SPOTLIGHT ON FOST VOLUNTEER – Neil Hedges

Who are you and what role do you play as a volunteer? I am the Volunteer Coordinator. I am responsible for communicating with volunteers and also new volunteer recruitment, and keeping up to date volunteer records including records of volunteer training attendance.

Why are you here? Although I was born on the mainland, my entire family before me were all Island born and raised.

I can first remember coming to Shanklin Theatre with my parents when I was around 8 years old. When I moved to the Island in 2016 and found out about FOST saving the Theatre, I wanted to get involved and do my bit to preserve our wonderful old Theatre.

Why do you stay here? As well as being rewarding work, I have met so many good people and it is good to socialise with the many and varied people who so generously give their time to the Theatre.

Where is your Wight heaven? My home in Wroxall with some wonderful countryside views. There is nothing like sitting on my decking on a warm summer’s evening and watching the sun go down over the fields.

Favourite town? Shanklin. Favourite Beach? Shanklin, having had some very memorable holidays in Shanklin in my youth with great times on the beach on warm summer days. Favourite beauty spot? Godshill and I also love Osborne House.

Favourite pub/restaurant /cafe? The Pointer in Newchurch and also the White Lion in Arreton.

Cruising with the Osmonds – By Linda Stoneham

In the first week of September 2018, Jill Gontar and I had a cruise with the Osmond brothers, Merrill and Jay. As you can see, we both had T-shirts made to help promote Shanklin Theatre and their forthcoming show; ‘The Osmonds’ Rockin' Christmas with Merrill & Jay’ on the 15th December.

The cruise was a very enjoyable experience - we were with a group of around one hundred other Osmond fans in which we enjoyed a lovely welcome from the brothers and their wives. Jill and I really got into the spirit of things and took part in a game show questions & answers session. We also really enjoyed a Karaoke session in which we were delighted to join Merrill in singing their 1974 hit; ‘Love Me for a Reason’, we probably weren’t very good, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves all the same. We also enjoyed the three concerts during our week; ‘The Osmonds UK Fan Cruise’ on board the P&O Cruise Ship; Azura.

Linda Stoneham & Jill Gontar

The Osmonds have been performing for over 60 years, and continue to perform shows all over the world. I can recommend that the Shanklin Christmas Show will be well worth seeing – so come on everyone and buy those tickets to see their wonderful Christmas show!

The Friends attend the 2018 Leaflet Exchange Day at Isle of Wight Pearl

The Isle of Wight is open for business during the winter — that was the message from tourism firms at an expo. Held at Isle of Wight Pearl on Friday 2nd November, the leaflet exchange was attended by around 35 businesses keen to promote the Island's winter tourism offer.

Representatives from Island attractions, events and activity companies including representatives from the Shanklin Hotel & Accommodation Association (SHAA), shared their leaflets with Island businesses and accommodation providers, for them to pass on to their guests. The Isle of Wight benefits from tourism in the summer months and, throughout the winter months, many businesses are affected by low trade as the Isle of Wight is deemed to be ‘closed’ for winter. ‘We want to shout about all the businesses that are open all year round.’ Above: FOST Chairman-Janet Wardle, Vice Chairman-Michael Beston & Membership Secretary-Jacqui Robertson.

Spotlight on Theatre Patron – Joe Pasquale

Joe Pasquale burst on to our TV screens 30 years ago on ITV’s New Faces. In 1999, he made his theatrical debut in Larry Shue’s ‘The Nerd’ which prompted Time Out to describe his performance as “rib- shatteringly funny” and went on to appear in the touring productions of Tom Stoppard’s ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’ in 2004; Mel Brooks’s ‘The Producers’ in 2007; ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in 2010 and ‘Doctor in the House’ with Robert Powell in 2012; Added to this, Joe was crowned King of the Jungle in ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ in 2004; starred in ITV’s ‘’ and has appeared on six ‘Royal Variety Performances’ and become a mainstay of the British Pantomime season with sold out performances each and every Christmas!

Since winning ‘I’m A Celebrity’, time has not stood still for Joe Pasquale, one of the hardest working and top-selling live comedians in British comedy today. Joe followed his ‘I’m A Celebrity’ win by hosting his own ITV special ‘An Audience with Joe Pasquale’, which enjoyed ratings in excess of nine million viewers! Joe also went on to host the long-running television series ‘The Price Is Right’ for ITV and at various times guest hosted the ‘Paul O’Grady Show’ for .

Over the years Joe has released many videos and DVDs from his live tours including the 1996 £1,000,000 seller ‘Live and Squeaky’ which earned him a Platinum Retail Performance award from The British Video Association – a feat which was repeated in 2005 with ‘Does He Really Talk Like That?’ The Live Show.

Having recently qualified as a pilot and taken up boxing and running, Joe has continued to enhance his ‘action man’ credentials by competing in a celebrity edition of ‘’ against the likes of Fatima Whitbread and Sally Gunnell; attempted to smash the ‘most amount of martial arts

In 2013 Joe took part in ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’, making it through to the 6th round and continued his packed schedule with his starring role playing King Arthur in the West End production of ‘’. This was then followed by a summer stand-up tour, before he then took on the role of Sherlock Holmes in the touring production ‘Ha Ha Holmes – The Hound of the Baskervilles’ in the autumn. And then finished up the year in December by starring in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at the Wolverhampton Grand.

2014 has seen Joe return again to the role of King Arthur in the West End, as well as taking part in the ITV ‘Live Dancing on Ice Tour’. 2015 kicked off with Joe returning to the role of King Arthur in the touring production of ‘Spamalot’ in the Spring and a UK stand-up tour in the Summer, followed by the Christmas pantomime ‘Aladdin’ at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton.

Other pantomime appearances during 2016-17 included the Orchard Theatre, Dartford in ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, 2017-18 at the Bristol Hippodrome in ‘Aladdin’

as Wishee Washee.

Joe’s 30th anniversary tour: ‘A Few of His Favourite Things’ was performed across the UK this year and ended in October. We were blessed and delighted to have Joe perform for us to a full and sold out theatre on the 29th August. After the show, Joe was delighted to have his picture taken with FOST member and avid Pasquale fans, Jan Jones and her son Charlie.

Jan went on to say; ‘Thank you so much to all the wonderful staff that help out with every show at the theatre!’ Charlie was so inspired after Joe’s show that he decided to become a FOST member and

Bucket Collection Report

August - £2284.33 - 16 shows

September - £1766.54 - 15 shows

October - £1091.01 - 15 shows

This summer had a great selection of shows, including the opera Carmen and the music of Debussy for classical lovers.

The fabulous Jane McDonald wowed a full house on her first visit to Shanklin Theatre and raised £226 for the bucket fund. Also, international singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading performed new music written for her 2018 solo tour, along with her classics from the past, and collected over £200 for the buckets.

Something for football fans: Three Arsenal Legends in Conversation entertained with stories from the “Beautiful Game”.

Return visits from Jimmy Osmond, Joe Pasquale, Ross Noble and Andy Fairweather Low among other artistes kept our volunteers busy throughout the summer.

Spotlight’s sell-out show Beyond the West End went to Wednesdays and Thursdays each week during September, producing more than £1250 for that month alone.

With the festive season on the way it’s time for our red Christmas jumpers and hats, to keep us all warm while we collect your bucket donations, especially during this year’s Spotlight pantomime - Sleeping Beauty.

Season’s greetings to everyone!

Alana Bird.
