Music Accountancy & Rights Song: MY Chemical Romance The Black Parade By Alejandra Dibn, Glenn Mulder. Jules Janssen Maaike van der Vlist & Pieter Greup About My Chemical Romance y Chemical Romance, also known as ‘MCR’ started in 2001 in New Jersey when Gerard Way (lead singer) Mstarted writing music after 9/11 and found a band to play live with. They brought out their first album ‘I brought you my bullets, you brought me your love’ in 2002. This album wasn’t as much a success as the next one ‘Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge’ in 2004. It gave them a lot of media attention worldwide, but still not as much as ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ in 2006. They toured all over the world, sold out stadiums and sold over 3 million copies of the album worldwide. Welcome to the Black Parade is more like a ‘rock opera’, or so they say themselves. It has a theme, characters and styling throughout the whole album and the era of the band. The album also got nominated for a Grammy award. The sound of MCR could be described as emo, punk, alternative rock and post-hardcore. This is just to give them a few labels, but their sound has developed many more times. After Welcome to the Black Parade they released one more studio album “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabu- lous Killjoys” and some more studio songs. They stopped in 2013. T-Split publishing deal n view of the previous elements of the T-split, the publishing agreement suitable for “Welcome to the black para- de” should be a Co-publishing deal. The first reason of this choice is because MCR already has a successful track record of past hits. Thus the Igroup has the potential of securing a record deal. Moreover, MCR already has its own publishing company (Blow The Doors Off Chicago Music) and the publishing of the song is administered by EMI Music Publishing. Actually a co-publishing agreement is two deals in one. For “Welcome to the black parade”, the first deal is a song- writer agreement because MCR transfers its copyright to EMI (the publisher). The second deal is EMI transferring a percentage of the copyright back to MCR under a co-publishing deal. However as MCR has its own publishing company, all the monies are paid to Blow The Doors Off Chicago Music and that company is responsible for paying MCR. Thus, Blow The Doors Off Chicago Music (the writers’ publishing company) co-owns the copyrights of the song with EMI (the publisher). The co-publishing is a great agreement because MCR sells and transfers only a portion of the copyright and retains the other portion for its own publishing company. More importantly, with this deal it’s easier to earn more money because Blow The Doors Off Chicago Music earns 50% of the income plus a songwriter’s share on the top of that. deal memo he songwriter assigns an agreed percentage to the publisher, usually (but not always), a 50/50 split. Thus, the writer conveys 1⁄2 of the publisher’s share to the publisher, but retains all of writer’s share. In a typical T“75/25 co-pub deal,” the writer gets 100% of the song writer’s share, and 50% of the publisher’s share, or 75% of the entire copyrights, with the remaining 25% going to the publisher. Thus, when royalties are due and payable, the writer/co-publisher will receive 75% of the income, while the publisher will retain 25%. Calculactions Page Excel on Sales , Live Performance & RTV airplay My Chemical Romance: The black parade flowchart conclusion he decisions made on the decided deals as mentioned earlier are based on discoveries found in the ASCAP and Buma/Stemra databases. Founding that MCR has its own publishing company (Blow The Doors Off Chi- cago Music) was a big clue. In there it became quite obvious that EMI Publishing is the co-publisher and they do get a part of the me- Tchanical and performance rights. This is why it had to be a co-publishing deal, instead of a sub-publishing deal. The co-publishing agreement is one of the most important deal because the songwriter gets a share of certain rights and income that he would not be entitled to under the standard writer-publisher contract. MCR has the power to negotiate such a deal because of their past success, that’s the main reason a co-publishing deal is not open to everyone. The group gets to keep a big part of the copyright (about 75%), which was the main reason for setting up their own publishing company..
