BeneficeNewsSept20.indd 2 06/08/2020 10:08:29 From The Vicarage Dear Friends I write this from Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, where I am currently serving as Chaplain to the Accelerated Officer Training Programme 2020. This is one of the few programmes considered essential to continue at present. It is testing the limits of how operational training capability can be maintained under Covid. We are a quarantined ‘bubble’ of 48 Royal Navy Officer Cadets – including six regular and three reservist trainee Chaplains, with eight staff of which I am one. One of the Sub Lieutenants has had to withdraw for personal reasons, and I am ‘Requested and Required’ to go aboard ship to cover that gap while the cadets do their sea time, as no-one else can enter the bubble without 14 days quarantine. This training evolution is regarded as essential in proving our resilience to Covid, and our ability to act to defend and protect ourselves as a nation. I know that politicians refer to our situation as ‘being at war’ with Covid. I thought the language overblown. However, events have shown that this is indeed the seriousness of the situation. In war, it is not just wealth and material, personnel and equipment which count, but morale. This virus, though having no mind or purpose, has radically undermined our human morale and ability to operate. I had not seen it so much when with you in our green valleys, so well served by real functioning community. We have had an extraordinary community response and service to meet need. However, take a step outside and you experience the real fear and doubt which fill so many minds. The virus has found the Achilles heel of our risk-averse, mortality-denying, health and safety-first culture and bitten deep and hard. We are paralysed by degrees of risk which former generations, not having our resources and protections, just swallowed down of necessity and carried on. This reaction is causing chaos economically, psychologically and spiritually. On my return I will be committed to restoring normality in whatever means are available to us, and lawful. I am certain that we all need to engage to resist this insidious creeping paralysis of human spirit and action. My additional service will be for 17 days, and I will return on 27th August rather than the 10th as I had expected. Continued on page 5 3

BeneficeNewsSept20.indd 4 06/08/2020 10:08:29 The parishes are in the capable hands of the Churchwardens and Revd Alveen Thoresen. The Zoom services continue Sunday by Sunday – with the help and assistance of Jane and Harriet. So far, I have been in email and phone contact and have been able to deal with any parish or Rural Deanery business which has arisen day by day. However, when I am at sea this will not be possible for security reasons. I look forward to returning to you. REVD CANON JONATHAN STILL, CHAPLAIN RNR Services in the Benefice Please check the church noticeboards, or refer to any email messages concerning when the churches in our Benefice will be re-opening for services. At the time of writing, the timetable for re-opening our churches is still uncertain, Jonathan.

Cerne Abbas NEWS Cerne Abbas Coronavirus Support Cerne Abbas Coronavirus Support had around 70 volunteers and a team of eight co-ordinators offering a range of help to the community. A report is being compiled, recording the service and the use of the grant money received from the Coronavirus Community Fund. From 25th March up towards the end of July 2020, nearly 1,300 hours of volunteer support has been used to answer a freephone helpline and email service open 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. They handled over 170 requests for support. However, the requests have all but dried up, and CACS plans to cease its phone line from the end of August. The report will be available in the Not-the-Bus-Shelter from September and will also be available on the Cerne Valley website. Should the need arise again, all the structures that enabled CACS to provide support will be left in place. CACS would like to thank everyone involved in the project for all their energy and enthusiasm.

St Mary’s Church ST MARY’S PARTNER IN MISSION – THE SUDAN MEDICAL LINK Our partner in mission this month is the Sudan Medical Link which depends entirely on support from the parishes and individuals in the Dioceses of Salisbury. They work with the bishops of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Sudan providing funding for services to dioceses ravaged by years of civil war. They fund the training of clinical officers, nurses, midwives and other clinical staff to provide high quality care. They purchase and distribute primary health care kits (basic medicines) to ECSSS and some other NGO clinics. 5

BeneficeNewsSept20.indd 8 06/08/2020 10:08:31 Jane Tearle WEATHERVANE RESTORATION (TREASURER@CERNECHURCHFRIENDS. ORG.UK) As a friend of St Mary’s, Caroline Tisdall has sponsored the restoration of the weathervane (below and right) that sits upon the SW corner of the tower. It had lost its east cardinal compass point letter and the south cardinal point arm was badly bent, the ironwork had also become badly corroded. When it was taken down it was found that the cardinal point letters and the weathercock had been gilded and Caroline also wanted this to be redone. The last weathervane restoration was in the 1980s and that was funded by Elizabeth Edward who also lived in the Pitchmarket. So next time you need to see which way the wind is blowing thank Caroline!

