Raleigh was as beguiled by Guiana’s landscape (“I never saw a more beautiful country...”) as he was by the prospect of plunder (“every stone we stooped to take up promised either gold or silver by his complexion”). Raleigh’s contemporaries, too, were doubly inspired, writing, as Thoreau says, of Guiana’s “majestic forests”, but also of its earth, “resplendent with gold.” By the eighteenth century, when the trade in Africans was in full swing, writers cared less for Guiana’s beauty than for its mineral wealth. Sugar was the poet’s muse, hence the epic work by James Grainger The Sugar Cane (1764), a poem which deals with subjects such as how best to manure the sugar cane plant, the most effective diet for the African slaves, worming techniques, etc. -

Groundings (2015) 2(2) : Page 25 What “Context” Can Justify Walter Rodney’s Assassination? Rohit Kanhai Rohit Kanhai is Editor of Caribbean Daylight, a New York-based Caribbean newspaper. Rohit Kanhai provided expert testimony at the Rodney Commission of Inquiry regarding the bomb apparatus that was used to assassinate Dr. Walter Rodney on 13 June 1980. Context! Context! Context! Like water crashing over the seawalls, there has been a rush of explanations, based on “context” to justify the shifting political sands, as it swirls with the waves. The “sands of time” seems to have shifted the “line in the sand” so much so, that all commonsense seems to have deserted the land of Guyana. In the midst of this debate are Walter Rodney and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA). -
Laboratory Study of the Nutrient Release Rate for Vinasse on Sandy
Vinasse is produced in large quantities as a by-product from bioethanol production. To ensure environmental sustainability, a beneficial use was sought. Previous study showed that short-term crops grown with vinasse-amended soil provided higher yield than crops treated with chemical NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer. To understand this phenomenon, this study sought to establish the nutrient release rates of vinasse in the agricultural soils of Guyana. Soils representative of the three most common and one futuristic agricultural land in Guyana were fertilized with vinasse, then watered as with normal course of plant growth of cash-crops for twelve weeks. The soil was sampled periodically, and the soil nutrients were determined. The nutrient availability from the application of vinasse as a soil amendment was greater for the clay soils than the sandy soil. EC was high while there was high availability of N,Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn during the 6- 12th week. There was no discernable trend for tiwiwid sand. In this laboratory study, high nutrient availability was observed in weeks 6-12 for the three clay soils studied. This period is the fruit and foliage growth phase for most short-term crops; hence, this suggests that vinasse is a good soil amendment for short-term crops in these soils. Vinasse did not improve the fertility of sandy soils; hence, it would be unsuitable as a fertilizer source in the Intermediate Savannahs of Guyana. Further studies should be done to fully determine the soil nutrient dynamics and the nutrient uptake. Limited LC/CAR/L.88 31 October 2006 Original: English GUYANA THE IMPACT ON SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS CAUSED BY THE DECEMBER 2005 – FEBRUARY 2006 FLOODING In collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation and Agriculture (IICA) ___________________ This document has been reproduced without formal editing i PREFACE This report was prepared at the request of the Government of Guyana following the rainfall from December 2005 until February 2006 and the subsequent flooding that affected, in particular, Regions 2 and 5. The implications of the flooding posed the need, beyond the immediate humanitarian response, for a rapid assessment of the damages (impacts of assets) and losses (effects on economic and social flows) to determine at the more general level the implications on macroeconomic and fiscal performance and the social and environmental consequences.1 More specifically, the document examines the effects of the impact for the sustainable livelihood of the affected households and provides possible strategic interventions serving as inputs for the development of programmes and projects to mitigate the impact of flooding on the affected population. The assessment was carried out following the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) disaster assessment methodology as elaborated in the Handbook for Estimating the Socio-economic and Environmental Effects of Disasters (ECLAC, 2004, www.eclac.cl/mexico). The results of the assessment were also interpreted within the context of a sustainable livelihood analysis (SLA) framework. The SLA framework combines the concept of sustainability understood as comprising of four elements (environmental, economic, social and institutional) with that of livelihoods which in turn refer to the capabilities, assets and activities required for a means of living. -

Guyana's Flood Disaster...The National Response
Introduction The natural disaster…and after Torrential rain, a deluge, an inundation of parts of the Coastland, in short - the country’s worst natural disaster, was the experience of Guyanese during the January- February period. The average amount of rainfall in Guyana for the month of January for the past 100 years is 7.3 inches. However, the country witnessed more than seven times that in January 2005 - some 52 inches. From December 24 through January 31 the total amount of rainfall exceeded 60 inches, with one night’s rainfall amounting to seven inches. This resulted in severe flooding and Government declaring Regions Three, Four and Five disaster areas. As the Administration planned its response, President Bharrat Jagdeo immediately called meetings of Cabinet Ministers, Leader of the Opposition Robert Corbin, Joint Service Heads and the City Council. Later he met with representatives of the Guyana Red Cross and members of religious organizations and non-governmental organizations. From these meetings with various stakeholders, committees, including members of the Opposition, were established in charge of water, food, shelter, health care and infrastructure, to assist affected people. Cabinet Ministers were dispatched to affected areas and provided periodic briefs to the Head of State. A committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon to coordinate assistance from overseas and the donor community, was also established. A Joint Operation Centre (JOC) was set up at Eve Leary and the relief efforts were coordinated through this entity, while the President’s Residence, State House was used as a resource centre. I have been intimately associated with Regulated bodies within the Caribbean in my capacity as a member/official of OOCUR, (ORGANISATION OF CARIBBEAN UTILITY REULATORS)—and regret to note that in the region, Governments have encountered problems with their approach to Utility Regulators. There are cases where bad relationships exist between the Regulators and Utility Companies, and in these small and fragile open economies there are always implications for social, economic and political developments within these countries. DOI: https://doi.org/10.16993/karib.39 RESEARCH ARTICLE Inherited “Ancestors’ Collections” of a Devoted Curator: The Museum of African Heritage in Georgetown, Guyana Jeremy Jacob Peretz University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), US [email protected] This essay traces the development of the Museum of African Heritage (MAH) in Guyana, which opened in 1994. The vision for the Museum, however, emerged over a decade earlier within contexts of decolonial cultural nationalist movements in the circum-Caribbean and African diasporic world at large. Exploring particular histories and contemporary functioning of this museum reveals insights into cultural politics of Guyana’s postcolonial nationalist formations, as well as into ways in which museums navigate their often- incongruous political and cultural roles in societies. Museum Director, Jenny Daly, has since the MAH’s inception been the main force behind this institution. Understanding this Museum’s past and current relationships to cultural-nationalist struggles is instruc- tive for historians of Caribbean politics, Africanist scholars, and museologists more generally. Noting how Daly describes her own professional and personal growth realized through relationships forged with artists, their works, and their various communities of engagement can be illuminating. Daly recalls how art served as an effective medium through which she began to engage meaningfully with aspects of her own ancestral heritages, recognizing a profound correspondence between her involvement with the arts and with local Guyanese iterations of African-derived religiosity.
