A Long Walk Home: The Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S. Neiberg United States Army War College and Robert M. Citino National World War II Museum1 Abstract This article analyzes the themes of class and military service in the Springsteen canon. As a member of the baby boom generation who narrowly missed service in Vietnam, Springsteen’s reflection on these heretofore unappreciated themes should not be surprising. Springsteen’s emergence as a musician and American icon coincide with the end of conscription and the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. He became an international superstar as Americans were debating the meaning of the post-Vietnam era and the patriotic resurgence of the Reagan era. Because of this context, Springsteen himself became involved in veterans issues and was a voice of protest against the 2003 Iraq War. In a well-known monologue from his Live 1975-85 box set (1986), Bruce Springsteen recalls arguing with his father Douglas about the younger Springsteen’s plans for his future. Whenever Bruce provided inadequate explanations for his life goals, Douglas responded that he could not wait for the Army to “make a man” out of his long-haired, seemingly aimless son. Everybody’s Got a hungry heart The Duality in Bruce Springsteen by Andy Paine Two hearts This zine is the result of years of trying to explain to various people my love of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. For many, especially those like me who were born after Bruce’s commercial peak with Born In The USA, Bruce Springsteen is like peak hour traffic or the internet or something – so ubiquitous in our subconscious that you never really think about it. On classic hits radio, in karaoke bars, as a trope to be imitated and parodied; his epic songs of cadillacs and highways and American dreams can be seen as just another kitschy relic of another time, or just one more attack in the never-ending onslaught of US pop culture imperialism. I think that’s why some people are surprised to discover my great love of Bruce Springsteen. But love him I do, and my feelings have only grown stronger the older I have gotten. Partial as I am to a good classic rock song or sax solo; it’s Springsteen the lyricist that I love. So many of his songs are little short stories, and these vignettes avoid tales of rockstar excess or high-concept artistic statement. They are stories of ordinary working class people, written in the classic language of ordinary working class people – rock’n’roll. In this way there is certainly a simplicity to Bruce Springsteen. And I’m sure for many listeners, “The Boss” represents a nostalgic ideal of a simpler, rose-tinted Americana. -

Jon Landau the advent of Bruce Springsteen, who made rock and roll a matter of life and death again, seemed nothing short of a miracle to me . Bruce Springsteen is the last of rock's great innocents. Dave Marsh Whether these respected critics see Springsteen as the future of great rock or the end of it, they do regard him with respect for his ability to convey the basic feeling of rock. And they are not alone in this opinion. From the start of his career, Springsteen has received a great deal of critical acclaim. This acclaim, in part because of his performing ability, seems quite fitting since his shows usually last for two and a half hours and often continue for four or even five hours. Relentlessly, he gives of himself to the thousands of fans -- his cult following -- who have come to see their own Rock Messiah. Upon analysis of the lyrics of Springsteen's songs, lyrics which he has written, one sees that he has a unique talent f()r reflecting the situation of the lower-middle class which he grew up in. In fact, in all of the albums he has released up to this time, he has written about the culture of the lower-middle class. -

Runaway American Dream HOPE AND DISILLUSION IN THE EARLY WORK OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Two young Mexican immigrants who risk their lives trying to cross the border; thousands of factory workers losing their jobs when the Ohio steel industry collapsed; a Vietnam veteran who returns to his hometown, only to discover that he has none anymore; and young lovers learning the hard way that romance is a luxury they cannot afford. All of these people have two things in common. First, they are all disappointed that, for them, the American dream has failed. Rather, it has become a bitter nightmare from which there is no waking up. Secondly, their stories have all been documented by the same artist – a poet of the poor as it were – from New Jersey. Over the span of his 43-year career, Bruce Springsteen has captured the very essence of what it means to dream, fight and fail in America. That journey, from dreaming of success to accepting one’s sour destiny, will be the main subject of this paper. While the majority of themes have remained present in Springsteen’s work up until today, the way in which they have been treated has varied dramatically in the course of those more than forty years. It is this evolution that I will demonstrate in the following chapters. But before looking at something as extensive as a life-long career, one should first try to create some order in the large bulk of material. Many critics have tried to categorize Springsteen’s work in numerous ‘phases’. Some of them have reasonable arguments, but most of them made the mistake of creating strict chronological boundaries between relatively short periods of time1, unfortunately failing to see the numerous connections between chronologically remote works2 and the continuity that Springsteen himself has pointed out repeatedly. -