Cerne Abbas Village Hall (BOOKINGS 07508 039280, [email protected]) Following government guidelines, the village hall is now ‘Covid-19 Secure’. Hygiene measures are in place and a one-way system established to maintain the latest ‘social distancing’ guidelines. Posters will remind all of their continuing responsibilities to prevent the spread of the virus. A Risk Assessment has been produced, setting out the measures the hall is taking, but also what extra measures will be required by anyone hiring the hall to maintain a Covid-19 free environment. Acknowledging that the Risk Assessment has been read and understood will be a condition of hire for booking. This, and special Covid-19 conditions of hire, will be posted on the hall website. Potential hirers will also be required to produce their own Risk Assessment, to ensure the safety of the event and to leave the hall Covid-19 Secure as they found it. Anyone contemplating hiring the hall is required to nominate a Covid-19 representative, to liaise directly with Tom Kirkham and Clive Horn on all matters relating to the use of the hall during the present difficulties. It must be said that the present two-metre social distancing guidelines remain the crippler for anyone wanting to use the hall. The hall management 9

BeneficeNewsSept20.indd 10 06/08/2020 10:08:31 committee has experimented with these and determined that the two-metre limit will only allow for 20 people in the main hall and 12 in the JMR. This limit can be reduced to one metre where two metres is not viable, but only with ‘mitigating factors’ in place such as increasing ventilation by opening outer doors and windows and wearing face coverings. However, even with mitigation factors in place, the numbers allowed would not increase significantly. Bookings will also have to be ‘distanced’ for safety reasons. To be brutally frank, with Government Guidelines as they stand it would be unwise to plan for other than essential gatherings before the New Year.

As it has become clear that it will not be possible to hold meetings for more than Jane Tearle 30 people In the Village Hall for the foreseeable future, we have unfortunately had no alternative but to cancel the meetings and talks which were to take place on 24th September, 22nd October and 26th November. We hope that, as with most of the talks planned for this year that have already been cancelled, we will be able to re-arrange them for next year. We shall continue to publish our online magazine, at least until it is possible to hold meetings and talks again. The next issue will be published on 4th September. It will be emailed to all members and others who have indicated their interest in it. It will also be available on our website, www,cerneabbashistory.org. It will contain more fascinating articles about Cerne Abbas, so be sure not to miss it.

We would very Jane Tearle much like to receive your comments and suggestions about the magazine, what subjects you would like us to cover, what other features you would like it to have. Please send them to Gordon at the email address above. Please also snd him any local photographs of historical interest that you may have.

Apologies for this disappointing but inevitable news. All being well, the course will run again in autumn 2021. www.elizabethmerry.co.uk PILATES AT CERNE After months of lockdown, physical inactivity and inertia, Pilates can offer an ideal opportunity to ‘escape’, improving physical and mental health. This is an exercise method dedicated to increasing strength, flexibility and agility with postural control. It can alleviate back pain and, through strengthening the core muscles, enhances balance and body awareness. All classes are small groups, having fun, to achieve this objective. Carole Bradshaw has been teaching Pilates for the past 10 years, having qualified through APPI (Australian Pilates and Physiotherapy Institute). Classes will start in mid-October, on Thursday mornings from 11am to 12 noon, dependent on the opening of the Village Hall and the lifting of the Covid restrictions. Please contact Carole Bradshaw on341861 [email protected] to find out more. All pictures Jane Tearle

