Remembering Molly Lamb Bobak 1920-2014

The death this month of Molly Lamb Bobak, nationally respected and celebrated Canadian visual artist, touches many of us in Fredericton. She settled here in 1960, and painted and drew daily until she was 84 when failing eyesight prevented her continuing. For decades Bobak was a charming, pertinent and unforgettable teacher of drawing, watercolours and oils in workshops throughout New Brunswick and further afield.

Molly Bobak embraced the outdoors, gathering fiddleheads and flowering weeds in season, and swimming in the St. John River from the Fredericton Green in summer. She said her greatest joy was people. She chose fleeting subjects: fresh-picked flowers; crowds celebrating or protesting; interiors touched by sunlight. Her expressive, accessible and totally unsentimental works, as different as possible from snapshots, seem to catch emotions and movement without impeding their flow. She was certainly a wonderful painter.

Bobak had the honour when she was young of being the first woman war artist to be appointed in Canada. Asked her opinion of war a few months before her death, she simply said it was disgusting. We are so lucky she chose to live in Fredericton.

1. Theatre UNB presents Trout Stanley by Claudia Dey March 12-15

On the day of their thirtieth birthday, twins Sugar and Grace Ducharme have their quiet lives in Tumbler Ridge, BC interrupted by the arrival of a stranger who goes by the name of Trout Stanley. Will he help end the death-day curse that has haunted them for ten years? Will he sever the bond of love that has linked the sisters from the womb? And might he be the murderer of the Scrabble Champ Stripper who disappeared a few days ago? Trout Stanley, one of the most celebrated Canadian plays of the last decade, is equal parts off-kilter dark comedy and poetic and touching meditation on love, loneliness, and how we all should take lessons from snails.

Trout Stanley is directed by senior Theatre UNB student Eric Iversen as a thesis production and stars Fonya Irvine, Kelsey Hines, and Tyler Trask. The play runs nightly at 8pm from March 12-15 at Memorial Hall, UNB.

Hear from workers affected by pay inequity in New Brunswick–childcare workers, home support workers, community residence (group home) workers and transition home workers. Workers in these sectors provide critical and compassionate care and in often stressful work environments. It’s long overdue that they receive Bread and Roses–fair wages and dignified working conditions. Let’s learn about their struggles and celebrate their work with food, drink and a night of swing dancing with Fredericton’s favourite, the Alex Bailey Swing Band.

6. Danielle Hogan and Carol Collicutt exhibitions open at Gallery 78 March 14

Danielle Hogan's art and life have taken her from New Brunswick to British Columbia and back again. After completing a diploma at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, Hogan went on to study at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver and the University of Victoria. From West to East, a Journey in Watercolour is an exploration of the Canadian landscape captured during Hogan's travels in British Columbia and New Brunswick as well as the journey by road from one province to the other as she made her way back home.

After several trips to Cuba, Carol Collicutt continues to be fascinated by the opulent, deteriorating, Spanish colonial architecture prevalent in the city. Her work typically addresses the themes of permanence/ impermanence, deterioration, decay, and the effects of time on landscape, objects and architecture. Using collage and mixed media techniques Collicutt's blurred lines and visual ambiguity in The Havana Series challenge the viewer to look beyond and between the layers to discover the climate, the culture and the people of this special place.

Both exhibitions begin March 14 and continue to April 6, 2014.

We welcome your visit at Gallery 78, 796 Queen St. (corner of Church and Queen), Fredericton Open: Tues to Fri 10am-5pm, Sat 10am-3pm, Sun 1-4pm or visit virtually at: www.gallery78.com

10. Celebrate World Water Day 2014 at UNB Art Centre

The UNB Art Centre invites you to celebrate World Water Day with a variety of special events.

ARTSnews March 13, 2014 7 Volume 15, Issue 10

World Water Day, held annually on March 22, is a United Nations initiative to recognize the value of water globally and to advocate for the sustainable management of water resources.

