26 London Road, Woolmer Green, Knebworth, SG3 6JP 01438 813 236 Welcome to Knebworth Recreation Ground…

This afternoon we welcome our good friends from Kimpton Rovers for a friendly after our county cup tie against Bedmond Sports & Social Club Reserves was cancelled, with the proposed visitors withdrawing and gifting us a place in the quarter finals.

I’d like to welcome chairman Sam Gibbs, his manager Dean Summerbee their players, staff, officials and supporters along with today’s referee David Murphy. We hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home.

In today’s edition of our programme you will find match reports from the most recent youth team games plus our senior sides along with their relevant tables.

Also today, the Non-League Paper column looks at some stories from the lighter side of the Non-League world and we look at the Herts Intermediate Cup, past and present.

We are also still looking for people to take on some small weekly or monthly tasks to share the burden of running your football club; an hour a week or a few hours each month. If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with Stuart.

We are also always looking for articles for the programme so if anyone has a burning desire to go into print let me know. Or a player who fancies getting their picture and profile in a future edition…………..

Please join us back at the pub after the game where food is generously laid on and live sports are shown on television – it’s just down the road and you’ll be warmly welcomed!

Enjoy the game!

John

Non-League Paper programme column by Steve Coney

In their infinite wisdom, The NLP’s bigwigs decided to give me a weekly column in the paper – with the pressurised title of It’s a Funny Old Game. The task: To scour Non-League football for the lighter side of football. Here are some of our favourites so far this season.

IT won’t be difficult to work out who ate all the pies at Glossop North End – the North West Counties have got their very own loyalty card. The North West Counties are rewarding their hungry fans at their Surrey Street home. Supporters will get a stamp each time they buy a pie. When they get ten stamps, they’ll get a free pie.

Altrincham duo Kyle Perry and Tom Marshall know their band Stubblemelt is getting bigger – even referees are asking them about it. “It’s the first thing managers ask me about now – ‘How’s the band going? I see they’re flying’,” Perry said. “Even a referee said to me, ‘Oh I watched your video the other day, it’s fantastic.’ “When it first started I really wanted to keep it a secret and keep it separate from football, but I can’t now!”

Evergreen striker Barry Hayles has often been a cut above the rest, but the Truro City man had to put the record straight over his absence from their game with Slough Town. It was first thought he cut his thumb while peeling an apple. In fact he had the nasty accident, which required stitches and meant he missed their Southern League clash, while drying up a sharp knife! “I showed the Truro physio and he said I should get to the hospital – unfortunately I couldn’t get back in time for the game! It was quite a bad one but I’m sure I’ll survive,” he said.

There was an amusing story in one of the many laugh out loud moments during the funeral of Gordon Cox, a councillor in Haverhill, Suffolk, who was heavily involved in local football. He had a mischievous sense of humour, perfectly illustrated by an anecdote from his refereeing days told by his son Stuart.

Taking charge of a match with a player known to frequently cause problems in games, he found the perfect way to keep him under control. After a foul was committed, he blew his whistle and called the player in question over to ask him if he’d like a red or a yellow.

The player, the tale goes, protested before again being asked whether he would like a red or a yellow. Reluctantly he went for yellow, whereupon Cox reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bag full of jelly babies – all yellow. The rest of the game passed without incident.

Boston United thought they had a bad night when they were walloped 7-2 by Oxford City – but for one angry betting punter it was even worse. He wrote to the Vanarama Conference North club furious they had cost him £90 and demanded the players chip in to refund him!

Cornard King’s Head played CFC Bury in the Suffolk Sunday Trophy recently. But they had a sat-nav nightmare before the game – they turned up at the secretary’s house! Their day got even worse after finding the right venue when they were hammered 15-3.

An eventful, enjoyable game where both teams may have thought they could have come away with all three points. For the Pumas a very good first half but for Elsenham a very good fightback and strong second half.

It was a makeshift line up where I had asked Gene to play a defensive midfield role which would hopefully allow Jack to get forward and help the attacks. Frankie came in on the right.

Elsenham had some early pressure but as the half went on Pumas got a better shape and more of a foot in the game. Kai went close hitting the inside of the post only for the ball to run along the line and then cleared, Lucas putting the cross back in just wide. Shortly after Gene hit the left hand post after some good work in the area.

At the other end Elsenham created a few chances of their own after some nice build up play but Tom V was comfortable in goal, handling well. Then Jack made a very good header which put in Dami to shoot home. Pumas 1-0 up.

Not long after from an Elsenham corner Dami played a great ball out of defence which Rudy chased before playing in Kai, finishing well. 2-0 Pumas.

With the central defence backing off, the Elsenham forward hit a hopeful shot that came off Charlie M, rolling into the area. Harrison who had momentarily stopped was out of position as the Elsenham forward dragged a slow shot past Tom V who had come off his line before rolling just inside of the post and in. 2-1 at half time.

Unfortunately it took us a while to get going on the second as the opposition were first to the ball, creating attack after attack. Tom V did well in goal to keep us ahead with the defence just about holding firm. We had a big slice of luck when a good shot from their attacker came down off the bar only for their player to head over.

The pressure finally told when ten minutes into the second half the Elsenham winger hit a bit of a wonder goal into the top left corner from out on the right hand side of the area. An excellent half volley which left Tom V no chance in goal. No real challenge on the shot though. 2-2.

