Pierzynski, Antonio Tarver, Derrick Brooks and David Price are competing Thursday and Friday in the pro-am division of the PGA Tour’s 42nd Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. Pierzynski (Chicago White Sox): Talked about being a free-agent this offseason and which teams might be in the running to land the all-star catcher. Price (Tampa Bay Rays): Is leading the pro-am after the first round with a 12-under 60 that factors in his handicap and talked about being a finalist for the Cy Young Award. Tarver (former light-heavyweight champion of the world): Talked about his desire to keep fighting in hopes of winning another world title. Mauer (Minnesota Twins): The all-star talked about his offseason priorities, including staying healthy during the season and his upcoming wedding. Brooks (ex-Tampa Bay Bucs star): Talked about the heated race for this year’s NFL Rookie of the Year race and who he thinks will ultimately win the award. The star players are among a group of sports celebs competing in the season-ending event. Other celebs in the field include Tampa Bay Rays stars James Shields and Carlos Pena, former Green Bay Packers star Ryan Longwell, former Major League Baseball player Fred “Crime Dog” McGriff, Aaron Rowand (ex-Giants outfielder), former MLB All-Star Heathcliff Slocumb, and former Miami Dolphins WR Mark Duper. STATE of MINNESOTA WHEREAS: Joseph Patrick Mauer was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on April 19, 1983; and WHEREAS: Upon graduating from high school, Joe was selected by the Minnesota Twins as the number one overall pick in the first round of the 2001 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft; and WHEREAS: On April 5, 2004, Joe made his Major League debut at the Hubert H. Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers.