OldSaddler.indd 1 02/12/2019 10:45:25 primary care across Dorset is seeking to continue to deliver services, via this new approach, while maximising the use of technology. With this in mind, it is vital that we ensure people understand how to access primary care to maintain patient and staff safety and establish a ‘new normal’ which embraces the positive changes brought over the last few months. KEY MESSAGES • Primary care has remained open throughout the pandemic, even though the surgery’s doors are closed. • If you think you need to see a doctor please call the practice for a telephone appointment or use e-consult via the practice website. Note that to manage as many patients as possible in a safe and appropriate way, you might not see or speak to your GP of choice. • If you need to be seen face-to-face then you will be given an appointment to come to the practice. Please only visit the surgery in person if you have an appointment; remember the practice also offers video consultations, so please ask about these. • The surgery wants to discourage people waiting inside, to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Coming in for a booked appointment means you will be seen promptly. Staff will clean down areas before your arrival to keep you safe. • Routine vaccinations and immunisations and cervical screening are important and are available at the practice. • If you have coronavirus symptomsdo not come into the practice – instead, self isolate and seek help via your practice, ring NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) at Cerne Abbas Surgery is keen to support the healthcare team with the safe delivery of this year’s flu clinics in October 2020 and is currently recruiting volunteers to help in a safe and managed way. Due to covid-19 the surgery is looking for volunteer marshals (up to 10 volunteers per half day session) to work in pairs to provide cover. Additional sessions are in the planning phase and dates/locations will be provided as soon as possible but current plans include: • Tuesday 13th October: morning and afternoon sessions at Cerne Abbas Village Hall. There are currently about 10 volunteers but to have enough for all volunteers to support one session each, around 70 volunteers are necessary. If you are able to give up to three to four hours of your time to help others in your community to access the flu clinics safely, please register your interest as soon as possible giving availability for dates in October (Monday to Saturday) with June and Eugene Balbinski, [email protected] (preferred) or 341714. Please note that those who have been ‘shielding’ or are similarly vulnerable should not volunteer. NATIONAL ALLOTMENT WEEK You will receive this newsletter towards the end of National Allotment Week. This celebrates how important allotments and other open spaces are, and the role they play in helping people to live healthier lifestyles, grow their own food, develop friendships and bolster communities. Spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical well-being. 20

BeneficeNewsSept20.indd 20 06/08/2020 10:08:39 Jane Tearle The theme for 2020 is Growing Food for Health and Well-being, a reflection of the many benefits of growing, cooking and eating your own fruit and vegetables. You may not have access to your local allotment, but why not consider planting vegetables in your garden. If you don’t have access to a garden, you could plant salad leaves or herbs in a window box or plant pot. Whatever you do, take some time this month to appreciate being outside in our beautiful countryside and allow nature to work its wonders!

A shortened Saturday league system has started with five August matches culminating with a final game on 6th September. There are some Sunday Friendlies including a game between a Cerne Abbas Village team and the Club on 23rd August. There are also a few midweek evening games but these cease to be possible as the nights draw in during the second half of August. There have been pleasing numbers of juniors at the Saturday morning practices and hopefully some matches will be arranged. If you wish to watch cricket for any time, it is best to bring a chair or perhaps watch from a car as the pavilion is out-of-bounds to spectators apart from the toilets. THE 100 CLUB WINNERS for July were Hamish Wilson, Alison de Candole and Rosie Cole.

We are really hoping that they will come to Cerne Abbas and that we will be able to host a performance of Great Expectations in the vicarage garden. Because of social distancing we will need to keep numbers low and local. Unfortunately the tour has not yet been confirmed at the time of printing, but if we are lucky enough to be chosen as a site, then posters will be put up in the village shop and around the village. If it happens it will probably be early to mid-September. Thank you in advance to Jonathan and Jane Still for their generosity and enthusiastic support of this community venture. Short Mat Bowls (CONTACT Eugene and June Balbinski 341714, [email protected]) In early July the Club Committee met, suitably physically distanced, in the Chair’s lovely garden, in response to an enquiry from the Village Hall about resuming short mat bowls. A critical difficulty of resuming safely is that of ensuring physical distancing is maintained, which would severely limit numbers. This is especially important as club sessions might take place during the winter with minimal indoor ventilation and possibly more Covid-19 in circulation. The Club Committee decided that, with all the restrictions necessary as things stand, resuming short mat bowls under the current conditions would not be enjoyable and still present significant risk. Given the members’ age profile it was decided that the Club would not return to playing until it is much safer than now to do so. A club sub-committee of three was set up to monitor the Covid-19 situation and eventually prepare a suitable risk assessment. The members comprise the Club Chair, Carol Hann, Mike Pedrick and Eugene Balbinski. Eugene has agreed temporarily to liaise with the Village Hall regarding Covid-19. Towards the end of July, the English Short Mat Bowls Association (ESMBA) shared a provisional route map for resuming short mat bowls in advance of discussing it with the government. The ESMBA stressed that this was subject to change but it considered restarting in September, though with only four players per mat. This might be increased to six players per mat, appropriately physically distanced, the following month. Ultimately, the Club and its members will need to decide for themselves, and will keep everyone including the Village Hall updated as far as possible. NOW Cerne (CONTACT Marion Lee 341375, [email protected]) NOW is unable to tell when meetings will be reinstated as the Village Hall can only hold between 20 and 30 people at any time. However, members are gradually reflecting on lockdown life and these thoughts, projects and memories will be distributed to members via email over the coming weeks. If you would like a photograph, poem, memory in anything that has happened in lockdown included in this, please send this to [email protected] Thank you! 26

