The Moderate Voice Zack Kopplin 19 March 2013 Activists Re-Launch Campaign to Repeal Louisiana’s Creationism Law Since 2008, the Louisiana Science Education Act Has Been the Subject of National and International Criticism and Ridicule Baton Rouge, LA — (March, 18, 2013) — Senator Karen Carter Peterson (D-New Orleans) recently filed SB 26 to repeal the Louisiana Science Education Act, Louisiana’s misnamed and misguided creationism law. Since its passage in 2008, the Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA) has been the subject of national and international criticism and ridicule, and its repeal has been endorsed an overwhelming consensus of scientists and educators and a broad coalition of religious leaders and clergy. This is the Senator Peterson’s third attempt at repealing the act. Previous hearings about the Louisiana Science Education Act were the focus of intense national interest. Videos of the meetings have collectively received more than 680,000 views on YouTube and were covered by national publications including io9 and Slate. The campaign has been covered both nationally and internationally, including in The Guardian, The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, Italian Vogue, MSNBC, and Bill Moyers’s “Moyers and Company.” Originally conceived as the Louisiana Academic Freedom Act, the LSEA is based on a model statute developed by the Discovery Institute, a Seattle-based think tank that lobbies for legislation promoting creationism in the classroom. State Senator Ben Nevers, the bill’s original sponsor, explained that he filed the bill at the behest of the Louisiana Family Forum. “They (the Louisiana Family Forum) believe that scientific data related to creationism should be discussed when dealing with Darwin’s theory,” Senator Nevers said. -

(SAM) BERRY Christians in Science: Looking Back – and Forward Christians in Science had its origins in 1944 in a small gathering of mainly postgraduate students in Cambridge. This group became the nucleus of the Research Scientists’ Christian Fellowship (which changed its name in 1988 to Christians in Science). The RSCF was originally a graduate section of the Inter-Varsity Fellowship (now the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship), but is now an independent charity and limited company, albeit still retaining close links with UCCF. We review the seventy year history of CiS and its contributions to the maturing discussions in the faith-science area; we see a positive and developing role for the organisation. The early geologists produced evidence that the world was much older than the few thousand years then assumed, more powerful telescopes showed that the solar system was a very small part of an extensive galaxy, and grow- ing awareness of the plants and animals of the Americas and Australasia led to unsettling suggestions that there might have been several centres of creation. Shades of Denialism Lauren E. Cagle University of South Florida ~ [email protected] Carl Herndl University of South Florida ~ [email protected] Abstract Journalists and scholars have been writing about the phenomenon of climate denialism since the late 1990s. These exposés of climate denialism focus on how controversy has been manufactured by the oil, gas and coal industries and the think tanks and policy institutes they underwrite. In exposing these tactics, critics tend to portray climate deniers as a homogeneous group of ideologues, scoundrels and dupes. We argue that climate denialism or climate skepticism is a more nuanced cultural formation that has complex sources, ideological commitments, and rhetorical expressions. This argument follows recent analyses turning primarily to ideology, political affiliation, and personal values to explain denialism and skepticism in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence (McCright & Dunlap, 2011; Poortinga, Spence, Whitmarsh, Capstick, & Pidgeon, 2011; Whitmarsh, 2011). Using analyses primarily of online spaces, such as comments on news stories and discussion threads on the forum- based site Reddit, this paper will identify multiple shades of denialism and skepticism as they emerge in a variety of forums. We plot these variations on a theme on a map organized by the degree to which a position emerges form a scientific background and the strength of its skepticism. This paper argues that if we are to address the crucial problem of climate denialism, we need a better understanding of not only the political and economic, but also the rhetorical and social nuances of the problem. It explains the role of evolution as an organizing principle for all the historical sciences. Seven sections include: "Introduction" (the key role of evolution in the sciences); "How Do Good Standards Treat Biological Evolution?" (controversial versus consensual knowledge and why students should learn about evolution); "Extrascientific Issues" (e.g., the diversity of anti-evolutionists, why anti-evolutionism persists, and how science standards reflect creationist pressures); "Evaluation of State Standards" (very good to excellent, good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory, useless or absent, and disgraceful); "Sample Standards"; "Further Analysis" (grades for science standards as a whole); and "Conclusions." Overall, 31 states do at least a satisfactory job of handling the central organizing principle of the historical sciences, 10 states do an excellent or very good job of presenting evolution, and 21 states do a good or satisfactory job. More than one-third of states do not do a satisfactory job. -

What Is at Stake in Democratizing Knowledge?
Forthcoming in Foundations of Science Identifying Difference, Engaging Dissent: What is at Stake in Democratizing Knowledge? Loren King1, Brandon MorganOlsen2, and James Wong3 Abstract Several prominent voices have called for a democratization of science through deliberative processes that include a diverse range of perspectives and values. We bring these scholars into conversation with extant research on democratic deliberation in political theory and the social sciences. In doing so, we identify systematic barriers to the effectiveness of inclusive deliberation in both scientific and political settings. We are particularly interested in what we call misidentified dissent, where deliberations are starkly framed at the outset in terms of dissenting positions without properly distinguishing the kinds of difference and disagreement motivating dissent. The creation of cognitive democracy, of democratic science, is as much a matter of conflict and hope as is the creation of political democracy. Helen Longino, “Subjects, Power and Knowledge” 1.
