Message from Rabbi Weinberger זמני שבת Shabbat Times 7:05, 7:35 "חומש Chazal refer to Sefer Bamidbar as הדלקת נרות Candle Lighting Yoma 68b), normally translated as) הפקודים" pm 7:46 & פלג מנחה וקבלת -Plag Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat 6:20 pm “The Book of Numbers”. The relevance of ,numbers to Sefer Bamidbar is readily apparent שבת ערב שבת Beis Medrash Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat– as the Sefer begins and ends with a census of 6:45 pm Bnei Yisrael. The Township of Teaneck has alerted us that a No Parking zone has been reinstated along the western side of Jefferson Street from Maitland Avenue through Ogden Avenue.

We recognize there is a great challenge in finding parking near shul. We implore everyone coming to CBY to be cognizant of where you are parking; obey all parking regulations & be courteous of the shul's neighbors & never block their driveways. Additionally, please remember to wear reflective materials & walk on the correct side of the street when walking to shul when it is dark.

A Message from CBY President, Dr. Steven Becker

As I write this on Wednesday, Rosh Chodesh Sivan, I am thinking how underrated this day is and how casually we go about our business. After all, the first day of Sivan is the day we arrived at Har Sinai!

Commenting on the passuk, Vayichan sham Yisrael negged hahar, Rashi notes the unusual use of the singular in the text and cites one of the most famous midrashim. Our forefathers arrived at Har Sinai Ki-ish echad Bilaiv echad- like one person, with one heart. For the first and only time they camped as one, with a unity of spirit and purpose that was different from any other stop that they made throughout the forty years in the wilderness.

With the current situation of our families and beloved brethren in Eretz Yisrael under constant attack, may we take these last few days of the Omer the final days of preparation for Matan Torah- to work together to try to restore that awesome feeling of unity that we experienced, perhaps only on this singular day in our entire history. May our achdut, tefillah, limud HaTorah and acts of chesed help bring peace and security to our people and our greatly cherished Holy Land.

This week we held the final meeting of the Board of Directors for the fiscal year. Thanks to our outgoing Directors who have completed their terms in office: Meyer Fertig, Adam Pfefer, Yael Sebbag, Aaron Shlagbaum, Ari Wartelsky, Dovid Weinstein, and Bnot Representative Sara Grinfeld. Their individual and collective contributions to enhancing our shuls safety, Talmud Torah, chesed and spirituality are greatly appreciated, and we look forward to their continued involvement and leadership. As we look ahead to the new term for our Board of Directors, I welcome the new Directors and wish them great hatzlacha as they assume their new roles as communal leaders and ambassadors. I encourage them to bring their passion to help our Kehillah grow and become a more welcoming and spiritually inspiring family.

During these exciting times for CBY I encourage all members to reach out to me, Elysia or other members of the Executive Committee about the many ways you can contribute to the future growth and well-being of Bnai Yeshurun. We are currently looking for volunteers to create a new photo directory for all members. A kehillah of our size is challenged by the simple fact that there are so many people we see frequently but cannot possibly remember their names. The planned directory will provide each of us, and especially Rabbi Schrier, a greater opportunity to get to better know each other and will foster a warmer, more welcoming community.

On behalf of our membership and our community I take this opportunity to thank all those who planned and arranged our truly awesome Shavuot Program- Elysia Stein, Rabbi Zahtz, Rabbi Weinberger, Rabbi Schachter, Yehoshua & Rivka Szafranski, and Steve Appelbaum. May the Torah we study over Shabbat and Yom Tov unite us together as one community and be as pleasant to Avinu Shebashamayim as when on Thursday the 2nd day of Sivan we agreed to accept the entire Torah with the famous Pasuk - The entire people responded together and said, "Everything that Hashem has spoken we will do!"

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Same’ach

CBY COVID Safety Protocols In our ongoing efforts to provide a safe makom Tefilla and Torah for our community the CBY Medical Committee continues to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine progress, & apply that to our policies & procedures. Please see below for our current guidelines. 1. Health: No one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 may attend any event at CBY. COVID-19 symptoms are: • Fever or chills • Fatigue • Sore throat • Cough • Muscle or body aches • Congestion or runny nose • Shortness of breath or • New headache • Nausea or vomiting difficulty breathing • New loss of taste or smell • Diarrhea

