QUICK HITS

1) Kris Letang will be suiting up for his 692nd career game tonight. That will allow him to surpass good friend Marc-Andre Fleury for sole possession of eighth place on the Penguins’ all-time games played list.

2) Before being held scoreless in last year’s final meeting on March 20 (4-1 loss), Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had compiled a 13- game point streak against the Islanders (9G-14A-23PTS). Crosby has produced more career points (108) and goals (34) against the Islanders than any other team. Crosby’s next-highest point total against one team is 93 against the Flyers.

3) Evgeni Malkin has recorded at least one point in 13 of his past 17 games against the Islanders, netting 20 points (7G-13A).

4) Last year the Penguins led the NHL, and established a franchise record, by converting at a 26.2% clip on the man-advantage. Pittsburgh’s 26.2% success rate was the highest percentage by an NHL team over a complete non-lockout season since the 1989-90 Calgary Flames enjoyed a 27.7% conversion rate. This year, Pittsburgh is 7 for 24 (29.2%) on the power play through the first few weeks of the campaign.

5) This is Pittsburgh’s first Metropolitan Division game since the 7-6 overtime win against the Washington Capitals on opening night. Under Mike Sullivan the Pens own the best intra-division record among Metro clubs at 58-23-5. Pittsburgh has had the top Metro record in each of the past two seasons.

TEAM NOTES:

#PERFECTION The Penguins enjoyed a perfect 4-0 record on their 12-day trek through Toronto, Banff, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Pittsburgh outscored foes, 23-6 in those contests. The Pens swept the Western Canada portion of their schedule for the first time since Dec. 5-8, 2007. The Pens used a total team effort during their run, as 17 of the 20 skaters who dressed recorded at least one point; 10 of the 20 scored at least once; and eight players averaged a point per game.

STRONG START Pittsburgh enters tonight 6-1-2 through its first nine games. A victory tonight would allow the Pens to equal the fourth-best 10-game start in franchise history. Below are the previous four times the Penguins have earned 16 or more points within their first 20 games:

Year W L O/T PTS 1994-95 9 0 1 19 1992-93 8 0 2 18 2009-10 9 1 0 18 1986-87 8 2 0 16

This is currently the Pens’ best start since going 7-2-1 to begin their Stanley Cup title defense in 2016-17.

PROPS TO THE BACK END The Penguins are back to doing what they do best – scoring goals in bunches. More importantly, especially for the coaching staff, the Pens are playing better defense and receiving quality netminding. During the 4-0 road trip, Matt Murray and Casey DeSmith combined to post a 1.49 goals-against average, with each recording a shutout. Murray was 3-0 and stopped 117 of 123 shots in that span for a 1.98 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage. DeSmith turned away 29 shots on Oct. 27 at Vancouver to record his second career shutout.

CROSBY NAMED FIRST STAR Sidney Crosby was named NHL First Star for the week ending October 28 after leading all NHL players (tied) during that seven-day period in both goals (5) and points (7). Included in those totals were his overtime tally on October 23 in Edmonton that had the hockey community buzzing.

STREAK TO SEVEN Evgeni Malkin had another three-point effort on Saturday night in Vancouver – already his NHL-leading fourth such performance of the season. That ran his point streak to seven games (4G-11A-15PTS). According to the NHL Morning Skate, he is the first Penguins player to record at least 18 points through the first nine team games in a season since Mario Lemieux in 2002-03 (5G-15A-20PTS in 9 GP). Malkin leads the NHL with a 2.00 points-per-game average.

SULLY AND JIM EARN MILESTONE WINS Pittsburgh’s 5-0 victory in Vancouver on Oct. 27 earned head coach Mike Sullivan and GM Jim Rutherford milestone wins. Both moved into third place on their respective franchise wins list. They supplanted Michel Therrien and Baz Bastien, respectively.

700 CLUB The NHL Morning Skate noted that Penguins forward Phil Kessel became the ninth player in NHL history to play in 700-straight NHL games on Oct. 25 in Calgary. Kessel’s active iron man streak is the third-longest run among active players, trailing only Keith Yandle (724 games) and Patrick Marleau (717) heading into Monday’s games. In the final game of the Pens’ four-game road trip on Oct. 27 in Vancouver, Kessel dressed for his 255th-straight game with Pittsburgh, moving him past linemate Evgeni Malkin for the fifth-longest consecutive games played streak in club history.

BACKCHECKING THE PENS *Jamie Oleksiak is on the first three-game point streak (2G-2A-4PTS) of his NHL career. He had assists in each of his last two games, the first time in his NHL career he has had helpers in back-to-back contests. *Dominik Simon is on a career-high three-game assist streak (4 total). This run equals the longest point streak of his career. *The Penguins have skated to a 4-0-1 start on the road this year. This is the Penguins’ best road start since beginning the 2014-15 season on a 5-0-1 run on the road. *Two Penguins have recorded points in all five road games thus far: Evgeni Malkin (4G-7A-11PTS) and Sidney Crosby (5G-4A- 9PTS).
