The major issue was that of “Students and Democracy”, the program was in the form of a panel dis- cussion with panelists including: Maya John (ex-president, St. Stephens), Adtiya Dar (Kirori Mal College; and DUSU presiden- tial candidate in the last elections), Abhinav (Hindu College, CC) and Nayanjyoti (Secretary, Ramjas College). Dilip Simeon, former professor, history department, Ramjas College, also spoke on the occasion. The fi rst part of the discussion centered on the present election scenario and the basis on which they were contested. The Panelists felt that caste, religion and region were impor- tant factors on which the elections were contested. Money and muscle power used by organised political parties and the modes employed by them to exercise it were discussed at length. The manipulation of hostels as centers of power con- trol and identity creation of students on sectarian lines for use as vote banks was acknowledged. The panelists tried to analyse the current student electoral politics as only one form of politics. It was brought to the no- tice of all present there that students should be political, as they historically have been, for their development as human beings. It was also recognized that the university should be treated as a universe where students would get a chance to learn the tools of an independent and critical engagement with society. The effectiveness of student unions in raising issues, post elections, was taken into consideration. The problems arising because of the lack of dialogue with the administration and the measures to seek co-operation from them were ascertained. The caucus also questioned the re- sponsibilities of students. A need for the active participation in students’ and people’s movements like the RTI, NREGA, AFSPA, Bhopal Gas Tragedy, Narmada Valley, Manipur, etc was also re- alized. It is very well acknowledged that the power of a nation vests with the youth. Therefore, we should stand up for good and stand up against ills. This is our country and we shall not let it go the dogs. While there is time let us stand up for our- selves and for our people. A day of Seminar on Masculinities Celebration! very much in the game and quite ready to put on a show. I am sure everyone would have at least heard of the famous “Dam- dami Mai Ki Pooja”, I got to this observe this sacred event. Basically, every year on Valentine’s Day the residents of Hindu hostel choose a special lady to be the all powerful Dam- dami mata and worship her after enshrin- ing her at the V (virgin)-Tree! The cer- emony is initiated by the head-priest (the current Mr. Fresher) allegedly accompa- nied by an actual priest (however I was unsuccessful in spotting such a character at the site). It is believed that whoever at- tends the pooja and consumes the Prasad (there were ladoo’s this year. Yipee!), is sure to fi nd a partner of their choice in the next 6 months! If only all things were this mystical! So, at exactly 12 o clock the V-tree was crowded by Hinduites, all awaiting the goddess to appear when there we had it… Our Mr. Fresher appeared in all his glory holding a garish looking poster of Katrina Kaif, followed religiously by the hostlers who in a matter of minutes were at the beautifully festooned V-Tree put- ting the poster up for everyone’s view, stuck a garland around her neck out of reverence and left the place smelling good with some incents. Now, that left me dumbstruck. Soon the crowds dispersed and cou- ple of us stayed behind to register what we just saw happen, all while staring at the queer looking Katrina mata(No of- fence!), we gave in and walked along as well, thinking “ Oh well! That wasn’t too bad!” All in all, it was fun too watch. - Shivani Govind your Tuesday, February 20, 2007 b eat DU beat 7 7 It was I who Built Iraq... t 8:30 am IST, December 30, dam had consolidated power in a nation state by defaming the Head.