2. Masking: We are pleased to announce that we will be opening up the front section of the tent minyanim for mask optional, socially distanced seating for those who are 2 weeks post final vaccine dose. Masking remains required at all indoor minyanim & for those not fully vaccinated. Masks should cover both nose & mouth. Additionally, individuals who are at least 2 weeks past final dose of vaccine, serving as baal tefillah or baal koreh, whether indoors or outdoors, are not required to mask while serving in those roles. 3. Seating Plans: Sections have been designated that will allow for vaccinated people (two weeks post their final shot) to sit in close proximity, albeit while masked in all of our minyanim. No one should feel obligated, even if vaccinated, to sit in those sections, but if you are comfortable, please do. We ask any attendees who are not vaccinated to please continue to follow social distancing, leaving six feet between seats occupied by non-family members. There are blue stickers in the New Main sanctuary which indicate where people should sit to ensure a safe environment. In all other locations chairs are spaced appropriately; please do not move or add seats in these locations. 4. Ventilation & Duration: Efforts, including consultation with HVAC experts, have been made to ensure proper ventilation of the space. Masking, distancing, & ventilation reduce risk but do not eliminate it. Every individual who chooses to daven inside must be aware of this risk. We do suggest N95 masks for those individuals at increased risk as they are proven to be safer in most studies. 5. Avoid Crowding: While in shul, as well as while entering and exiting, congregants should maintain social distance. 6. Quarantine Guidelines: The Medical Committee is continually looking at COVID trends in our area, research related to vaccination, & CDC guidelines. With that in mind, please see below for the most recent update to our quarantine policies. • Those individuals who have received a COVID vaccine, beginning 2 weeks after the final dose of vaccine, will no longer need to quarantine due to exposure or travel (as long as they are asymptomatic). • Individuals who have previously tested positive for COVID will be exempt from quarantine due to exposure or travel (as long as they are asymptomatic) for up to 3 months from their positive diagnosis. • CBY will continue to require a 14-day quarantine for individuals following any known COVID exposure who does not meet the criteria identified in the above points. • CBY asks all individuals who do not meet the criteria identified above, to follow the Travel Guidelines from the State of NJ (available HERE) following return from travel outside the immediate area (NY, NJ, CT, DE, PA) which requires self-quarantine for 10 days after travel, or 7 days with confirmation of a negative PCR test on days 3-5. • Please note, any individual who is exhibiting symptoms of COVID, regardless if they have been vaccinated or previously tested positive for COVID, should remain home & consult their doctor. 7. COVID at CBY: In the event that a member or non-member tests positive, we will send out a communication to the entire shul with that information. We will not identify the member or non-member by name without their permission but will attempt to report where & when that person was at CBY. Each individual in that minyan should then reach out to their doctor to discuss their individual need for quarantine. We request that any person who attends CBY contact Elysia Stein ([email protected]) in a timely manner in the event that they test positive for COVID. We are trusting our members & other attendees to follow this practice. If you have any concerns related to a violation of this policy, please speak with the Gabbai of that minyan or please inform the shul office.

We take great pride in the leadership of the David Frohlich z”l Youth Department, who spear-headed this national campaign. They have organized and rallied over 30 Jewish institutions and organizations to participate with us in this drive. To date they collectively have raised almost $13,000. Kol HaKavod!

Virtual Youth Wing!

Bamidbar in “Hashtag” Form

• #BH, this week we will be starting the fourth book of the Torah, Sefer Bamidbar. #TYH #IntoTheWilderness #Journeys4 • In Bamidbar, we learn about the census: when Bnai Yisroel were counted, when the Leviim were counted, and when the firstborn were counted. #CountThemJews #MakeThemCount • One hidden mitzvah that we learn from this process is the mitzvah of Pidyon HaBen, when we redeem each firstborn male with five silver coins. #WouldYouRather #ChooseWisely. During the census, Moshe discovered that there were 273 more firstborn than Leviim, so each of those 273 had to be redeemed! #GoodCatch #JewishAccountantsMinalan • This week, we are also taught about how Bnai Yisroel camped in the desert, #One“S” #NoDoubles. We learn about the flags and banners assigned to each cohort and the positioning of each shevet, #WaveYourFlag. • Additionally, we learn about the process of breaking down, reassembling, and transporting the mishkan. #HaShemImachem #MikdashOnWheels #DiraBiTachtonim

A Mini-Vort From the Szafranski Table to Yours!

Rabbi Eliyahu Mizrachi, commenting on the famous Rashi (1:1) in the beginning of the parsha, notes that the sole reason for this week’s census was for HaShem to showcase His immense love for the Jewish people- there were absolutely no ulterior motives. Rav Hirsch (Shemos 30:12) elaborates on this, and explains that when we are counted, we are all unified under one idea, one mission statement. Through being counted, we become representatives of HaShem and His mission. How can you serve as HaShem’s representative today?

For additional mar’eih mekomot on this topic, please reach out to Yehoshua and Rivka Szafranski at [email protected].

Mommy & Me, this Shabbat is sponsored by Lily & Talia Hopkovitz, wishing a happy first birthday to their sister Aliza!
