Economic Development and Regeneration Economic Development and Regeneration Quarterly Performance Review Quarter 2 1st July 2011 – 30th September 2011 Scrutiny Version - 1 - Executive Summary Area Arts & Leisure Albert Avenue Pools A team from Albert Avenue Pools won the Special Inter Office Ping Pong Tournament for businesses in Hull! Special thanks to Mitch Upfold, Shaun Marples and his Ping Team who kindly donated 2 Ping Pong tables to Albert Avenue Pools. The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification training course at Albert Avenue pools started in August, targeted at unemployed adults. The free course provides 30 hours of training and a leisure industry recognised qualification in life guarding which would be suitable for those looking to secure employment in the leisure industry. Beverley Road Baths The site has instigated a public lifesaving course on a Tuesday evening which is now underway and lasts for 12 weeks. 4 water based activity clubs have returned to the site to carry on long term bookings. Have played host to two successful swimming events for young children, in collaboration with the Youth Service and Community Play schemes – more events are planned for later in the year. We have been successful in obtaining a Sportivate bid with Hull University to fund more students to take part in swimming for fitness 75 students are expected to attend for 10 weeks Costello Stadium “Educ8” have confirmed a booking at Costello Stadium as from September 2011. The booking will see pupils, who cannot be taught in standard Education, attending the Stadium to attend their lessons under the guidance of staff from “Educ8”. Pupils attending will be referred from Hull Education. A maximum of 12 pupils will attend each day. The booking is initially for 4 days per week, 39 weeks per year. ‘Alive N Kicking’ is funded by the NHS and is a programme to help manage child obesity. On behalf of the City Councils Sports Development team Costello Stadium hosted the first “Street Games” festival the City has held on Wednesday 17 th August 2011. Youths aged 8 to 19 from across the City were invited to the free event to take part in a range of activities which included – skateboarding, golf, athletics, table tennis, basketball, cricket, football and rugby league to name but a few. 300 youths from across the City attended the day. Costello Stadium has hosted its annual Summer Holiday Play Scheme. This year’s scheme which runs between 10am and 3pm daily (Monday to Friday) has been led by coaches First Step Sports Ltd. Children attending have ranged from 8 to 15 years old with a wide range of sports, - 2 - dance and art/crafts activity sessions taking place. Children have also sampled Ice Skating at the Hull Arena. Costello Stadium will be hosting a Model Railway show on behalf of the Hull Miniature Railway Society. The event, which will attract exhibitors and spectators from across the North of England, will be open to the public on Saturday 12 th November 2011 and Sunday 13 th November between 10am and 5pm with 2000 visitors expected over the weekend. Saturday 19 th November 2011 see Costello Stadium host the annual Humberside Hounds Association Show. Approximately 200 hounds are expected to be shown on the day. The event takes place between 10am and 4.30pm East Hull Pools 29 th October – BP Young Leaders Programme Fundraiser. Event took place with a gold medallist swimmer attending event (Adam Whitehead). The Event gave opportunity for families to swim at a reduced rate with a professional swimmer and talk to him about training, diets and commitment etc. September and October – Hosted a private booking from Halliwick to deliver a course. The course is to teach clients with a (physical) disability to swim and to make them independent in water . The course was successful and has lead to another two bookings for 2012. Ennerdale Leisure Centre On Sunday 5 th June Ennerdale held the Hull & District Gala from attended by over 300 people. Hosted the Alan Ward Dance Competition on Sunday 4 th September, over 200 dancers participated and over 500 spectators attended. The event was a massive success and we hope to host 2 more events next year. Ennerdale hosted Futsal Open Day Sunday 25 th September 2011. The day was very well received by the organisers and we look forward to hosting more games from October onwards . Ennerdale hosted the Hull Open Gala on Sunday 2 nd October 2011 The Gala was an all day event with over 200 participants and 400 spectators. The Hull & District swimming Gala took place at Ennerdale on 16 th October 2011 with over 200 swimmers taking part in this competitive event. On 5 th & 6 th November 2011 Ennerdale hosted the York City Swimming Club Open Gala with over 100 swimmers participating each day. Theatre / Halls / Arena On the back of the successful professional boxing event which took place in Spring and the Indian Mela multi-cultural event which attracted over 2000 visitors, the promoter has now committed to securing three additional dates for the City Hall in 2012. June 2011 has seen a number of banqueted events taking place at City - 3 - Hall including wedding receptions, Hymers School Ball and the Armed Forces Dinner/Dance which all proved to be successful. There has also been some additional diversification in the programme to include new events such as the Harlem Gospel Choir and Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. The Kingston Junior Ice Hockey Clubs 5 th Annual Tournament took place at the Hull Arena on the 28 th & 29 th May, Teams from Solihull, Guildford, Whitley Bay, Bradford, Nottingham and Dundee took part. The Under 14 & Under 16 age groups attracted over 500 participants. Winmau World Darts Masters at the Arena on 1 st to 4 th September proved to be a success with 4 days live world-wide tv coverage through ESPN. Net bar and catering sales reached £35,706. Excellent feed- back was received from all the organisations resulting in a proposed return for next year at City Hall or Arena subject to