From Behind the Desk... Welcome to the September issue of the One Tree Hill Grapevine. Most of our regular reports are in, plus a new location to guess “Where in One Tree Hill?”. It is good to see some more local articles, and a focus on important people who have contributed to our community in many ways. One Tree Hill Progress… President’s Report Hi everyone, Thank you to all the members and visitors who attended our monthly Progress meeting which was held on Thursday night, 9th August. It is not easy to get away from the fireplace on these cold nights, but your commitment to the community is very much appreciated. On behalf of the One Tree Hill Progress Association I would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Pat Beck to her family and friends. Pat was one of our past treasurers and a long-term resident of the One Tree Hill Community. Pat will be sadly missed. The One Tree Hill area has experienced some concerning break-ins and thefts of recent months. As a community it is important to look out for each other, notice and report suspicious behaviour and make sure you keep your house, vehicle and property safe and secure. The police report within this Grapevine is very concerning. You may notice some new signs promoting our Community Market, held on the first Saturday of each month, appearing on selected sites around the district. Thank you to David Kerrison for organising their production. The Market is trying very hard to offer a range of products that are useful and attractive to residents, please support these initiatives. Thanks & Regards, Ian Slater, President, One Tree Hill Progress Association

One Tree Hill Progress… Rate Payers Sub-Committee Report Councillors Standing Against Rate Payers The Rate-Payers subcommittee continue to observe the City of Playford Ordinary Council Meetings and the concerns continue. During the progress of the meeting on Tuesday 24th July 2018 there were lengthy discussions around shopping trolleys and around rate capping. I found it interesting as the councillors acknowledged rate payers’ opinion and support for the legislation but were verbally expressing their stand against it, saying services would be at risk, resulting in cuts. One of the highlighted possible cuts was rural roads. Item 15.3 of the agenda, Local Government (Rate Oversight) Amendment Bill 2018 resulted in the moving of a motion to take to the LGA. The City of Playford opposes the Bill and this was CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Therefore all councillors present voted against rate payers’ opinion. For further details, please refer to the minutes of the meeting on the City of Playford Internet Web page. When it came to the Grenville Hub – Concept Plans (Item 15.5) the $5.189 million approved spending was carried without discussion. It was moved by one of our own ward 3 councillors. Who is asking the tough questions, “what is the return to the ratepayer”, in financial and socio economic terms? I would say the City of Playford is very concerned about the rate capping legislation. I doubt the next great city can happen without the need to raise rates again, again and again. Have you heard of the Fremont Park upgrade, where the City of Playford plans to spend $23.5 million? What effect on rates will this have long term? I think we the rate payers are entitled to know! It is my opinion that the 2017 Rate review policy was not only aggressive on Ward 3 residents, it was also misleading. It stated that the size of the pie for rates did not change but that was after the discretionary rebates were applied. Therefore the size of the pie did increase and significantly so, whenever they wished. For anyone wishing to know where the councillors stood on the rate review policy, refer to the MINUTES of STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING (Tuesday 11th April 2017) and see 5.2 Rating Policy Review where a division was called. The introduction of rate capping will assist ratepayers but is the rate cap only on total rate revenue? If so, this does not stop the council from shifting the commercial rates to the ward 1 and 3 rate payer, as they were in the Rate Review Policy 2017. There has been a request for confirmation on this matter forwarded to the minister. Until next month, all the best. One Tree Hill CFS — Incident Report August 2018

Another quiet month which is quite amazing considering the wet and stormy weather we have endured over the last four weeks. There have been three car accidents, two involving trees, and one call to burning furniture by the side of the road. None of the car accidents involved serious injury however any accident will cause disruption to every day life and are always significant to the people involved. The bad weather seems to be continuing a bit longer, so as always please take care and drive to conditions. The weather bureau is predicting a drier than usual Spring and I am sure that many of us can’t wait.