The Pumas were struggling to get a foot in the game. Our challenges were half hearted at times with players not looking at the ball and preferring to barge when putting a foot in, being strong would of been the better option.

Elsenham took the lead with another good goal when a free kick was powerfully headed in past Tom V. 3-2 Elsenham. However the Pumas were not to be denied as Gene won a ball in the midfield and put in Dami who's shot didn't look as it was going to trouble their keeper only for him to elect to clear with feet rather than hold the ball and into the net the ball went. Unlucky keeper. 3-3.

With only a few minutes left Elsenham had some late pressure but the scores finished level.

Final Score - Elsenham Youth 3 Knebwouth Youth 3 (Dami 2, Kai) Match Report… First Team…

The game began at a frantic pace although both sides struggled on the heavy pitch. Inside ten minutes the hosts were forced into a change of personnel after Lewis Coward came off worse in a clash of heads, and Max Taylor (pictured) replaced him. Such was Taylor's impact he was awarded Raja Tandoori man of the match.

Sam Harte was presented with the first clear chance of the game on 25 minutes only to see his lofted shot go over the crossbar. And it was Harte again threatening five minutes later as he cut in and fired the ball narrowly over.

After a shaky opening 15 minutes of the second half, in which Dale Chester blocked Lawrence's shot and Adam Burnett made a fine stop from Janson, the Ks took control. Despite dominating possession and territory, chances were at a premium. After some neat build up play, Callum Rowe's shot from the edge of the box was blocked. Jordan Folorunso fired across the face of goal from a tight angle but nobody was there to turn the ball into the net. The best chance of the game fell to Jack Evans after 72 minutes as he muscled his way past his man but rolled the ball agonisingly wide of the target from 12 yards out.

Both sides will be pleased with a point after a tightly contested game but the Ks could so nearly have registered a win.

Match Report… Reserve Team…

The Reserves Cecil Hudson Cup dreams died in the Second Round last Saturday with a narrow 2-1 defeat away at Evergreen Reserves, despite an F&F Active man of the match performance from Jordan Borrie. Ruben Sanchez got the goal for the K’s. Time to concentrate on the league…….

Match Reports… Knebworth Youth Tigers…

Today saw Cougars Blues visit us for the first time. Looking at our respective league positions this was always going to be a close game and that proved to be the case.

Knebworth started the game well with some good passing that created numerous chances and eventually a ball out wide saw Harry Gentle get down the right and cross the ball for Thomas Hannan to finish.

Knebworth kept creating chances like this for the first 20 minutes and probably should have made more of them but eventually 23 minutes in Callum Evans was fouled on the right hand side of the box which he curled over the wall into the right hand side of the goal to make it 2-0.

During the opening 20 minutes Buntingford kept causing Knebworth problems and with 5 minutes left in the first half that was to tell with Buntingford scoring 3 goals in 5 minutes to take a 3-2 lead into half time.

Knebworth made some changes for the second half and this seemed to help as they pushed for an equaliser. Whilst not creating clear cut chances Knebworth did manage to keep Buntingford in their own half.

After some good work by William Oliver, we won a corner which Harry Gentle crossed in, it was a good cross hit with pace and enough height to cause Buntingford problems and an extended leg from a Buntingford player saw them concede an own goal to make it 3-3.

Their was one late chance for Knebworth which unfortunately didn't get converted so the scores remained tied. All in all a very enjoyable game played in good spirits.

John Boyle Computer Services Man-of-the-match: Thomas Hannan - scored a goal and played brilliantly in defence in the second half.

Final Score – Knebworth Tigers 3-3 Buntingford Cougars

Club History…

Knebworth Football Club was formed in 1901 as founder members of the North Herts League and were crowned champions on five occasions and won the county Junior Cup in 1912/13, before moving to the Herts County League in 1948.

A period of success came in the 1970s with a host of championships and cup wins, often under the influence of ex-Tottenham Hotspur player Johnny Brooks. Knebworth Football Club moved up the football ladder in 1983 to the South Midlands League, as well as to a new ground at Old Knebworth Lane. After five years the club returned to the North Herts League due to financial difficulties, winning three cups and a league title in two seasons, before going back to the Herts County League.

There is no evidence to suggest that the club ever had a youth section, and in 1977 Doug Dilley set up Knebworth Youth Football Club initially with just an U12 boys team. The club began to grow and quickly had teams at U9 and U10 for the following season. The club continued to grow and within 25 years there were boys and girls teams representing the club from Under 6 through to Under 17 and over 200 registered players.

Knebworth Football Club folded in 1995 when their ground at Old Knebworth Lane was sold as a health club. Four years later, Martyn Bond took his Knebworth Youth Football Club U18 side into senior football and re-formed Knebworth Football Club. After four successful years in the Hertford & District League the club were elected to the Herts Senior County League, achieving the FA's 'Charter Standard' award that same year and being crowned Herts FA 'Adult Club of the Year' in 2005.

Knebworth Youth Football Club first achieved the FA's 'Charter Standard' award in 2004 and went on to pick up the Herts FA 'Club of the Year' in this category in both 2006 and also 2008. Further hard work and continued development saw the club achieve the coveted FA 'Development Club' status.

In summer 2013, Knebworth Youth Football Club was incorporated into Knebworth Football Club.

Knebworth Old Boys Football Club formed in the late 1980s as a veterans team playing on Sunday mornings, and in May 2014 agreed to join the club to bring all Knebworth football under one banner.
