• The UN is actually many different entities developed since 1945

• UNOSAT supports offices and specialized agencies focused on disaster response, humanitarian operations, security, human rights, development, and preserving cultural heritage

• A sprawling, global system

• IT and geospatial unfortunately often sequestered and ‘last in line’

• UNOSAT therefore has evolved to be very nimble and “request based” UNOSAT Rapid Mapping Partners and Requests

• UNHCR – Violence in DR Congo results in refugees in neighboring countries, settlements need to be rapidly developed and landcover mapping and hydrological assessments needed

• UN OCHA – Conflict in South Sudan has made access to large areas difficult; review of thousands of square kilometres of imagery helps mission planning

• OHCHR – Myanmar violence needs to be mapped, assessed, and monitored

• UNHCR / UN OCHA / UNICEF / Special Envoy – Syrian conflict requires frequent assessments of displaced persons and refugees, security issues, damage, and more.

Altar of Baal Shamin Background: reviewed imagery collected on February 2013 over and opposition-held area north of Northern the town of Aleppo and Peristyle identified the location of Court checkpoints and roadblocks.

Southern Peristyle Court Myanmar Analysis – MODIS / VIIRS Fire Detections

Location: Rakhine State, Myanmar

Background: with the use of fire detection data derived from environment monitoring satellites, UNOSAT identified the existence of fires that were affecting towns and villages. Analysis of the historical data also confirmed that the source of the fires is probably not natural or related with agriculture.

Southern Peristyle Court 15 16 Assess changes in the land cover / use

Geotagged photos collected on the site on 12 and 13 January 2017 support UNOSAT satellite based analysis. Plowed agricultural fields and the new canals built most recently were identified during the field visit to the SLC site. 17 Potentially drought areas in the Highlands (Papua New Guinea) using MODIS satellite data
