Dear R.I. Saltwater Anglers Association

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for your generous donation of $870 to the Arthritis Bob Marco at Gillette Stadium before the game Foundation.

Your support not only moves us closer to a cure for this debilitating disease, but also enables the Foundation to continue to work towards our mission of making life better for those we serve. We were able to fund $1.9 million in research in our local chapter for the prevention, control, and cure of arthritis. Nationwide, the Arthritis Foundation is the single, largest non-profit funder of arthritis research.

Once again, thank you for your generosity. Very truly yours, Stephen Evangelista President and CEO - 11 - R.I.S.A.A. / September, 2009 SEPTEMBER SEMINAR Monday, September 28 • 7:00 p.m. Kayak Fishing for Stripers with DAVID GIULIANO and BOB OBERG

“This is one of my favorite ways prepare fresh caught striped bass is called ceviche,” said David Henault, known as the owner of the Ocean State Tackle stores. In ceviche the fish is "cooked" in a marinade made from lime or lemon juice. In the Philliines vinegar is used. The fish and seafood used can vary, but fluke, seabass, striper, squid and are good individually or in combination.

Ingredients Dave Henault • 8-12 oz immaculately fresh fish and or seafood • 1-2 green or red peppers • 4-6 Plum tomatoes • English cucumber • 1 Spanish or red onion • Jalapeno Peppers • 1-2 bunches of cilantro • Olive oil • 4-6 lemon and or limes • Coarsely ground Black Pepper

David’s Directions • Dice fillets into small strips 1/4" x 1/2" x 1/2". Rinse in cool • Combine all vegetables (except Jalapeno) a little at a time. Try water, drain and pat dry. to maintain a balance of colors proportionally and toss to evenly • Cut lemons and limes in half a few at a time and squeeze the juice distribute. Toss lightly to coat all fish with a small amount of juice in the bottom of the bowl. • Serve at 45 - 50 degrees. It can be served on a bed of greens. • Refrigerate, tossing 2 or 3 times so fish is marinated evenly. David prefers them served on pita or tortillas chips or a thin • While the fish is “cooking” in the fridge, cut all vegetables into cracker like Carr's water crackers. small cubes. A Vineyard Bass charter trip was raffled off at the May 25th disappointment, after having caught eight good stripers just days RISAA meeting. The lucky members were Russ Grady, Paul before in this same area. Harrison, Rich Hittinger, and me, Mark Pachico. The trip was Hey, we’re still out on the water in a great boat, in great originally scheduled for Friday, June 5th, but due to both inclement company, with great weather. This is much better than a great day weather and a slow fishing report, it was rescheduled for July 10th. of work! Rich and I met Russ and Paul at the Niemice Marina in New Some time later Russ Bedford at 5:45p.m., where we met Captain Tony DaSilva on his ended up with a fish on, boat Blackjack. He was busy preparing rods for our trip, and had but after measuring it a fresh bucket of eels ready to go. We loaded our coolers and gear twice, we decided the onto the 27 ft Conch Center Console, with a 315 hp direct drive striper was undersized, diesel engine. Blackjack is a roomy, dry, and very well appointed so it was released to boat, from the top of the line electronics to the tackle station. Just fight another day. the boat alone had us all very excited for the trip. The current was now slowing; we had fished Rich with a fish on! through the entire tide cycle! We continued to fish. We had fresh eels. The tide was picking up. We’re marking fish on the screen. Our luck HAD to change. It did. Paul landed a respectable 34 inch fat striper. But the bite stopped, and it was now 2:00 AM. We all called it a night. Back at the dock Captain Tony cleaned and filleted the catch, and we all had some for the table. The Blackjack Tony DaSilva is a friendly, easy-going, and knowledgeable captain. He made the trip enjoyable and educational. The Blackjack After a few minutes of us asking questions, we cast off at 6:15. is a great fishing boat. We had a quick, smooth ride out to the Vineyard, due to calm seas, and arrived to an area just off of the Gay Head Lighthouse. BLACKJACK CHARTERS Lines went in at 7:15. We fished over a piece of structure that came up to 34 ft, and dropped off to 70 ft. The tide wasn’t really running yet so the drift Captain Tony DaSilva was slow. 401-228-4664 I set my rod in the holder for a minute and bam—it bends over. After a brief fight I landed (and Capt. Tony released) a dogfish. Inshore • Offshore After some friendly ribbing it was back to some striper fishing. The current picked up and Rich’s pole goes off, and from the Sailing from Jim's Dock in look of the bend we knew this fish had potential. After a brief Wakefield battle between Rich and fish, the captain neteed the striper, a decent 36 incher. OK, here we go, one good striper in the box. One member on each trip usually agrees to write a short story to share the experience with all members. * It should be noted that not every trip can be guaranteed to catch fish. The trip brings RISAA members together and provides an enjoyable day or night on the water. Catching fish is the extra bonus. MAVERICK CHARTERS • Capt. Jack Riley story by Curt Caserta
