AUGUST 2019 Let’s Talk History JTV’s In Your Neighborhood is back, and is taking it to the classroom, focusing on the Garden State’s important and diverse history. This History special will profile different periods in New Jersey’s history, with Mary Alice Williams providing an introduction with highlights of historical events in each time period. Who lived in this region before it was colonized? Raven Santana will explore what life was like for the Native American indigenous people before European Nsettlers arrived, how they lived during the colonial era, and how they struggled to maintain their identity through the years up until now. Another segment concentrates on the Underground Railroad and the importance of New Jersey as a part of that pathway to freedom, as explained by NJTV News correspondent Michael Hill. What is the history of sports in our state? We look at the first organized baseball game being played in Hoboken to the first college football game between Rutgers and Princeton. NJTV News correspondents David Cruz and John Reitmeyer highlight New Jersey’s role in the development of modern sport, and dwell on some personal memories these two reporters have.
