  • Gloria Allred Statement
Contact: Gloria Allred (323) 653-6530 E-mail: [email protected] Today, we are on the agenda of the California State Athletic Commission to appeal a decision by fight officials to stop Christy Martin’s last fight against Dakota Stone at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 4, 2011. We will argue that a discriminatory double standard, based on gender and sexual stereotyping, played a major role in the decision to terminate the bout, resulting in depriving Christy Martin of her 50th victory in a professional boxing match. Christy Martin is the Women’s Super Welterweight Boxing Champion of the world. She was the first woman athlete in any sport to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Last November, her then husband is alleged to have attempted to murder her by stabbing her, shooting her and pistol whipping her. He 1 has been arrested and is in custody, awaiting trial in October on a charge of attempted murder. Despite this horrific experience, Christy was determined to continue to fight and win her 50th victory. After being released from the hospital, she began intensive training and the fight that she had hoped to win finally took place on June 4, 2011 against Dakota Stone. This was not the first bout between Ms. Martin and Ms. Stone. In fact, Ms. Martin had soundly beaten Ms. Stone on September 9, 2009 and Ms. Martin actually did so with a broken hand. In the June 4, 2011 fight, in the fourth round and with Christy ahead, Ms. Martin suffered an apparent hand injury to her right hand; however, she continued to fight hard for the rest of the round and used her right hand a number of times.

For Immediate Release: December 3, 2020 Cleveland Cavaliers Unveil 2020-21 City Edition Uniform as an Ode to Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Roots Cavs and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Team Up to Open “Cleveland Amplified” Exhibit at the Museum Exclusive City Edition Collection Available at Cavs.com/Shop Cleveland’s rock and roll history began in the 1950’s when a new genre of music was introduced to a mainstream audience by Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed. On his WJW-AM radio show, Freed started to play the rhythmic and soulful songs that made the kids dance in the aisles at the local Record Rendezvous store, and with that, he popularized African American music called “rhythm and blues” to a new audience craving the urban vibe. He coined it “rock and roll.” Freed went on to organize the Moondog Coronation Ball featuring a lineup of R&B artists that drew an estimated 20,000 fans outside and inside the 11,000 seat Cleveland Arena on March 21,1952. Considered the first-ever rock and roll concert, it foreshadowed a city that was passionate about its music. In the 1970’s Cleveland’s impact grew with the emergence of progressive rock station WMMS 100.7 FM and the Agora concert venue, both credited for shining the spotlight on little-known artists like Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and many others, solidifying the city’s reputation as a breakout destination for music’s rising stars. Through the decades Cleveland’s music scene has continued to thrive and evolve.

  • Boxing, Masculinity and Identity
Boxing, Masculinity and Identity Boxing, with its extremes of violence and beauty, discipline and excess, has always been a source of inspiration for writers and filmmakers. Permeated by ideas of masculinity, power, ‘race’ and social class, boxing is an ideal site for the exploration of key contemporary themes in the social sciences. Boxing, Masculinity and Identity: The ‘I’ of the Tiger explores the changing sociology of identity – especially gender identity and the meaning of masculinity – through the sport and art of boxing. Drawing on ethnographic research as well as material from film, literature and journalism, the book takes in the broad cultural and social terrain of boxing. It considers the experience and understanding of: • Masculinity and gendered identities. • Physical embodiment: mind, body and the construction of identity. • Spectacle and performance: links between public and personal social worlds. • Boxing on film: the role of cultural representation and spectatorship. • Methodologies: issues of authenticity and ‘reality’ in the social sciences. Boxing, Masculinity and Identity will be of great interest to those following courses in sociology, sport, gender studies and cultural studies.