His first albums received critical claim with comparisons to Bob Dylan, but did not sell well with the fans. Bruce Springsteen's career had begun. Springsteen was born in Freehold, New Jersey, on September 23, 1949. He grew up in a "normal middle class family" and first started playing around with the guitar in High School. After graduating from High School he moved to New York to try and break into the Folk Music scene. After getting nowhere on this front he returned to, be it reluctantly, to Asbury Park, N.J. and hooked up with a number of bands. With brief stints with such bands as Rogues and Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, Springsteen found himself a place with the E-Street Band, and with them he remained until 1989. Though, this wouldn't be the last time they would play together. The 1973 albums marked the beginning of Springsteen's career and since then, "The Boss" has sold tens of millions of albums and won over legions of loyal fans worldwide in his 30 plus years as a "rock and roll legend". His break came after a tour with the band Chicago. Springsteen captivated the audiences in these live shows, and seeing an opportunity, the singer-songwriter came up with what is called his breakthrough effort Born to Run in 1974. -

So many travel there, I‘m going now while I‘m still young my darling meet me there Wish me luck my lovely I‘ll send for you when I can And we‘ll make our home in the American Land. 1 The words “American Land”, made famous by the US singer-songwriter Pete Seeger and translated from a 1940’s song by Andrew Kovaly, a Slovakian immigrant, would appear to point to a sense of hope and plenty, referring to a place where the poem’s protagonist could fulfill his desire of a decent job and a home in the promised land. -

60) Murder Incorporated So the comfort that you keep's a gold-plated, snub-nosed .32 Not quite sure why this doesn’t get more plays. It is a real belter, pumps you up, would be a great show opener. Would have been right at home on Darkness. Has you rocking from go to woe. Bruce leaves nobody behind on this and you’re taken on a six minute power ride, and there is no time for stopping. This was initially recorded back in 1982 with the Born In The USA sessions, but did not see an official release until the release of greatest hits in 1995. From the get go it sounds like classic Springsteen. The thud of Max’s drums, followed with the intro of the guitars. The organs feature prominently too. And for the next six minutes, you feel compelled to tap your foot to the beat and fill with anger, because let’s face it, this song doesn’t exactly put a smile on your face. That’s not to say songs need to have a happy vibe about them to enjoy them. The sax solo feels like it’s just been shoved in for the sake of it. But somehow Bruce managed to make it work. Nils’ wows us with a blistering solo before the bridge and we are treated to one final verse and raspy Bruce belts out a “I could tell you were just frustrated livin with Murder Incoporated.” Bruce struts his stuff and nearly sets his guitar on fire, Stevie throws a punch back (much like the Saint duel at Hammersmith), but Bruce shows why he’s Boss. -

“Outlaw Pete”: Bruce Springsteen and the Dream-Work of Cosmic American Music Peter J. Fields Midwestern State University Abstract During the 2006 Seeger Sessions tour, Springsteen shared his deep identification with the internal struggle implied by old spirituals like “Jacob’s Ladder.” While the Magic album seemed to veer wide of the Seeger Sessions ethos, Working on a Dream re-engages mythically with what Greil Marcus would call “old, weird America” and Gram Parsons deemed “cosmic American music.” Working suggests the universe operates according to “cosmic” principles of justice, judgment, and salvation, but is best understood from the standpoint of what Freud would call “dream work” and “dream thoughts.” As unfolded in Frank Caruso’s illustrations for the picturebook alter ego of Working‘s “Outlaw Pete,” these dynamics may allude to Springsteen’s conflicted relationship with his father. The occasion of the publication in December 2014 of a picturebook version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Outlaw Pete,” the first and longest song on the album Working on a Dream (2009), offers Springsteen scholars and fans alike a good reason to revisit material that, as biographer Peter Ames Carlin remarks, failed in the spring American tour of that year to “light up the arenas.”1 When the Working on a Dream tour opened in April 2009 in San Jose, at least Copyright © Peter Fields, 2016.
