Tom Askey Brings a Wealth of Goaltending Knowledge Back to the Buffalo Area Tom Askey brings a wealth of goaltending knowledge back to the Buffalo area. After spending his youth hockey years playing for Wheatfield Blades travel programs from Squirts all the way through Junior B, Tom earned a scholarship to The Ohio State University. Askey lettered all four years '92-'96 and was the starting goaltender from day one as a freshman and throughout his career at OSU. Tom enjoyed his best success as a senior, earning Second Team All-CCHA honors for the 1995-96 season. In 1993, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim selected Tom in the 8th round of the NHL Entry Draft. Askey would spend four seasons with the Anaheim organization after his college career. His dream of playing in the NHL would become a reality as he played with the Ducks during the '97-'98 season and again during the playoffs in '99. From 2000-05, Askey was a part of the Buffalo Sabers’ organization playing for the Rochester Americans. Tom was instrumental in aiding the development of the Sabers’ young goaltending prospects that included Mika Noronen and Ryan Miller. Tom also spent time overseas playing in the Finnish Elite League in 2005-06 for both Helsinki IFK and Jokerit. In addition, Askey played for Fribourgh of the Swiss A League during the playoffs in 2006. Tom would finish his career splitting the 2007-08 season between Italy and the UK playing for Alleghe HC and the Nottingham Panthers. Throughout his career, Tom has learned from some of the best goaltending coaches in the business. Growing up, he attended Mitch Korn's goalie schools and worked as an instructor for Mitch during college. At OSU, his goalie coach at was longtime NHLer Bill McKenzie. While with Anaheim, Askey had the privilege to work with legendary goalie coach Francois Allaire who was best known for guiding a young Patrick Roy in Montreal and JS Gigeure in Anaheim to Stanley Cup success. While in the Sabers’ system, Tom worked alongside longtime and current goalie guru Jim Corsi. After his playing career, Tom returned to his alma mater in '08-'09 and was a consultant to the Ohio State Hockey Program while finishing his degree in Sociology. That season, OSU earned a spot in the NCAA National Tournament. Last season, Tom returned to the college scene by accepting a position with Western Michigan University. That team also tasted success by winning the CCHA Playoff Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Over the years, Tom has successfully run his own goaltending clinics, schools, and private lessons. Tom spent the last three years as the organizational goalie coach for The Kalamazoo Optimist Hockey Association. He also worked with several high school and junior teams in the area. Tom has the knowledge and experience to help goaltenders at all ages and skill levels. Turnbull Hockey Pool for Each year, Turnbull students participate in several fundraising initiatives, which we promote as a way to develop a sense of community, leadership and social responsibility within the students. Last year's grade 7 and 8 students put forth a great deal of effort campaigning friends and family members to join Turnbull's annual NHL hockey pool, raising a total of $1750 for a charity of their choice (the United Way). This year's group has decided to run the hockey pool for the benefit of Help Lesotho, an international development organization working in the AIDS-ravaged country of Lesotho in southern Africa. From www.helplesotho.org "Help Lesotho’s programs foster hope and motivation in those who are most in need: orphans, vulnerable children, at-risk youth and grandmothers. Our work targets root causes and community priorities, including literacy, youth leadership training, school twinning, child sponsorship and gender programming. Help Lesotho is an effective, sustainable organization that is working at the grass-roots level to support the next generation of leaders in Lesotho." Your participation in this year's NHL hockey pool is very much appreciated. We believe it will provide students and their friends and families an opportunity to have fun together while giving back to their community by raising awareness and funds for a great cause. Prizes: > Grand Prize awarded to contestant whose team accumulates the most points over the regular NHL season = 10" Samsung Galaxy Tablet > Monthly Prizes awarded to the contestants whose teams accumulate the most points over each designated period (see website) = Two Movie Passes How it Works: > Everyone in the community is welcome to join in on the fun.

  • Goal Prevention 2004 a Review of Goaltending and Team Defense Including a Study of the Quality of ’
Goal Prevention 2004 a review of goaltending and team defense including a study of the quality of a hockey ’shots allowed Copyright Alan Ryder 2004 Goal Prevention 2004 Page 2 Introduction I recently completed an assessment of “”in the NHL for the 2002-03 “”season (http://www.HockeyAnalytics.com/Research.htm). That study revealed that the quality of shots allowed varied significantly from team to team and was not well correlated with the number of shots allowed on goal. The consequence of that study was an improved ability to assess the goal prevention performance of teams and their goaltenders. This paper applies the same methods to the analysis of the 2003-04 “”season, focusing more on the results than the method. Shot Quality In summary, the approach used to assess the quality of shots allowed by a team is: 1. Collect, from NHL game event logs, the relevant data on each shot. 2. Analyze the goal probabilities for each shooting circumstance. In my analysis I separated certain “”from “”shots and studied the probability of a goal given the shot type, the ’distance and the on-ice situation (power play vs other). 3. Build a model of goal probabilities that relies on the measured circumstance. 4. Apply the model to the shot data for the defensive team in question for the season. For each shot, determine its goal probability. 5. Determine Expected Goals: EG = the sum of the goal probabilities for each shot. 6. Neutralize the variation in the number of shots on goal by calculating Normalized Expected Goals (NEG) = EG x League Average Shots / Shots 7.
