Hollyhead & Savage Trip Report South Africa 3rd to 22nd September 2015 (20 days) Female Cheetah with cubs and Impala kill by Heinz Ortmann Trip Report compiled by Tour Leader: Heinz Ortmann Trip Report Hollyhead & Savage Private South Africa September 2015 2 Tour Summary A fantastic twenty day journey that began in the beautiful Overberg region and fynbos of the Western Cape, included the Wakkerstroom grasslands, coastal dune forest of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the Baobab-studded hills of Mapungubwe National Park and ended along a stretch of road searching for Kalahari specials north of Pretoria amongst many others. We experienced a wide variety of habitats and incredible birds and mammals. An impressive 400-plus birds and close to 50 mammal species were found on this trip. This, combined with visiting little-known parts of South Africa such as Magoebaskloof and Mapungubwe National Park, made this tour special as well as one with many unforgettable experiences and memories for the participants. Our journey started out from Cape Town International Airport at around lunchtime on a glorious sunny early-spring day. Our journey for the first day took us eastwards through the Overberg region and onto the Agulhas plains where we spent the next two nights. The farmlands in these parts appear largely barren and consist of single crop fields and yet host a surprising number of special, localised and endemic species. Our afternoon’s travels through these parts allowed us views of several more common and widespread species such as Egyptian and Spur-winged Geese, raptors like Jackal Buzzard, Rock Kestrel and Yellow-billed Kite, Speckled Pigeons, Capped Wheatear, Pied Starling, the ever present Pied and Cape Crow, White-necked Raven and Pin-tailed Whydah, almost in full breeding plumage. -

Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. TFCG, DSM, Tz. 1-86 pp. Cover photograph: Forest at the Nongwe Study Site by Justine Gwegime. ii ii Executive Summary The Ukaguru Mountains encompass six catchment forest reserves within the Eastern Arc Mountains (Ikwamba, Mamboto, Mamboya, Mamiwa-Kisara North, Mamiwa-Kisara South and Uponera). Mamiwa– Kisara North and South comprise the largest forest block in the Ukaguru Mountains. The reserves cover 14,469 ha (Mamiwa-Kisara North is 8,203 ha and Mamiwa-Kiwara South is 6,266 ha). The reserves are approximately 80 km from Kilosa and 20 km from Gairo. Mamiwa-Kisara forest is part of the Ukaguru Mountains Important Bird Area. At least three strictly endemic and 14 Eastern Arc endemic vertebrate species are found in the Ukaguru Mountain forests (Rovero et al., 2014). The forests also contain plants species that are either strictly endemic, such as Lobelia sancta (strictly endemic to Mamiwa-Kisara forest), or of restricted distribution, such as Impatiens ukagaruensis as well as Allanblackia stuhlmannii, Schefflera lukwangulensis, Pavetta lynesii, Streptocarpus schliebenii and Arisaema uluguruense (Lovett and Pocs, 1993). Dr Max Price began his term of office as Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town in July, 2008. Previous to his appointment he was an independent consultant in the fields of public health, health policy, medical education, and human resources for health planning, as well as consultant to the national Department of Education regarding financing of tertiary education of health professionals. Dr Price has a strong transformation record, built primarily during his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1996 to 2006. As Dean and member of the senior executive team, he spearheaded a series of transformation initiatives, including the Internal Reconciliation Commission. He established a new graduate entry medical degree, academic programs in rural health, bioethics, sports medicine, emergency medicine, and biomedical sciences. He also founded South Africa's first university-owned private teaching hospital, and the first university research company and raised over R130 million for new initiatives in the Faculty of Health Sciences. He has an MBBCh degree from the University of the Witwatersrand which he obtained in 1979; a BA (Hons) PPE (Oxon 1983); an M.Sc in Community Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and a Diploma in Occupational Health from Wits. A former Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Four Outstanding Young South Africans Award winner (1992), and Student Representative Council president, Dr Price's professional work has included clinical work in hospitals and rural primary health care; he was a research fellow in health economics at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine from 1986 to 1987; a senior researcher at the Centre for Health Policy and Director of the Centre for Health Policy at Wits University as well as a visiting Takemi Fellow in International Health at the Harvard School of Public Health from 1994 to 1995. -

