Lyrics here are as per what can be heard on the soundtrack, which mixes in garbage truck sounds and special effects as the garbo heroes return to doing their round). (The entire first verse is missing in the movie. Other sites list the lyrics as: Picking up boys start messing around Time is wasting away and so is my town Streets are full of poison, there’s blood on the ground No means of disposal has ever been found So can you get rid of it all by the end of this round?) The movie lyrics commence: Take a load And throw it away Down the road To the end of the day Out of mind out of sight Before you can say Hey boys, we’ve got a lot of dirty work to do (Two lines in the song are then redacted in the movie. Other sources list these two lines as: There’s a man (?) steaming in the road up the hill Stinks like hell yes, something in there must be dead) The film’s version continues with these lyrics: Looks like someone threw it on the back of a truck There’s so much too it that we can’t clean it up I’m up to my neck, but I couldn’t give a damn Take a load, And throw it away Down the road To the end of the day Out of mind, out of sight, Before you can say Hey boys, we’ve got a lot of dirty work to do (There are more repeats in the recorded song) Over end credits: This song, Garbo, performed by Steve Kearney, written by Mark and Nick Seymour, runs over the end credits. These contain animated images and roll in reverse order from screen top to bottom, forming a jumble of garbage letters at the bottom of the screen: Let me introduce myself I’m your garbage man I know all the secrets hidden in your garbage can I do I know what you’ve lost and I know what you’ve found Just enough to fill a hole in the ground I’m a garbo, born and bred, I know, I’m very well fed By all the junk that you leave in the street I take it away Take it away … Think of all the treasure Think of all the junk you’ve trashed Imagine my pleasure at all the pretty things I’ve stashed Yeah Throw out your pearls, Throw out your swine It’s all I can smile at I’m taking all of what you leave behind I’m a garbo, born and bred I go, I go where I’m led Leave out all your poison And I’ll take it away Just bring out your dead I know I keep my family fed With all the junk that you leave in the street I’ll take it away (Short guitar solo) Take it away … (Short piano and guitar solos) They’re building machines to take away my daily bread Better think of the future What you’re gunna do instead Early in the morning I come and lie So just remember when you hear me cry I’m a garbo, born and bred Wake up, and get out of bed I’ll be round in the morning To clean it up and take it away Just bring out your dead Woohh yeah, I keep my family fed No matter what your poison I’ll take it awayyyy Oh yeah … (Piano solo) (scat) Bedoopbedoobep … (guitar and piano) (another line of scat singing) I’m a garbo, born and bred I’m a garbo, I keep my family fed Leave out all your poison And I’ll take it away … Yeaah ... (another line of scat singing, followed by piano, as the song slowly fades down and ends with the sound of a dead dog landing on the copyright notice with a ‘sproing’ sound, and Max Cullen’s character Wal saying in voice over ‘I wish I hadn’t done that.’) Soundtrack releases: The Paul Kelly/ Mark Seymour song was released as a single: Picture This Records D11067 Single Released May 1992 ARIA chart position #71, AMR chart position #62 A side: Hey Boys (Mark Seymour/Paul Kelly) B side: In and Out (The Pogues, also heard in the film) Backing vocals Neil Finn, Tim Finn Bass Nick Seymour Drums Peter Jones Engineer Cameron Craig Engineer, mixed by Tony Espie Mandolin, violin Gerry Hale Vocals, guitar Paul Kelly Vocals, guitar, written by, producer, mixed by Mark Seymour The Pogues track - produced and written by The Pogues The full soundtrack was also released: CD Picture This D30616 1991 Soundtrack Executive Producers: Bruno Charlesworth and Stephen Kearney Music Research: Janine Kerr/Picture This Records Thanks to... the musicians, performers, writers, producers, engineers, publishers, record companies, management, Michael Gudinski, Gary Ashley, Simon F. (Below: stills from the film showing some of the live appearances) Composer Allan Zavod: At one time, Allan Zavod's web site could only be found at the Wayback Machine here, with Zavod's wiki, here, replicating much of the information on his original website. Subsequently, Zavod’s eponymous website revived, and could be found here. Zavod died in late November 2016 and so it is likely that these sites will best be found on the Wayback Machine. Googling his name also produced much information, obituaries, performances on YouTube, etc. Zavod's website provided this CV up to 2001, and a credit listing: Often described as a keyboard wizard Allan Zavod a graduate of Melbourne Conservatorium was discovered by Duke Ellington who after hearing him playing jazz piano arranged for him to study at Berklee School of Music where he later held a post as professor of music. Based in the USA for 20 years he played, recorded and toured with many music greats including Glen Miller Orchestra, Woody Herman Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson Big Band, Cab Calloway, Jean Luc-Ponty and George Benson, culminating in a 1984 world tour with the legendary Frank Zappa. America’s music bible "Downbeat Magazine" named Zavod one of the USA’s Top 10 Keyboardists of the 80’s.
