The process emphasized the need to implement positive synergies across these fields and to experiment models of collaboration, which due to the distinctive features of the Valtellina valley hinge on an appropriate development of cultural tourism. The cultural landscape of the Valtellina terraced area was identified as the first asset from which to begin to develop a quality tourism policy. The idea is to create a walking and cycling route called ‘Via dei Terrazzamenti’ (The Route of Terraces), linking existing routes and paths (thus minimizing environmental impact) and allowing tourists to visit the terraced landscape. This has resulted in the local community acquiring a greater awareness of its territory and offering tourists an interesting cognitive experience. Quaderni Valtellinesi (The Valtellina Papers) is an Italian quarterly covering a wide range of topics: history, architecture, urbanism, art, religion, politics, travel accounts and reviews, relating to – as the title indicates – the Valtellina Valley. Issued on a regular basis since 1981, the publication (http://www.quadernivaltellinesi.it/) aims to promote the Alpine identity, considered a defining element for the local social community. Under the slogan ‘Local Culture and the World’, it endorses local culture as the key to confronting the world and the new challenges set by modern society. Situated in northern Italy, next to the Swiss border, the Valtellina Valley (Italian Valtellina, Lombard Valtulina, German Veltlin, Romansh Vuclina) is the upper valley of the Adda river, from its sources in the Ortles Mountains to lake Como. Enclosed by the Bernina Alps (north), the Ortles Mountains (northeast) and the Orobie Alps (south), the valley is traversed by several roads crossing Alpine passes. Historically, because of this strategic location, it was often a disputed territory until it finally became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1859. Inhabited by an Italian–speaking Roman Catholic population, the valley is today known for its wines, cheeses, hot springs and skiing. The main towns of the valley are Sondrio, Tirano, Chiavenna, Morbegno and Bormio, all five represented on the editorial board of the Quaderni Valtellinesi. The quarterly is divided into several richly illustrated sections. The opening editorial is followed by a section entitled ‘A Culture for Living’ (Una cultura per vivere), then by ‘From Valtellina and its Surroundings’ (Della Valtellina e contadi), the largest section of the publication; ‘And still, it moves’ (Epur si muove) comes next, before the final reviews section.

    The Geography of Italian Pasta David Alexander University of Massachusetts, Amherst Pasta is as much an institution as a food in Italy, where it has made a significant contribution to national culture. Its historical geography is one of strong regional variations based on climate, social factors, and diffusion patterns. These are considered herein; a taxonomy of pasta types is presented and illustrated in a series of maps that show regional variations. The classification scheme divides pasta into eight classes based on morphology and, where appropriate, filling. These include the spaghetti and tubular families, pasta shells, ribbon forms, short pasta, very small or “micro- pasta” types, the ravioli family of filled pasta, and the dumpling family, which includes gnocchi. Three patterns of dif- fusion of pasta types are identified: by sea, usually from the Mezzogiorno and Sicily, locally through adjacent regions, and outwards from the main centers of adoption. Many dry pasta forms are native to the south and center of Italy, while filled pasta of the ravioli family predominates north of the Apennines. The wines of Rainoldi pay homage to their ancestors through the terracing and carrying on the local viticultural tradition. A range of wines that glorify and honor the local culture, yet strives to innovate and improve, to diversify and offer a selection of high quality wines. The winery was founded by Giuseppe Rainoldi in 1925, in the suburb of Casacce, near Chiuro in Valtellina, and was named after Giuseppe's son. Valtellina is a mountainous valley that stretches from East to West in Nothern Italy. It is the second largest area in the world for of Nebbiolo. Here, the vine variety Nebbiolo - locally called Chiavennasca - can offer scented, highly elegant and ageable wines. A B O U T T H E V I N E Y A R D This wine is a blend of Nebbiolo from many small properties at a range of altitudes from 250m to 650m above sea level, encompasing some of the lowest vineyards in Valtellina. W I N E P R O D U C T I O N Rainoldi strives to produce top quality wine that respects both family tradition, and the environment. Each parcel is harvested based on its altitude in order to maintain the right ripeness, and is vinified separately in a newly installed high-tech winemaking cellar. Valtellina, located in the Italian Alps of Lombardy, is extensively glaciated. Since 1925, terminal variations of the glaciers have been recorded. By analysing a significant sample of valley glaciers, we have recognized a rapid retreat of the termini which occurred between 1925 and the early 1970s. A period of advance followed, which stopped in the second half of the 1980s. The mean summer­ temperature fluctuations at the meteorological station of Sondrio at the centre of Valtellina, show that the period 1925-52 was very warm, and then the temperatures d ropped. T he most intense winter precipitation occurred in the period 1925-37. The behaviour of these glaciers is similar to that of other Alpine glaciers, although time of response may be different.