DSM, Tz. 1 - 142 pp. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction The Eastern Arc Mountain forests in Mufindi District lie at the south-western extreme of the Eastern Arc. The forests are found on the Mufindi plateau at the top of the Mufindi escarpment. The plateau includes a mosaic of forest, commercial tea cultivation, pine and eucalyptus plantation, coffee and subsistence agriculture. The forests of Mufindi are highly fragmented and many of them show high levels of disturbance some of which dates back over 50 years. Lovett & Pócs (1993) suggest that parts of the larger Mufindi forests such as Kigogo were cultivated in the mid 19th Century and cite the presence of agricultural ridges under the forest. -

Tanzania, 30 November to 21 December 2020 Thomas Pettersson This tour was organized by Tanzania Birding and Beyond Safaris and unfortunately, I was the only participant as my friend was prevented from going as was planned. The flights from Stockholm via Addis Ababa to Dar es Salaam and back with Ethiopian Airlines were uneventful. The only differences from my previous flights were that wearing face masks on the aircrafts was mandatory, and recommended at the airports, and that they checked my body temperature at both arrival and departure. I am not sure what the consequences would have been in case of fever. You must also complete a health declaration both for transfer and arrival. The outbound flight from Stockholm to Addis Ababa was about half empty and on the return perhaps only 25 % of the seats were occupied, which meant good nights sleep on three seats both ways. The flights between Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam were fully booked both ways. The domestic flights with Coastal Aviation from Dar es Salaam via Zanzibar (Unguja) to Pemba and on to Tanga were also smooth, with the same regulations as above. The aircrafts were painfully small though, 12 seats. Not much space for legs and hand luggage. On the other hand, the distances are short. All in all, the tour was a big success. Accommodation was generally good, although basic at some places, but nothing to complain about. Food was excellent and plentiful, and I had no issues with the stomach. The drivers and the guides were excellent, in particular the outstanding Anthony, who guided most of the tour. -

The wonderful Usambara Eagle Owl... our inevitable bird of the trip! (Pete Morris) REMOTE TANZANIA 27 SEPTEMBER / 1 – 16 / 24 OCTOBER 2016 LEADER: PETE MORRIS Our 2017 tour to ‘Remote Tanzania’ turned out to be a fantastic adventure that way-surpassed most of our expectations. And with the addition of a pre-tour Northern Tanzania endemics extension, and a post-tour Ud- zungwa Mountains extension, the tour really was converted to an ‘Ultimate Tanzania’. For most of the tour we were accompanied by our ever reliable, super friendly and effcient local driver and excellent local guide, and were blessed with largely good weather, most importantly when we were camping up in the mountains. With such a good set up and conditions, there were few excuses, so we effciently set about our task of hoovering up the endemics, whilst enjoying the other wonders that this great country has to offer. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Remote Tanzania 2016 www.birdquest-tours.com The stunning Swynnerton’s Robin... a highlight of the Udzungwa Extension (Pete Morris) The pre-tour extension involved a whistle stop trek from Arusha to the Lariboro Plains and then down to Ndutu on the edge of the great Serengeti Plains and back via the amazing Ngorongoro Crater. Our task was to fnd the endemics: Grey-breasted Spurfowl, Yellow-collared and Fischer’s Lovebirds, Beesley’s Lark, Rufous-tailed Weaver and Ashy Starling all performed well alongside an excellent cast of other hoped-for birds and mam- mals. The main tour saw us travelling through arid plains and on to the South Pare Mountains, the East and West Usambaras, the attractive Pemba Island, the remote Uluguru and Ukaguru Mountains, the impressive Mikumi National Park and its surrounding miombo woodlands and the little explored Kilombero Plains. -

No part of this dissertation has been submitted to any other university in application for a higher degree. ii Conflict & Communication: Consequences Of Female Nest Confinement In Yellow-Billed Hornbills Summary The most striking feature of hornbills (Bucerotiformes) is their unusual nesting behaviour. Before laying, a female hornbill enters the nest in a tree cavity. Uniquely among birds, she then seals the nest entrance using her faeces and locally available materials, leaving a narrow gap only 1 cm wide. Through this tiny slit, the female is totally dependent on her mate for between 40 days in the smallest hornbills and up to 130 days in the largest. Once walled in the nest, the female will lay her eggs and shed all of her wing and tail feathers. The male then becomes completely responsible for provisioning his mate and a few weeks later, the chicks. When her feathers have regrown, the female breaks out of the nest, often before the chicks are fully grown. The chicks then reseal the entrance until they too are ready to fledge. This thesis describes attempts to better understand the nesting behaviour of hornbills.
