SUMMER SCHOOL 2019 MARSHFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL OFFERINGS (FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 7-8, FALL 2019)

Online Registration: Registration for Middle School summer school courses will open on April 3 at 6am. There will be more information coming in our 3rd quarter newsletter. We will also be sending an email to alert you to the start date of online registration. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis.

JUNE SESSION - All courses held at Marshfield High School

1 WEEK COURSE OFFERINGS - Monday, July 1st –Wednesday, July 3rd

Hunter Safety – 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Mr. Eric Schwister Hunter safety focuses on educating hunters on reducing the potential for accidents and injuries, and to reduce the potential conflict between participants, landowners and other resource users. The course also promotes safe, responsible and ethical use of the environment and our resources. A $10.00 DNR Fee will be collected prior to the completion of the course. Room 10-11

3 WEEK COURSE OFFERINGS - Monday, June 17th – Friday, July 5th

Multimedia Art – 7:30 a.m.-9:45 a.m. – Ms. Tarrah Pagel In this course, you will create your own expressive art masterpieces in jewelry, handmade paper, printmaking techniques, fibers, metals and objects found in nature. You will learn how to combine metal and polymer clay with other media to create mixed-media works that are truly one-of-a-kind. Be ready to explore, create, and become a “Multimedia Maniac!” Room 38

Mud Stomp – Session # 1 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. – Ms. Kathy Drach Designed for young artists wanting to work with clay; usual clay techniques will be taught in this 3-week workshop. Work with pottery, hand building and wheel throwing techniques. Room 40

Photography – 9:45 a.m.-12:05 p.m. – Ms. Tarrah Pagel Get ready for some FUN with photography! Students will learn the basic rules for using digital cameras and capturing quality images. They will learn how to manipulate their photographs on Adobe Photoshop - including cropping, color enhancement, correct skin tone, artistic effects, adding works and images to pictures. Students can expect to explore the natural world around us by frequently going outside for photographic inspiration. Room 84

Drawing Studio – 7:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. or 9:50-12:05- Mr. William Geiger Whether you enjoy doodling in a notebook or drawing from life, this course will offer you an opportunity to express yourself using a variety of drawing media and techniques. Students will learn to push the limits of the materials and themselves, while exploring the work of professional artists. Room 39

St. Croix Fishing Rod Building - 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. – Mr. Pat Inda Build 4 of your own St. Croix fishing rods: two spinning rods, two ice rods, and 25 lead head jigs. All rod materials are St. Croix Products. Room 85

Theatre - 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. – Ms. Amanda Leurquin Ever wanted to be someone else? Do people tell you that you are a "performer"? Maybe you just want to put on a small one-act on stage, including a final performance! Drama class will improve your communication skills, build confidence, and make you a more skilled performer in this three-week course offering. Room 01

Makerspace App Design! (Open to 8th graders only) 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. – Mr. Charles Treankler Continue to explore the App Development Universe and create your own mobile applications and games using more advanced development platforms. In addition to app design fundamentals we will create a Makerspace environment throughout the week pursuing several creative and fun learning experiences that will serve as an introduction to the Computer Science classes available to students at the high school. No prior coding experience is necessary. Room 104

App Attack! (Open to incoming 7th graders only) 9:50 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. – Mr. Charles Treankler Explore the App Development Universe and create your own mobile applications and games! Using specialized app development tools, students will learn the basics of app design, and experience first-hand “A Day in the Life” of app design, development, and publication. We use apps every day, it’s time we create our own! No prior coding experience is necessary. Room 104

2 WEEK COURSE OFFERINGS – Monday, July 8th -Friday, July 19th

Fun in the Sun Outdoor Games - 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. – Ms. Becky Linzmeier This summer enjoy a variety of outdoor games that will include leisure and recreational activities. Games and activities may include Rahi-Ball, Frisbee golf, , , , pickle ball, , , lawn games (corn hole, ladder golf, spike ball, Kubb) and more. Enjoy meeting new people and learning some new games while having FUN! Appropriate clothes and shoes are required. No sandals or flip flops. Old Gym

Gateway Academy – 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. – Mr. Eric Schwister FUN is what you can expect from the Gateway Summer Academy. This course integrates collaborative problem solving activities to give students a chance to apply their imagination in and creativity to solve real world problems. This course focuses on applying Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics skills in a hands on way. Projects include building a water powered rocket, creating parts on Inventor (3d drawing software), constructing and designing a bridge, and many more! Learn more about the growing and exciting field of STEM in a fun and exciting way. This course is an excellent introduction to the Project Lead the Way Gateway courses offered at the middle school and engineering courses at the high school. Room B4 (basement)

Math Is Everywhere - 7:30-9:45 or 9:50-12:05 – Ms. Brandi Reed Students will solve problems, analyze data, and make models to explain their mathematical thinking. This course integrates proportional reasoning, probability, linear relationships, and the ability to question mathematical concepts. Activities such as creating a bridge with spaghetti that holds some weight in which students collect data and create a scatter plot, coin toss probability, questioning the Order of Operation, making a 3D fractal. Each day we will start with a Brain Question or short math game. Room 209

Painting Studio – 7:30 a.m.-9:45 a.m. or 9:50-12:05- Mr. William Geiger Students will explore the use of watercolor, acrylic, and tempera to study color and design in painting. Students are encouraged to create original artworks to define their ideas and style. Room 210

6 WEEK COURSE OFFERINGS – (All Held at Marshfield Middle School)

Monday, June 17h – Friday, July 26th (No School Wednesday, July 4th) Strength and Fitness – 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. - Mr. Pahl Students will concentrate on exercise and weight training, while developing a personal program of fitness with help of the instructor. This class will improve your strength, stamina, and prepare you for the upcoming season or improve one’s overall physical fitness. Effort and enthusiasm will be the norm for each session. Grade 8 Math – Pre-Algebra: 7:30a.m.-12:05p.m. – Ms. Brandi Reed Grade 8 Math/Pre-Algebra focuses on three critical areas: formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships, analyzing two- and three- dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence. Students will understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. Room 209