CFS RECRUITMENT DRIVE Ever thought of joining the CFS?, Well, now is the time. Many of you will have seen the recruiting signs outside of the CFS shed marking the start of our recruitment drive. It was very pleasing to see three new people turn up on Monday night interested in joining but we are still looking for more and we are particularly keen to get more people who can turn out for day time call-outs. What does it involve you ask? CFS is a rewarding community activity fully funded out of the State government. All members are provided with many opportunities for training and no-one is permitted to man a truck without first passing a Police Check and a basic Fire Fighting course. While we are looking for drivers, apart from the obvious licence requirements, people interested in driv- ing appliances will need to gain fire ground experience before being assessed as being suitable to drive in emergency sit- uations. Members are provided with full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including boots, gloves, helmet, goggles and the familiar yellow uniform and after passing the initial course you will be provided with a digital pager for incident notifica- tion. Members are expected to attend on Monday nights for training to enhance and maintain skills, which is especially important during quiet periods such as this month. You are not expected to turn up for all incidents, however we do ask that you try to make at least 20% of call-outs. As you may have seen call-outs can range from bushfires, house fires, vehi- cle accidents, fallen trees, and the occasional flood and everything in between even the occasional animal rescue. At the recent AGM it was announced that long time stalwart and former Captain of the One Tree Hill CFS, Roger Brown was finally hanging up his helmet after well over 30 years of active service. There is a tribute to Roger elsewhere in the Grapevine but I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Roger for his leadership, friendship and support over the years. For general information please contact OTH Duty Phone on 8280 7055. You can also visit the CFS website at http://www.cfs.sa.gov.au or phone 1300 362 361. Garry Walsh One Tree Hill CFS

What’s flowering in my garden today? It’s been a cold winter with some rain but more will be very welcomed. Some Correas are still in flower along with the Thryptomenes, some Grevilleas, Croweas and Hardenbergias and other plants. Camellias are in full flower and the Daffodills are bursting into flower following the early Jonquils. Everywhere I look, I am captivated by the golden blossoms of the Wattles. Acacia myrtifolia is at it’s glorious best at the moment but Acacia pycnantha with it’s larger brilliant golden yellow blossoms is truly magnificent. Acacia pycnantha, Australia’s national floral emblem, has a dark brown/black trunk and branches supporting large mid green tough leaves and it’s golden blossoms. Many insects are attracted to these strongly perfumed blossoms and the seeds in the pods become a source of food for the Eastern Rosellas during late Spring and Summer. You may be lucky enough to have one of these trees in your garden. If not, take time to admire the many that grow and are in blossom along our roadsides. When the Wattles are in blossom, Spring is coming. Just beautiful.

One Tree Hill Soccer Club Celebrates U/11s Success

2018 sees the One Tree Hill Soccer Club celebrate their 20th season. This year the club has entered 6 Junior Teams in the E&DJSA (U6, U8, U9, U11, U13 & U15) with 2 Senior teams in the Division 2 of SAASL. The club has had some great results this season already with the seniors, U13 & U15 teams sitting mid-table in their respective competitions. This season has seen the U11 side lead the Division 4 competition for most of the season.

With 3 games left to play the team, who are coached by Dave Darmenia, currently sit 7 points clear at the top meaning one more win will see them win the 2018 title. (Editor’s update—they won!) One Tree Hill Soccer Club has only had one other team win the league competition in its 20 years. That team back in 2008 in the clubs 10th season was the U10 side coached by Simon Lane. This year the club has welcomed many new players and their families across all age groups with the majority from the modified rules teams (U6 & U8). Hopefully with the growth in 2018 the club can build to be bigger and stronger for the next 10 years. Community News… In Memory of Pat Beck Many of us were saddened by the passing of Pat Beck in early July in her 80th year. Pat had been a long time resident of One Tree Hill since the 1970s. She spent the last 29 years sharing her life with Richard and Jill Wilson and their family. She was a person of many gifts and abilities – teacher , deputy principal at Elizabeth West High (later Para West Adult Campus), author of two accounting books, musician, sportswoman, traveller including a year teaching in Tonga, a lover of animals, and a lover of the sea, fishing, crabbing and sailing. Pat contributed to the One Tree Hill community as a treasurer of the Progress Association and as a member of the One Tree Hill Uniting Church – and a treasurer there too. A well attended service of celebration for her life was held at the One Tree Hill church on 6th July She was a person of faith, resilience and always cared about others. She was small of stature but she had a big impact on many. We will miss her greatly. Jill and Richard Wilson