The public is invited to the opening of two special exhibits on March 14 at 5pm. Nova Scotia artist Wilma Needham brings her exhibit Souvenir to the UNB Art Centre from a recent showing at the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax, and St. Andrews artist Alanna Baird displays her solo exhibition Plenty of Fish for the first time in New Brunswick.

Souvenir provides multiple perspectives on Niagara Falls through a selection of photos, mixed media and new media. With a vertical drop of over 50 meters and the highest flow rate of any falls in the world, this awe inspiring natural wonder has given rise to a centuries old tourist industry that has shaped the artist’s experience of the falls. Wilma Needham who was born and raised in Niagara Falls, , engages the audience in the discussion about nature and culture through an examination of environmental, political and social issues that have played out around the falls.

Wilma Needham obtained her MFA from NSCAD University where she later taught in the Intermedia department, Media Arts Division, and served as administrator in Fine and Media Arts. Her studio work examines the ways that issues of the environment, equity, gender, and militarism shape our daily lives. With a foundation in printmaking and photography, her current studio practice spans a range of media. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and Europe.

Alanna Baird recycles coffee cans and salvages scrap metal to produce a fantastical school of fish for the exhibit, Plenty of Fish. Cod, char, bass and barracuda are only some of the fish you’ll be able to identify in the West Gallery’s aquatic zone. Alanna studied Engineering at UNB before turning to more artistic pursuits. She studied in the Clay Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and worked as a potter until she began crafting fish in 1991 in answer to a call for a weathervane competition at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Since then she has received numerous commissions, awards and exhibits for her unique fish sculptures.

Alanna was commissioned by the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller in 2008 to build a 17-foot Ichthyosaur where it is permanently displayed in the museum’s courtyard. In 2010 she held a solo exhibition at the Trinity Art Gallery at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Ottawa, exhibiting 50 fish in one space. In 2012 she was included in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s exhibit Whirligigs- Going with the Wind. In 2011, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre commissioned her to produce Sea Raven to commemorate the opening of the new Discovery Aquarium where it now resides outside the entrance of the building. In 2012 she was part of a trio of artists exhibiting artwork made from recycled materials in The Reclaimers at the Mary E. Black Gallery In Halifax. Most recently, she won First Place in the Kingsbrae Gardens 2013 Canadian National Sculpture Competition for Salmon Vortex.

Souvenir and Plenty of Fish will be on view from March 14 until May 2 at the UNB Art Centre.

The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9am - 4pm weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome!

11. The UNB Art Centre Celebrates World Water Day by Giving Back

The UNB Art Centre invites you to celebrate World Water Day 2014 with a variety of special events.

World Water Day held annually on March 22, is a United Nations initiative to recognize the value of water globally and to advocate for the sustainable management of water resources.

In conjunction with the exhibits Souvenir and Plenty of Fish, artists Wilma Needham and Alanna Baird have generously donated a print of their own work to the UNB Art Centre to help raise funds to support a water project in the developing world. This year, proceeds from this silent auction will go towards the purchase of Q-Drums from Kopernik, a not-for-profit organization that connects simple, life- changing technology with the people who need it most.

In rural areas women and children spend many hours of labour collecting water from sources that are often more than one kilometer away. The Q-Drum is a rollable water drum that has the capacity to contain 50 litres of water. Designed to ease this heavy burden, the Q- Drum saves time and helps prevent debilitating back and neck injuries caused by carrying heavy loads of water on their heads.

For more information on this innovative technology please visit http://kopernik.info/technology/q-drum-water-transporter.

Prints by artists Wilma Needham and Alanna Baird will be on view at the UNB Art Centre throughout the exhibitions Souvenir and Plenty of Fish running March 14-May 2. You are invited to place a bid on these works and assist in this humanitarian World Water Day project. You could take home an amazing souvenir!

Don’t forget to visit the UNB Art Centre to view the exhibits Souvenir and Plenty of Fish opening on March 14 at 5pm.

