We started off the New Year with a Forum held in Victoria. Cricket Australia kindly hosted the event at their head office in Jolimont, where Sam Almaliki, Senior Manager for Community Engagement, welcomed guests and commented “we didn’t think twice (about) sponsoring and supporting this first historic meeting of the alliance” and went on to say “our involvement with the Alliance” and went on to alliancesay “our coincidesinvolvement with with an the exciting Alliance timecoincides for withAustralian an exciting time for AustralianCricket Cricket as as we we reachreach thethe final final stages stages of developing of developing a a strategic framework for female, Indigenous, multicultural and disability cricket.” strategic framework for female, Indigenous, multicultural The Forum was attendedand by senior disability representatives cricket.” from AFL, Hockey Australia, Softball Australia, Athletics Australia, Tennis Australia, Cricket Australia, Gymnastics Wayne Bird Australia, Bowls Australia, Netball Victoria, Basketball Victoria, Swimming Victoria, School Sport Victoria and AUSRAPID’s state member organisation VICSRAPID. Guests were provided with an update on the NSIA, including information about recent improvements that had been made to some key documents and to the membership process. Presentations by Bowls Australia CEO Neil Dalrymple, AFL Community Program Manager Andrew Hughes and Basketball Victoria Manager of Bowls Australia CEO Neil Strategic Operations Karen Pearce provided an information sharing opportunity, Dalrymple which led to discussion about examples of best practice regarding the inclusion in sport of people who have an intellectual disability. The highlight of the day was a presentation by India Biesse-Fitton, an Australian representative swimmer who competes in the S14 category. India talked about the positive impact that swimming has had on her life and how she likes being treated just like everyone else when she’s in the pool. She went on to say “sometimes it’s hard getting up so early in the morning to train, but I know that’s just what I have to do if I want to swim more P.B’s and win more medals.” Last year India travelled to New Caledonia for the INAS World Swimming Championships where she won a bronze medal in the 50m backstroke. Since the Victorian Forum, a range of meetings have been held in Canberra and Sydney in March 2014. National Sport Organisations including Volleyball Australia, India Biesse-Fitton Football Federation Australia, Orienteering Australia and Cycling Australia took the time to meet with us to find out more about the NSIA and how they can get involved. The NSIA is growing and developing at a rapid pace, with 16 organisations now at various stages in gaining membership to the initiative. In addition to the meetings with National Sport Organisations, our visit to Canberra was vital in sharing key information and updates regarding the NSIA with Federal Ministers and Senators. A day at Parliament House saw us meet with five key personnel, including Travis Haslam, Adviser to the Office of the Hon Peter Dutton, Minister for Health and Minister for Sport, the Hon. Bernie Ripoll MP, Shadow Minister for Sport and Gina Schwass, Adviser to the Office of Senator the Hon Marise Payne, Minister for Human Services. The meetings went incredibly well, with consistent praise received regarding the concept and objectives of the NSIA. So what’s next for the NSIA?... We plan to host a second forum towards the middle of the year, offering National Sport Organisations the opportunity to come together as they did in November of last year at the official launch at the AIS, to share examples of good practice and case studies, and to learn from each other in relation to providing inclusive opportunities in sport for people with an intellectual disability. International tennis stars shine in Benalla Page 3 of 10 Locals gathered at Benalla Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday to watch Australian and American tennis stars battle it out. More than 80 people gathered at Benalla Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday to watch international tennis stars battle it out. The local tennis club hosted the match between Australia and the United States, featuring some of the world’s best players with an intellectual disability. Ausrapid chief executive Robyn Smith said players and spectators thoroughly enjoyed the event. ‘‘It was pleasing the way Benalla families hosted the event and were so pleased to billet the players and families, and the way that Benalla, particularly the tennis community, embraced it,’’ she said. ‘‘The players thoroughly enjoyed it, it really was a celebration of tennis.’’ Australia’s Kelly Wren defeated the US’ Brittany Tagliareni 8-1, while Mitchell James (Aus) defeated Jon Fried (US) 8-2. In the other singles games Zvi Schweitzer (Aus) defeated Ben Hadden (US) 8-3 and Sharon Morse (Aus) defeated Katherine Richards (US) 8-0. The Australian team made it a clean sweep when it took out the mixed doubles later that afternoon. ‘‘A few of the players hadn’t played on grass ever so it was such a different bounce, but everyone seemed to be very, very happy and we did a lot of exchanging of gifts and words (Sunday) night which was quite emotional,’’ Smith said. The club hosted an Australia Day barbecue for players, guests and spectators after the match, complete with pavlova, lamingtons and a spectacular Australia-shaped cake made by local Kellie Keen. The US head of delegation Barry Holman thanked the Ausrapid staff, Benalla host families and Benalla Lawn Tennis Club and said the individuals involved made the team feel at home. ‘‘It truly was a celebration of tennis, and Benalla shone,’’ Smith said. Smith said she hoped to be able to organise a similar event in the future. ‘‘It was just a great thing that Benalla did and I feel really positive about the way they carried themselves and hopefully it’ll make a difference in the future.’’ All players competed in the singles and doubles at the Australian Championships in Melbourne prior to travelling to Benalla. The players and their families were billeted by local families, and attended Benalla’s Australia Day celebrations on Sunday before the match. A big thank you to all involved. Benalla was chosen as it is the home of Ausrapid, but also and importantly to give our international visitors an Australian experience, being in a country town, attending Australia Day celebrations, staying with locals and playing on grass and of course the opportunity especially to see Kangaroos!!