Community News… One Tree Hill Area Weeds of Concern Monadenia / South African Weed Orchid (Disa bracteata ) Monadenia is regarded as a significant environmental weed in South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria, and as a potential environmental weed in Tasmania. It is a highly invasive orchid from South Africa that invades native bushland and conservation areas, and competes with and replaces the native ground flora. It's presence was first recorded in South Australia in 1988, and has spread rapidly into the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Northern and Yorke, South Australian Murray-Darling Basin, and South East NRM regions. By 1991 it had reached One Tree Hill, Mt Gawler and Mt Crawford Forest. Monadenia has a rosette of long narrow green leaves, often with a reddish/purple tinge on the underside, which appear from the underground tuber in Spring (about October). It grows a replacement tuber each year, usually resulting in two bulbs being present. The flower spike is 15-30 cm tall and and is clothed all up its stem with a series of overlapping narrow green leaves. It has up to 50 tiny flowers, brown to maroon in colour. When first emerging the flower stalk looks like a very thick piece of asparagus. The flowers are self-pollinating, and each plant may produce up to 2.5 million dust-like seeds, viable for at least 6 years, which continue to mature if the flower head is picked. The seed is spread by wind, on clothing, shoes, machinery and animal fur. When weeding, we use the reddish/purple tinge on the underside to identify the young plants, and the asparagus-like posture to locate the more mature plants. For isolated plants, we carefully lever the plant from the ground using a small blade or weeding tool, ensuring the new and old bulbs are removed with the plant and safely disposed of. Bush For Life, a bush regeneration program managed by the non-profit, non- government organisation Trees For Life, undertook Monadenia weeding trials in 2005. Based on those trials, for monadenia occurring in bushland, Bush For Life recommends using a Weedbrush (or shoe polish applicator) with Glyphosate (360 gm/litre) diluted 1:4 with water at all growth stages before flowering. Once a flower stalk is present the Tongs of Death (stainless steel kitchen tongs with sponges attached with nylon thread) may be easier to use. In large areas that are heavily infested spot spraying with Glyphosate at 1:100 including a penetrant is recommended. Care will be required to avoid killing native plants. If time is limited, remove the flower heads to prevent seed production. The flower heads should be removed before the lowest flowers are spent. The cut heads should be destroyed to ensure seed does not continue to mature once removed from the plant. The cut heads should be double bagged in black plastic bags, sealed and left in the sun to solarise for several months. Any heads found later in the season should not be touched as any contact with the stem will release thousands of tiny seeds, which can lodge in clothing and be transported throughout the property and neighbouring areas. Community News… One Tree Hill Long Term CFS Member Retirement

Recently local resident Roger Brown retired from the One Tree Hill CFS after 32 years of dedicated service. He has been an integral and valued mem- ber of our brigade since 1986, helping to keep the local community safe in emergency situations. Rog- er was the brigade captain from 1999 to 2002, be- came a life member in 2010 and won the prestig- ious super fire fighter award in 2012. Over the 32 years Roger has been a CFS member he has responded to thousands of incidents in the local area ranging from bush fires, structure fires, road crashes, flooding, fallen trees and rescues and has been involved in many strike teams all around the state and interstate. His commitment to the local community went so far as to not drink any alcohol on Christmas day or New Year’s Eve so that he would always be ready to respond and drive a truck at any call out. Roger will be sadly missed in our brigade, as a truck driver he was often the first

at the station and had a truck ready and waiting for the crews to arrive. His knowledge and experience was invaluable and made all the crew members more confident knowing that Roger was in the truck with them. On the 6th of August the brigade presented Roger with a table clock with an inscription acknowledging his commitment and dedication to the CFS and the local community. He was also presented with a bottle of French champagne to be drunk on Christmas day! Roger’s wife Pauline was given a large bunch of flowers in recognition of her amazing support of Roger’s commitment to his role in the CFS. Roger and Pauline, we thank you.
