All the Baby Boks had left to contest after being out-played and out-thought by the French team and coaches, was the bronze medal in the 3rd/4th playoff match against hosts Argentina.

To their credit, they picked themselves up off the canvass and dominated ‘los Pumitas’ in that match and took the bronze medal, again. Griquas came out with a plan and implemented it to perfection, putting Pumas onto the defence and forcing them to chase the game. Going into the last quarter, Griquas led 21-8. Pumas fought back and scored but the missed conversion still left them eight points adrift. But then Griquas scored again and took the game completely away from the champions. Final score 28-13.

Page 6 Jaguares Success is No Fluke – Jake

Speaking of Jeppe oldboys (see the previous page), one of the more famous of the clan is World Cup- winning former Springbok coach, Jake White. Not known for being shy about sharing his opinion, our editor’s old school chum reckons that the success of the Jaguares in this year’s Super Rugby competition is no accident.

He makes the assertion in a column this week on AllOutRugby.com:

“In 2012, the Boks failed to beat Argentina for the first time and they suffered their first loss in the Los Pumas rivalry in 2015. This year, the Jaguares are "It’s great for rugby in Argentina and for the Pumas Super Rugby’s SA Conference champions. that, through the Jaguares, they’re getting the publicity and experience of playing under pressure in knockout “I can’t say it’s come as a surprise, because rugby games on the big stage... values breed success. My son enjoys Superbru and he won his pool by backing the Jaguares in every “People have said it’s unfair because the Jaguares are game. an international side. I don’t agree with that because when the Crusaders, Blues and Brumbies were dominating Super Rugby, the majority of their squads were also international players. Historically, the dominant teams have the most international players.”

And that, right there, is the nub of the issue. There is little doubt that Argentina chose to use Super Rugby 2019 as an extended national trial for the World Cup. In so doing, the coaching staff has brought in and tested possible new talent at every opportunity.

But we digress. The ever verbose Jake has a lot more to say about exactly how the Jaguares and Argentina have achieved what they have in the past few season.

For your weekend viewing pleasure

Our trusty Ultimate Rugby app has let us down this week – in a manner of speaking – because the only matches it lists for this weekend are the Super Rugby semifinal (see schedule alongside). But actually, there is some other rugby on the go this weekend.

The U13 Craven Week and U16 Grant Khomo Week competitions (click the “Upcoming” tab on the right to see the fixtures) are playing out in Mpumalanga and will come to a climax on Saturday (and are being streamed).

The SA Rugby U21 Championship should also ongoing this weekend with three fixtures planned but, as far as we can tell, it is not being televised anywhere. Unless you can find a streaming site (and if you do, please alert us) you’ll have to go down to one of the three stadiums where the matches are being played on Saturday at around 1pm.

And that’s all the action we could find for this weekend. Perhaps we should all use this relative lull in the rugby calendar over the next few weekends as an opportunity to store up brownie points for the coming Rugby Championships and subsequent World Cup in Tokyo?