agreement on terms and conditions. The opening night of Blood Brothers, at Hull New Theatre was a resounding success with excellent feed-back being received throughout the run. Hull New Theatre hosted Horrible Histories and has well exceeded expected target attendances with an additional performance being put on at short notice for the Saturday to meet customer demand. Pro Venue Box Office Ticketing System was successfully installed at the Arena during mid October. Specified Arena events will now be sold on this system on a phased in basis with a view to all events at Hull New Theatre and City Hall also being available for ticket purchases at the Arena in the New Year – this will result in an expanded service provision to customers. Specials Concert at the Arena took place on 16 th October with over 3,000 attendees. The second HCC Wedding Fayre took place at City Hall with a greater number of exhibitors and attendances than the first event held in January of last year. These are proving to be successful for promoting the venue and wedding provision and the next event has been scheduled for February 2012. Two recent events have resulted in near sell-outs at City Hall – standing concert for The Kooks on 4 th October and Tim Minchin, comedian on 26 th October who launched the Comedy Festival from City Hall. A successful all day Hull New Theatre pantomime launch took place on 19 th October with live tv coverage on both Calendar and Look North, live radio interviews on Radio Humberside and substantial media coverage from newspaper publications. Woodford Leisure Centre Come and try it Olympic Day Jonathon Edwards (former world triple jump champion) visited on 1 st - 4 - June, 1pm – 3pm. A number of activities where taking place at the time of the visit and Mr Edwards participated in a number of them. Activities taking place included: St Paul’s Boxing club, school basketball tournament, archery, fencing, trampoline sessions, parent and child biathlon competition and a ladies only event (800 metre run and swim) plus much more. The event was a success and well attended by members of the public. The event also attracted a lot of positive media coverage for the centre. New Junior session (funded through Sportivate) Street Games to be held on the outdoor pitch Friday evenings 6.30pm – 8.30pm. The session is in partnership with the Police, Community Wardens and Sports Development and Woodford Leisure Centre, Community Wardens and Police representatives to attend sessions. Free learn to swim lessons for adults at Albert Avenue, East Hull, Ennerdale and Woodford leisure centres from August. City Economy GROW As the existing GROW Programme contracts (GROW-Local Work Guarantee, GROW-Redundancy Response, and GROW-Employment Sustainability) move into the last 6 months of delivery, the Economic Inclusion Team has been engaging with prime contractors with a view to securing employment related contacts to run beyond March 2012. The team has already secured a small DWP Mandatory Work Activity contract with BEST Ltd and is working with a range of prime contractors in relation to the DWP ESF Families with Multiple Problems provision. Adizones In addition to the two adizones established last year another five (funded by the Council’s area committees and with Government grant aid) have been installed. The five additional sites were chosen to provide a mix between community utility and known key local health issues (i.e. % never exercised, coronary heart disease rates and obesity levels). There are now adizones at the following sites: • Bellfield Park (Ings) • Bude Park (Kingswood) • Issac Newton (Marfleet) • King George V Playing Field (University) • Massey Street (St Andrews) • Pearson Park (Avenues) • Rosmead Street (Southcoates West) These adizones have been utilised to deliver a summer health programme, targeted at the over 50s as nominated by local GPs and funded by NHS Hull.

    Hull History Centre: George Thorp Diaries L DIGT George Thorp Diaries 1911-1940 Biographical Background: Born 31 July 1847. George Thorp was a member of the Wesleyan Society, a trustee of the Newland Methodist Church, a member of the Temperance Society and on the Education Committee of the Sunday School Union. He was also a Property agent, Estate agent and Surveyor with offices in De Grey Street and Lowgate, Hull. He collected rents for private landlords and the Hull Corporation, as well as organising repairs, and there are numerous references in the diaries to collecting rents, paying taxes and rates, and banking sums of money. The surveying work George Thorp carried out included plans for a staircase at the offices in Lowgate, plans for three floors of the Halford Cycle premises, and he also drew plans on behalf of Gelder and Kitching, Surveyors. The business was continued after George Thorp's retirement by his son, Joseph E. Thorp. Custodial history: Deposited by Dr. Frank Barker, Secretary of the Wesleyan Society Description: Includes a series of diaries written by George Thorp, recording the weather and current events, as well as a series of press cuttings books regarding the First World War. Issues for Consideration City Centre & Gateways Albion Square 3.1 The asbestos removal works are now complete with residual asbestos content still present within structural elements of the building. Detailed structural survey investigatory works have been undertaken to inform on the condition of the mural and the anticipated life expectancy of the overall structure. In addition to this further asbestos surveys have been undertaken to better inform the costs associated with the potential demolition works, should this be the route that is agreed. The overarching report around structural integrity of the mural, demolition methodology and option appraisals is expected mid-September. The Asbestos Risk does not change. 3.2 Work continues with the contractor to develop firm costs for the scheme with a number of design options under review regarding the potential outcomes for the future of the mural.
