That it is unfashionable is evident in the relative dearth of explicitly comparative studies published in anthropology over the past forty or so years. A few exceptions aside, the closest one usually comes is an edited volume in which each essay deals with a single society but an introductory essay by the editors hazards some broader comparative re marks. The reasons for such reticence seem clear: not only is it difficult for a single anthro pologist to acquire enough expertise in more than one society to make comparative remarks with any authority, it also goes against the grain of much contemporary anthropology to try to make data from diverse societies fit the analytic categories—any analytic categories— upon which comparison might be based. This fear of reductionism, which defines the peril in comparative work, is well-founded: the disrepute into which so much earlier anthropology has fallen stems in large part from the brazenly reductive manner in which cross-cultural comparisons were made. Even com- parativists as scrupulous and sophisticated as Boas and Levi-Strauss still seem to lose too much of what matters about the societies they study when they embark on comparisons of ritual, myth, or social organization. -

This research focused on eco-religion of indigenous Sundanese local community of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar at Southern Halimun Mountain on how to manage sustainable environment. The Kampong Cengkuk is one of several kampongs that still follow the tradition of indigenous local community of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar for hundred years. This descriptive qualitative research aims to reveal the internal and external factors led to deforestation of natural forests with average around 6-8% per year. The research shows that the kampong is still practicing eco-religion tradition by protecting forestland (leuweung tutupan) only for their subsistence. The hypothesis is that the social-culture changes had been occurred in the community not only to restrict outer island agriculture in the forest, but also, in wet rice cultivation activities, to manage sustainable environment. The reduction in process and ceremonial activities also happened, which was originally eight ceremonies of outer island agriculture rituals into five ceremonies of wet rice cultivation. Perumusan masalah penelitian ini, yaitu (1) Bagaimanakah transformasi mitos Dewi Sri dalam sastra?, (2) Bagaimanakah persebaran mitos Dewi Sri dalam masyarakat Jawa? dan (3) Bagaimanakah iimgsi mitos Dewi Sri dalam masyarakat Jawa? Tujuan penelitian ini, yaitu (1) Mengungkapkan transformasi mitos Dewi Sri dalam sastra, (2) Mengungkapkan persebaran mitos Dewi Sri dalam masyarakat Jawa, dan (3) Mengungkapkan fungsi mitos Dewi Sri dalam masyarakat Jawa. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu teori sastra lisan, teori filologi dan transformasi teks. Metode penelitian dalam penelitian ini meliputi beberapa bagian, yaitu (I) Iokasi dan sasaran penelitian, (2) pengumpulan data, dan (3) dokumentasi, yaitu pengumpulan, penggolongan dan penganalisisan. Di samping itu, penelitian ini juga menggunakan pendekatan etnografi. Dalam rangka analisis transformasi teks Dewi Sri digunakan prinsip intertekstualitas dan hipoglam (Riffaterre, 1978) dan Kristeva (Culler, 1977). Penelitian ini menghasilkan hal-hal sebagai berikut. Dalam masyarakat Jawa mitos Dewi Sri bertransformasi dalam wayang purwa lakon Sri Sadana dan Sri Mulih yang dipagelarkan dalam upacara bersih desa. Masyarakat Jawa sering menyebut lakon Sri Sadana dengan Mikukuhan (Mikukuhan Dewi Sri) dan lakon Sri Mulih disebut juga Sri Boyong atau Sri Mantuk Berdasarkan analisis hubungan intertekstualitas maka dapat diketahui bahwa lakon Sri Sadana sebagai teks transformasi secara signifikan teksnya menunjukkan kemiripan dengan hipogram 3 dan 4 yaitu Sera! Manfkmaya (Priyohutomo, 1952) dan Serat Manikmaya (B.97). -

It is conducted as an effort to unravel the existence of woman as indung or mother that has been influencing many aspects of life of Sundanese society. All those three actors have very dominant role both in social and internal aspect. The figure purpose of the research is to identify the process of value change in a series of time, particularly the change in their function caused by the particular circumstances during the past colonial era. The research employs descriptive-analytical methodology with qualitative approach, and focuses its analysis on process, event and authenticity. The findings of the research suggests that either the of Sunan Ambu, Dewi Sri or Ronggeng, have a multi-dimensional character: namely (1) as a woman who is responsible for human kind‟s life sustainability, (2) as a mother or indung, (3) as a protector and life-giver, the character of which are deeply embedded in those three figures. -

Margaret Chan Singapore Management University The Sinophone Roots of Javanese Nini Towong This article proposes that Nini Towong, a Javanese game involving a pos- sessed doll, is an involution of fifth-century Chinese spirit-basket divination. The investigation is less concerned with originist theories than it is a discus- sion of the Chinese in Indonesia. The Chinese have been in Southeast Asia from at least as early as the Ming era, yet Chinese contributions to Indonesian culture is an understudied area. The problem begins with the asymmetrical privileging of Indic over Sinic influences in early European scholarship, a sit- uation which in turn reveals the prejudices that the Europeans brought to bear in their dealings with the Chinese of Southeast Asia in the seventeenth to nineteenth century. Europeans introduced the Chinese-Jew analogy to the region. Their disdain contributed to indigenous hostility toward the Chinese. The Panji Story: From Version to Version *) by Triyono Bramantyo Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, Indonesia Introduction A monument that was erected during the reign of King Dyah Balitung of Central Java dating from approximately 907 CE (Ministry of Education and Culture 1983-1984, 2) provides the oldest written record of a wayang performance, which was based on the Mahabharata epic tale. The Ramayana was also an important source in the development of the performing arts in the early civilization of Java. The history of the Ramayana dates back to approximately the 5th-4th century BCE. It is believed that the original version of the story is Valmiki’s Ramayana. Some cultural evidence suggests that the Ramayana predates the Mahabharata. Regardless of which tale appeared first, these two important Indian literary works have been adapted to many forms in Javanese performing arts and in those of the rest of Southeast Asia: the Javanese Ramayana, the Javanese Mahabharata (in various forms of puppetry), the Balinese Ramayana, the Phra Lak Phra Lam of Laos, the Hikayat Seri Rama of Malaysia, the Ramakien of Thailand, the Yama Zatdaw of Myanmar, etc. Alongside the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, there is a local Javanese cycle called the Story of Panji, which, according to C.C. Berg’s work Inleiding tot de Studie van het Oud-Javaansch (1928), was disseminated in the year of Pamalayu (1277 CE). Purbatjaraka, an expert on the Panji cycles, writes: “[…] the writing of the early Panji story was during the supremacy of the Majapahit Kingdom” (Purbatjaraka 1968, 404). The Story of Panji subsequently spread throughout the Southeast Asian region, including present-day Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos, and has been adapted to a variety of performing arts. -

