They originate in the corona near the Sun’s surface as a combination of solar flares (impulsive bursts of radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectrum) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs; expulsions of magnetized plasma into interplanetary space). The radiation and energetic particles they produce can damage satellites, disrupt telecommunications and GPS navigation, and endanger astronauts in space. Many of the processes involved in triggering, driving, and sustaining solar eruptive events–including magnetic reconnection, particle acceleration, plasma heating, and energy transport in magnetized plasmas–also play important roles in phenomena throughout the Universe, such as in magnetospheric substorms, gamma-ray bursts, and accretion disks. The Sun is a unique laboratory to better understand these fundamental physical processes. -

Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) Mapping Across Temporal and Spatial Scales A White Paper for the NRC Decadal Survey of Solar and Space Physics Andrew Stephan, Scott Budzien, Ken Dymond, and Damien Chua NRL Space Science Division Overview In order to fulfill the pressing need for accurate near-Earth space weather forecasts, it is essential that future measurements include both temporal and spatial aspects of the evolution of the ionosphere and thermosphere. A combination of high altitude global images and low Earth orbit altitude profiles from simple, in-the-medium sensors is an optimal scenario for creating continuous, routine space weather maps for both scientific and operational interests. The method presented here adapts the vast knowledge gained using ultraviolet airglow into a suggestion for a next-generation, near-Earth space weather mapping network. Why the Ionosphere, Thermosphere, and Mesosphere? The ionosphere-thermosphere-mesosphere (ITM) region of the terrestrial atmosphere is a complex and dynamic environment influenced by solar radiation, energy transfer, winds, waves, tides, electric and magnetic fields, and plasma processes. Recent measurements showing how coupling to other regions also influences dynamics in the ITM [e.g. Immel et al., 2006; Luhr, et al, 2007; Hagan et al., 2007] has exposed the need for a full, three- dimensional characterization of this region. Yet the true level of complexity in the ITM system remains undiscovered primarily because the fundamental components of this region are undersampled on the temporal and spatial scales that are necessary to expose these details. The solar and space physics research community has been driven over the past decade toward answering scientific questions that have a high level of practical application and relevance. -

Solar and Space Physics: A Science for a Technological Society The 2013-2022 Decadal Survey in Solar and Space Physics Space Studies Board ∙ Division on Engineering & Physical Sciences ∙ August 2012 From the interior of the Sun, to the upper atmosphere and near-space environment of Earth, and outwards to a region far beyond Pluto where the Sun’s influence wanes, advances during the past decade in space physics and solar physics have yielded spectacular insights into the phenomena that affect our home in space. This report, the final product of a study requested by NASA and the National Science Foundation, presents a prioritized program of basic and applied research for 2013-2022 that will advance scientific understanding of the Sun, Sun- Earth connections and the origins of “space weather,” and the Sun’s interactions with other bodies in the solar system. The report includes recommendations directed for action by the study sponsors and by other federal agencies—especially NOAA, which is responsible for the day-to-day (“operational”) forecast of space weather. Martsvaladze ABSTRACT: The variations in intensity of the hydrogen emission showed a maximum during the minimum of solar activity in 1962-1963. The distribution of hydrogen content at altitudes from 400 to 1300 km was calculated. It in creased during the period of the minimum in the solar cycle. No concentration of H, emis sion around the ecliptic was detected. During the International Quiet Solar Year, spectral observa tions of the intensity of H, emission 6563 a in the airglow spec trum were conducted in Abastumani [l, 21. Continuous observations from f ,hyleighs "w 1953 to 1964 provided for finding the annual variations in H, intensity related to the cycle of solar activ ity (Fig. 1). With a decrease in solar activity, the H, intensity increased and reached a maximum in 1962-1963 while, from 1964, it again began to decrease. Objectives In this activity, students determine the rate of the Sun’s rotation by tracking and analyzing real solar data over a period of 7 days. Materials □ Student activity sheet □ Calculator □ Pen or pencil bacKgrOund In this activity, you’ll observe and track sunspots across the Sun, using real images from the National Solar Observatory’s: Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). This can also be completed with data students gather using www.helioviewer.org. See lesson 4 for instructions. GONG uses specialized telescope cameras to observe diferent layers of the Sun in diferent wavelengths of light. Each layer has a diferent story to tell. For example, the chromosphere is a layer in the lower solar atmosphere. Scientists observe this layer in H-alpha light (656.28nm) to study features such as flaments and prominences, which are clearly visible in the chromosphere. For the best view of sunspots, GONG looks to the photosphere. The photosphere is the lowest layer of the Sun’s atmosphere. It’s the layer that we consider to be the “surface” of the Sun. It’s the visible portion of the Sun that most people are familiar with. In order to best observe sunspots, scientists use photospheric light with a wavelength of 676.8nm. The images that you will analyze in this activity are of the solar photosphere. The data gathered in this activity will allow you to determine the rate of the Sun’s rotation. -

Over the last three decades there has been astonishing progress in our understanding of the solar corona and the inner heliosphere driven by remote-sensing and in-situ observations. This period of time has seen the first high-resolution X-ray and EUV observations of the corona and the first detailed measurements of the ion and electron velocity distribution functions in the inner heliosphere. Today we know that we have to treat the corona and the wind as one single object, which calls for a mission that is fully designed to investigate the interwoven processes all the way from the solar surface to the heliosphere. The meeting will provide a forum to review the advances over the last decades, relate them to our current understanding and to discuss future directions. We will concentrate one day on in- situ observations and related models of the inner heliosphere, and spend another day on remote sensing observations and modeling of the corona – always with an eye on the symbiotic nature of the two. On the third day we will direct our view towards the future. -

A few prediction methods have been developed based on the precursor technique which is found to be successful for forecasting the solar activity. Considering the geomagnetic activity aa indices during the descending phase of the preceding solar cycle as the precursor, we predict the maximum amplitude of annual mean sunspot number in cycle 24 to be 111 ± 21. This suggests that the maximum amplitude of the upcoming cycle 24 will be less than cycles 21–22. Further, we have estimated the annual mean geomagnetic activity aa index for the solar maximum year in cycle 24 to be 20.6 ± 4.7 and the average of the annual mean sunspot num- ber during the descending phase of cycle 24 is estimated to be 48 ± 16.8. Introduction Predictions of solar and geomagnetic activities are important for various purposes, including the operation of low-earth orbiting satellites, operation of power grids on Earth, and satellite communication systems. Various techniques, namely, even/odd behaviour, precursor, spectral, climatology, recent climatology, neural networks have been used in the past for the prediction of solar activity. Many investigators (Ohl 1966; Kane 1978, 2007; Thompson 1993; Jain 1997; Hathaway & Wilson 2006) have used the ‘precursor’ technique to forecast the solar activity.