17. Monday Night Film Series presents Le Week-end March 17

March 17, 2014, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus

LE WEEK-END Director: Roger Michell United Kingdom, 2013 English 93 minutes Principal Cast: Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan, Jeff Goldblum

Numerous films of late have turned their attention to the romantic lives of older people, but many do so in an “isn’t that charming” manner that verges on the condescending. Bracing, prickly, and full of passion, Le Week-end, the new film from director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Hyde Park on Hudson), sheds the cozy comfort of retiree rom-coms for an altogether more interesting love story: the ups and downs of a romance 30 years in the making.

Meg (Lindsay Duncan; Under the Tuscan Sun) and Nick (Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent; Cloud Atlas) have been together forever. For their 30th wedding anniversary they’ve chosen to return to Paris, where they honeymooned. It’s not long before the City of Lights begins reflecting the couple’s conflicts right back at them.

Rejecting their first, depressingly beige, hotel for an impossibly expensive choice, Meg then begins rejecting her husband. (“Can I touch you?” he asks, tentatively. “What for?” she snaps.) When Meg and Nick run into their insufferably successful old friend, played with pure delight by Jeff Goldblum (The Big Chill, Jurassic Park), their squabbles rise to a register that’s both emotionally rich and very funny.

By turns sharply comic and deadly serious, Le Week-end is full of surprises. The dialogue has both the heart and the crackle of Richard Linklater’s Before… series, delving deep into the tensions that shape this couple’s relationship while holding nothing back. 20. W. C. Desmond Pacey Memorial Lecture Titanic, Myth, and Memory March 19

The 2013-14 Lecture will be held at UNB Fredericton at 5:30pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in the Alfred G. Bailey Auditorium, Tilley Hall 102. Titanic, Myth, and Memory will be presented by Dr. Leon Litvack, Professor Victorian Studies at Queen’s University, Belfast.

This illustrated lecture will consider why Titanic has been the source of universal interest, as an object to be memorialised and mythologised, as a telling example of hubris and nemesis, as a vehicle for cultural expression, as a source of economic regeneration, and even as a physical structure to be replicated, as both an oceangoing liner, and a floating theme park. Everyone seems to want a ‘piece’ of Titanic – whether it be a physical object associated with the ship, or some other tangible way in which Titanic can be experienced, so that it ‘means’ something to people completely dissociated from the events of 1912. The lecture will also treat some of the ethical considerations involved in the choices individuals and communities made in their approaches to myth and memory, and will make observations on how these relate to our ideas about culture, identity, history, exclusivity, inclusivity, technology, and education.

Hosted by the faculty of arts on both UNB campuses, the W.C. Desmond Pacey Memorial Lecture is presented by leading figures in humanities and social sciences. It was established in 1981 to honour the late Desmond Pacey, a distinguished UNB professor and administrator who died in 1975.

This lecture is free and open to the public.

27. Charlotte Glencross work Red Rhythm donated to Charlotte Street Arts Centre

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC) is proud to announce that a stunning artwork, entitled Red Rhythm by the late artist Charlotte Glencross, is now on permanent display at the centre. Graciously donated by Jon Thompson, the artwork is a wall piece created in 1986 that showcases Glencross’ characteristic exuberant style of hand-dyed yarns and monofilament woven into sculptural form.

Thompson’s donation and the installation of this artwork at the centre follows last year’s retrospective of Glencross’ work at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, The Fabric of Her Life, where a similar piece, Blue Waves, was displayed. Red Rhythm has found a natural new home at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre as the centre itself represents a culmination of arts advocacy and community work that Glencross saw to fruition and left as one of her many legacies to Fredericton.

“Red Rhythm illuminates the whole hallway in such an organic way. It looks like it was meant to be there. We are so honoured to have Charlotte's work grace the walls, and so thankful to Jon Thompson for his generosity,” says Lesandra Dodson, director of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Red Rhythm can be viewed on the second floor of the CSAC, in the hallway leading to the Auditorium. This space, designated for works in the permanent collection of the centre, is newly inaugurated with the installation of Glencross’ work. The centre wishes to also thank Vita Plume, curator of The Fabric of Her Life, for her support in the acquisition.

Centre hours are from 9am-10pm daily. The public is welcome to visit the centre during open hours to view the new installation.
