2020 GRADUATION 01 Monash University was named after Sir John Monash (1865-1931), a distinguished engineer, lawyer and soldier who commanded the Australian forces in France in World War I. Later, as the first chairman of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, he took on the immense task of overseeing the development of the brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne from 1923 until 1931. As a scholar and a man of action he exemplified the University’s motto, Ancora Imparo, a saying attributed to Michelangelo that means “I am still learning”. The motto was adopted by the University after it was established by proclamation under an Act of the Parliament of Victoria on 30 May 1958. When teaching began at Clayton in 1961, the University consisted of the faculties of Arts, Economics and Politics, Engineering, Medicine, and Science, with an initial enrolment of 363 students. Today, Monash has more than 86,750 students – including more than SIR JOHN MONASH was a distinguished Australian who contributed to almost every 11,000 who study offshore – and more than 8,000 full-time-equivalent staff. Monash University is a richly diverse and multicultural community serving Indigenous and recent Australians together with students from more than 160 other countries: international students make up some 48 per cent of enrolments, and more than 11,000 course enrolments in programs that are increasingly being made available outside Australia, mainly in the Asia-Pacific Region.

02 MONASH UNIVERSITY 2020 GRADUATION 03 Today’s graduation ceremony may only be a brief moment in your life, but it undoubtedly represents one of your most significant accomplishments. It provides an opportunity for you to celebrate the successful conclusion of years of preparation and endeavour with your fellow members of the Monash community. But while your time as a student at Monash may be drawing to a close, your ongoing connection with us remains no less vital. A most important strength of this University is its wider community, and the range of opportunities for you to stay in touch with that community has never been broader. For many graduates, this is an opportunity to help ensure that the experience of Monash for the next generation of students is even more rewarding than their own. This could involve contributing to support more scholarships, to extend our teaching and learning programs or to increase the impact of our research. Others donate their time and enthusiasm by participating in our student mentoring programme or by sharing their knowledge and experience with the wider Monash community. And never forget that Monash University exists for the benefit of everyone. For decades it has fulfilled that purpose by educating and training new generations of professionals and leaders in evidence-based decision making and by undertaking world class research that has proven vital to improving the human condition.

It is my sincere hope that the qualification you receive today furthers your own endeavours to effect positive change in a world that faces severe challenges as well as great opportunities.

As a graduate of this University, you represent what a Monash education can make possible. For it is through your excellence, and your connection to Monash, that we as a university have forged a path to where we are now. Your individual effort is part of our own effort. Your success reflects, and builds upon, our own success. My sincerest congratulations for what you have achieved today, and I warmly welcome you to the family that is Monash University alumni.

Mr Simon McKeon AO Chancellor

04 MONASH UNIVERSITY 2020 GRADUATION 05 Your graduation from Monash University marks the culmination of years of dedication you have invested into your studies, and the invaluable support you have received in that time from your family, friends, teachers and classmates. This achievement deserves recognition and celebration. Whatever path you embark on after graduating, you continue to be an important member of the Monash community. I hope, too, that you remain committed to the values that Monash represents: excellence, enterprise, an international outlook and a commitment to social justice. With the world facing an increasingly complex series of environmental and economic challenges – as well as unprecedented social and technological change – the demand for those qualities that Monash exemplifies will only increase. We have already seen in 2020 the devastation caused by the Australian bushfires, and the catastrophic effects COVID-19 has had across the world. As Sir John Monash so famously remarked: “Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community”. As a graduate of Monash, you are well positioned to contribute real benefit to your local and international community. Monash is one of the most in-demand and innovative universities in the world. We are distinguished both in Australia and beyond for our excellence in education and research, as well as our global reach. We are recognised internationally for the positive impact we make in sustainability, technological innovation, economic and social development, health and global security. We are also consistently ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide. Upon graduating, you have joined a community of more than 410,000 Monash graduates across 160 countries, many of whom are now leaders in business and government, even as they continue to play an active and often vital role in the Monash community. Above all, I urge you to remember the Monash University motto: Ancora Imparo, which translates to “I am still learning”. Graduation marks the successful completion of a degree or diploma, but your education does not end there. Learning is lifelong; it will nourish and sustain you for all of your days after you leave Monash. I offer you my sincere congratulations and best wishes for the future.

Professor Margaret Gardner AC President and Vice-Chancellor
