There are many other small projects not listed that help manage and interpret the facilities, natural and cultural resources, and history of Indiana’s state park system. Indiana’s 32 state park properties have more than 2,000 buildings, 700 miles of trails, 636 hotel/lodge rooms, 17 marinas, 75 launching ramps, 17 swimming pools, 15 beaches, 7,701 campsites, more than 200 shelters, 160 or so playgrounds and 150 cabins. In recent years, we have focused attention on campground and cabin improvements, filling full-time and seasonal staff positions, and continuing a tradition of excellence in interpretation and in hospitality at Indiana State Park inns. We have a new 5-year plan, based on public responses to our Centennial Survey (more than 10,000 responses) and input from staff. It focuses on facilities and trails, improving efforts to manage our natural resources and remove invasive species, investing in technology, looking at ways to be more environmentally responsible, and training and support for park staff. The Bubcarboniferous limestone area of southern Indiana contains many sink holes and caves within its bounds. This area is, for the most part, embraced in the counties of Owen, Monroe, Lawrence, Washington, Orange, Harrison and Crawford. Going southward from the center of the State, the sink holes first become a prominent feature of the surface in eastern Owen and western Morgan Counties, and are found in num­ bers thereafter, in the area mentioned, until the Ohio River is reached, beyond which, in Kentucky, they are said to be still more numerous, in Sink many portions of the State averaging 100 to the square mile. These sink holes vary much in size, sometimes being but a Holes. rod or two across, and again embracing several acres in extent. They are, for the most part, inverted cones or funnel shaped cavities, and, where small, usually have the sides covered with a matt~d growth of vines and shrubs. Where larger, trees of varying size are often found growing from the scanty soil on the sides, or from the bottom of the sink. If one will examine closely the lowest point of a sink hole, he will usually find a crevice or fissure through the limestone, or sometimes a la~ge opening which, if it be possible to enter, will be found to lead to an underground cavity-a cave. Both sink holes and caves not only owe their origin, but usually their entire formation, to the slow, unceasing action of rain or carbonated water upon the limestone strata in which they occur.

    SHAWNEE KARST PRESERVE MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT This MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT is hereby entered into by and between the Indiana Karst Conservancy hereinafter referred to as IKC, and The Nature Conservancy, hereinafter referred to as TNC. PURPOSE: To ensure that the land acquired with financial assistance from TNC is devoted to long-term conservation uses that are consistent with TNC’s conservation goals, which are to help ensure that a large portion of the Donaldson/Shawnee Cave system is not impeded by increased impervious surface and water quality degradation through above-ground land practices. PURPOSE OF IKC: The Indiana Karst Conservancy (IKC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and conservation of Indiana's unique karst features. The IKC was formed by concerned individuals when it became apparent that no similar group was actively protecting such features for their inherent geological, biological, and historical importance. The purposes of the IKC are the management, protection, and acquisition of the karst areas in southern Indiana. The IKC also supports research and promotes education related to karst and its appropriate use. Many of today's abuses in karst areas arise from lack of understanding and knowledge. PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: The Shawnee Karst Preserve is a 50.31-acre tract located on State Road 60, approximately 4 miles east of the junction of State Road 37 & State Road 60 in Mitchell, Indiana, Marion Township, Lawrence County, Indiana. The property is also located approximately ¼ mile south of Spring Mill State Park. A legal description is attached as Exhibit A. This property is characterized by numerous large sinkholes and one significant cave entrance.

Lewis ABSTRACT Pseuaotremia conseroata is a troglobite described from Seven Springs Cave in Harrison County, Indiana. The species is most closely related to Pseudotremia carterensis occurring in eastern Kentucky. As a result of several recent bioinventory projects in Indiana caves, many new records of millipeds are now known and listed herein for 13 species. These include new localities fur the poorly known troglomorphic species Pseudotremia nefanda , P. indianae, Trichopetalum uncum, and Conotyla bollmani. The discovery of Pseudopol,dtsmus collinus in a Jennings County cave represents the nrst record from Indiana and a sign incant range extension fur this Appalachian species. In 1996 The Nature Conservancy initiated a biological inventory of caves in the 600 square mile Blue River basin of southern Indiana. This region is one of the premier karst areas of the United States, containing hundreds of caves and springs inhabited by a unique assemblage of troglobit:es, many of which are endemic to the region. During the first year of this survey a new species of troglobitic milliped of the genus Pseudotremia was discovered and is being described herein. This opportunity is also being taken to present a synopsis of our current knowledge of cavernicolous millipeds in Indiana. The early records of numerous collectors such as Cope (1872), Packard (1873), and Blatchley (1897) in Indiana caves was summarized in Banta's (1907) classic work on the fauna of Mayfield's Cave, in Monroe County, Indiana.
