Intermediate Division, Rule Changes It’s hard to believe another show year has come to an end. The Western Horseman Stock Horse World Championship was outstanding! The level of competition in all divisions was top-notch. It is exciting to see how riders continue to improve with their . As we Stock Horse of Texas march into 2016, SHOT has a LOT of new information for our members. **Please read P. Several meetings took place and many on the committee sought the input of members Kim Lindsey as ideas were discussed. After multiple suggestions, proposals and tweaks, the SHOT Board Executive Secretary established the Intermediate division. Our division structure was originally developed to give riders a place to ride and be competitive, showing with riders of similar skill and ability. Eligibility restrictions in some divisions are designed to promote riders after achieving success in that division.

After talking to riders in all divisions, it appeared that there was a gap in experience and ability to be competitive when riders advanced out of the Novice and into the Limited Non Pro division. The Board looked at several ways to help riders transition out of the Novice. After multiple meetings, the Board voted to establish a new division that serves as a transition out of the Novice -- the new Intermediate division.

Rules and eligibility for the new Intermediate division are listed below. Riders currently in the Limited Non Pro who meet the eligibility requirements for Intermediate can move to that division.

However, Mother Nature failed to cooperate, and the show was postponed due to an early snow storm. By June 2001 the weather had improved, and SHOT descended on the historic ranch once again. Of course, I did realize at the time the number of things connected with this event which were significant in the growth of SHOT. The judge was Bill Smith of Spur. Bill, his wife Dana, and their son Billy breed the S Bar horses at the Spur Headquarters Ranch in Dickens County. The S Bar This one of a kind buckle was made horses have been well known in ranching circles for many years and have played and donated by silversmith and maker Troy West then of Center, Texas. a prominent role in SHOT and other ranch horse competitions. Bill won the first Ranch Horse Association of America (RHAA) in 1996 in Abilene on Josephs Gold. Joseph is the sire of Josephs Catchum All, owned and shown by Jimbo Humphreys and the recipient of the first Supreme Stock Horse Versatility Award. In addition Joseph sired Joseph Make a Mark, currently being ridden by Tyler Jacobs and my mare, Josephs Twistin’ Gin. A half-brother to Joseph, Crows TT (aka Yogi) was the 2004 SHOT All Around Champion with Glenn Hodges in the sad- dle. Since then Yogi has been shown by several members of the Jacobs clan. Another S Bar stallion, Ten O Sea, sired Judys Ten (aka Reno) the winner of the first SHOT Futurity ridden by Kris Wilson. Reno was later shown with much success by the late Zinn Lindsey. I doubt if it is news to any reader that Reno has won numerous AQHA world titles with his current rider, our Executive Director, Kim Lindsey. I can’t omit Zinn’s favorite horse which he bought the day he was branded, Ms Browns Hawkeye (aka Hawk). Before the event, an impromptu membership meeting took place in the parking lot of the Double H motel in Dickens. The discussion centered around a major change for SHOT. B.F. Yeates was the President and was proposing the idea of splitting the association into two divisions. For a time the competitions had been jackpotted, but there was no longer a level playing field for riders since amateurs were compet- ing against professional trainers. This new division would be called the Novice Division. The only difference between the Novice and Open Divi- sions would be the absence of a jackpot in the novice division; anyone who earned money riding horses would be ineligible. All of the events would be the same. Later when the current Novice Division was established this first Novice Division became the Non-Pro Division. I am explaining to Bill why Twister Mary Anne Truemper used bucked during the cow work. I told him several rolls of film taking pictures I should at least get a score of 75 for a successful saddle bronc ride. Bill said he that day.