Jargon ini dicetuskan H. Endang Saifuddin Anshari, putra Isa Anshari (tokoh penting Masyumi). Kenapa jargon tersebut bisa muncul? Jakob Sumardjo dalam Paradoks Cerita-cerita Si Kabayan (2014) menerangkan hal itu dilandasi karakter masyarakat Sunda yang berbasis huma atau ladang. Dibanding kerajaan-kerajaan Jawa berbasis masyarakat sawah yang menetap, kebudayaan istana di kerajaan-kerajaan Sunda hanya berkembang di lingkungan terbatas masyarakat negara. Masyarakat negara adalah masyarakat Sunda di wilayah yang benar-benar dikuasai kerajaan secara langsung. Di luar wilayah kekuasaan kerajaan, masih terdapat kampung-kampung Sunda yang berpindah-pindah akibat hidup dari berladang. Hidup yang berpindah-pindah membuat ikatan istana dan rakyat di luar wilayah kekuasaan sangat longgar. Ini membuat ulama leluasa keluar-masuk kampung-kampung Sunda. Tidak mengherankan bila kenangan terhadap zaman kebudayaan Hindu amat tipis bagi kalangan masyarakat Sunda. Hal ini tercermin dalam mitos-mitos rakyat terhadap penyebar Islam seperti Kian Santang. “Mereka percaya bahwa agama Islam itu sudah sejak awal ada di Sunda. Sunda itu Islam,” tulis Sumardjo. As the story told, Sri Pohaci incarnated into nine plants. These plants are modified to nine consumptive plants, to support diversification of food consumption through the story of Sri Pohaci, intended for pre-school children. To preserve classic literature, Sri Pohaci tales need to be modified and packaged in a variety of media. The pre-design phase for this research applies qualitative methodology based on action research. The e-book application (app) design utilizes digital storytelling method, combined with touch-screen technology to enable interactive animated features. The concept of storytelling through narration, visual, audio and interactivity can increase the sensation of two-way interaction to encourage children’s comprehension and enjoyment of storybook. That is one of popular phrases among parents to persuade their children to finish their meal. These phrases are derived from local myths in agricultural community. The myth of Dewi Sri, Goddess of Paddy is told orally, generation to generation in these communities, spread across several regions in Indonesia. -

Ruang Publik dan Ritual Warga Kampung Kasepuhan Ciptagelar di Kabupaten Sukabumi-Jawa Barat Oleh: Nuryanto *) Abstrak Ruang antar bangunan dipahami sebagai area-area terbuka yang dapat diakses oleh masyarakat, dan biasanya terletak di antara bangunan-bangunan. Ruang antar bangunan dalam kajian ini menjadi menarik karena di dalamnya dapat terselenggara aktivtas bersifat publik dalam skala komunitas yang cukup terbatas. Sepintas lalu ruang antar bangunan adalah sebuah ruang publik yang dimiliki secara komunal oleh komunitas atau fasilitas negara yang diperuntukan untuk kepentingan publik. Namun kenyataan yang terjadi tidaklah demikian. Sebagian ruang-ruang antar bangunan yang ada adalah milik pribadi. Lapangan-lapangan yang biasa digunakan untuk olah raga, sebagian besar adalah milik pribadi yang belum dimanfaatkan lalu dibiarkan dimanfaatkan oleh publik hingga suatu saat ia memanfaatkannya, sehingga definisi ruang publik dalam hal ini bukan sekedar ruang untuk masyrakat publik, tapi juga diselenggarakan oleh masyarakat secara swadaya. Riset ini bersifat eksploratif dengan memanfaatkan pendekatan fenomenologis hermenitik dalam arsitektur dan etnografi. Sebagai kesimpulan umum, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fenomena ruang antar bangunan sebagai ruang terbuka publik masih dieksplorasi sebagai sebuah fenomena umum dari ruang terbuka. Ruang publik akan terlihat bermakna pada saat ada acara-acara adat tertentu (ritual adat), seperti: seren tahun, ngadegkeun imah, hajat sasih, dan lain-lain. Di luar acara-acara tersebut, maka ruang publik seakan telah kehilangan fungsinya secara jelas. Ruang publik hanya dimaknai sebagai ruang terbuka biasa untuk kegiatan sehari-hari warganya. Hasil riset memberikan kontribusi pada pengembangan riset tentang budaya lokal yang akan memperkaya pengajaran tentang arsitektur vernakular. Di bidang praksis, riset ini dapat dimanfaatkan dalam desain ruang publik kontemporer Sunda, seperti restoran, café, dan sebagainya.