Whether strolling, or striding, among the butterflies surrounded by a huge variety of wild flowers, every walk is a pleasure. A group of photographers from Dorchester Camera Club recently explored the wealth of walks around the village, commenting on the diverse subjects for their lenses to alight on and promising to be back on a less hot afternoon. We do have a very photogenic village! The church tower grabbed attention recently when two ‘technical ropes experts’ plied their trade dangling from ropes on each of the four faces. The work will continue for a while and then – by the time you read this if all goes to plan – there will be the return of the weather vane after its re-gilding (see page 9). Jane Tearle CARER SUPPORT DORSET’S ‘HERE TO TALK’ SERVICE helps unpaid carers in Dorset reduce their feelings of loneliness, isolation and anxiety during this time so that they can keep well and carry on caring for their loved-ones. Some carers have not only struggled under lockdown measures, but in the aftermath of lockdown – when non-carers return to ‘normality’ – carers stay in a similarly isolated situation caring for their loved-ones. Carer Support is recruiting volunteers who can support one to two carers each over the course of 12 weeks. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Here to Talk service and information can be found atwww. carersupportdorset.co.uk/volunteer/ HOW ABOUT RE-THINKING YOUR VIEW OF NATURISM? Many believe that being nude in company is simply ‘madness’, yet when they try it, they discover a sense of freedom unknown before. If you lack self esteem because of how you perceive your body – you’ll wonder why you worried. The Southwest Outdoor Club (SWOC) is situated close to Cerne Abbas. It is a haven of beauty and tranquility, available to enjoy all year, and without clothing weather permitting. The club’s members are a mixed bunch from all walks of life, very much like a caring family with highest standards. You would be made welcome. For further information, please refer to SWOC’s advertisement on page 25. 30

BeneficeNewsSept20.indd 31 06/08/2020 10:08:49 Ash dieback in Cerne Abbas – a photographic diary Ash dieback may have not been in

Jane Tearle the news recently but it is still with us and quietly marching through the country. It is a fungal disease, affecting only ash trees, and was inadvertently imported to the UK in 2012. In 2018, we were shown how to identify the disease by a woodland worker managing a small wood near Owermoigne, and then on walking the paths around our own village started to notice affected trees here too. We sent photographs to the Forestry Commission for positive identification. We felt it a good idea to document how ash dieback progresses and affects trees over time and asked Jane Tearle for her expert photographic assistance. We have just completed the third year of photographing a discrete number of trees and groups of ash around the village, especially around the old abbey grounds beyond the cemetery. Thankfully, the progress of the disease seems slow so far, although it is noticeable that the density of some of the canopies is beginning to thin, especially the tell- tale signs of bare branches pointing upwards at the very top of some trees and clusters of dead brown leaves, as can be seen in the photograph here. The implications for the change in our natural landscape are huge especially locally as the ash thrives on chalkland; the Woodland Trust estimates that 95% of ash trees could be lost in the UK overall. There are still hopes that a strain of ash will show resistance, and we know that older trees can survive initial attacks, although they will become weakened and susceptible to further infections. We hope to continue the project annually over the years to come.
