deneece Huftalin PhD

Dr . Deneece G . Huftalin now serves as the President of Salt Lake Community College and feels privileged to have served the students of Salt Lake Community College for more than two decades in various roles . Dr . Huftalin joined SLCC in 1992 as the Director of Academic and Career Advising and in 1994 was named Dean of Students . In addition to working with students, she has worked in collaboration with faculty to strengthen learning communities, the first year experience, learning out- comes and inclusivity initiatives on campus . Dr . Huftalin was named Vice President of Student Services in 2004 and served in that capacity until 2014 . In addition to her professional role, Dr . Huftalin is a faculty member for Leadershape, Inc . an interna- tional non-profit focused on student leadership development and teaches in the Education, Leadership and Policy program at the University of Utah . Dr . Huftalin serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the leading Student Affairs association . She cur- rently serves as a board member for the Utah YWCA and previously served on the Utah Arts Festival Board . Dr . Huftalin earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, a master’s degree in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles and a doctorate in Education, Leadership and Policy from the University of Utah .

Vice President of Student Services Nancy Singer PhD Nancy Singer has spent her entire professional career in higher edu- cation including the last three years at Salt Lake Community College . She currently services as Vice President of Student Services . Previous- ly, she served as Assistant Vice President, Student Planning & Support with responsibility for K-12 School Relations, TRiO programs, First Year Experience, Academic and Career Advising, Disability Resource Center, and Career and Student Employment Services . Before joining the SLCC staff, she was at the University of Arizona where she earned her Ph .D . in Higher Education Administration with a minor in Language, Reading and Culture . While at the University of Arizona, Nancy served as Director of the Tucson GEAR UP Project and Assistant Director of the SALT Center, a comprehensive support program for students with learning disabilities and attention challenges . Before moving to Arizona, Nancy worked in the community college system in California for sixteen years with responsibilities for student activities, orientation, school relations, tutoring and retention services . Nancy has a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Millikin University . Nancy’s professional affiliations include the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), the American Associa- tion of Community Colleges (AACC), and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) . 36 SLCC Athletic Staff Kevin Dustin enters his first year as the Athletic Director (AD) of SLCC Athletics where he replaces longtime AD Norma Carr . Officially beginning his duties as of July, 1 2014, Dustin steps into the position at a perfect time as all five SLCC athletic pro- grams are coming off highly successful seasons both on and off the field. Prior to coming to SLCC, Dustin served as the Assistant Di- rector with the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) . Holding that position for five years, he oversaw baseball, basket- Tanya Schmidt ball, football, golf, and theatre . He also served on Utah State Uni- Administrative Assistant versity’s staff for over 10 years, two years as an assistant men’s basketball coach, seven years as Associate Athletics Director of External Operations, and four years as Associate Ath- letics Director of Development . Dustin began his career as an English teacher and men’s basketball coach at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. Leading the Bobcats to the state championship in 1994, he was named the Utah 4A Coach of the Year . A native of Logan, Utah, Dustin graduated from Utah State University Lisa Peshell with his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1983 and his master’s AnneMarie Jensen Athletic Operations Marketing Director degree in education in 2000 . Married to wife Danene, they are the proud Coordinator parents of five grown children.
