Northglenn Thornton Sentinel Website: http://northglenn-thorntonsentinel.com/ Former Colorado governor gives his two cents Roy Romer offers up some ‘real facts’ at nnual senior lobby event in Westminster Staff report - Photo by Stefan Brodsky Former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer said it’s no easy task sorting fact from fiction this election season. That was the message the longtime officeholder took to the annual Colorado Senior Lobby’s Summer Social Aug. 20 at the Covenant Village assisted living center in Westminster. “It’s hard to find the real facts from the real truth,” he said, “but keep at it.” At the age of 87, “keeping at it” is something the three-term governor and former state treasurer, senator and representative knows quite a bit about. Romer, a Democrat elected to the state’s top seat in 1986 and re-elected two more times in 1990 and 1994, was the last three-term governor in Colorado. Speaking to seniors on how to identify campaigning falsehoods, Romer was joined by veteran congressman and fellow Democrat Ed Perlmutter, who is up for re-election in the state’s 7 Congressional District. Perlmutter talked about recent congressional votes on matters like the “doc fix” — regarding the formula by which doctors are paid under Medicare — and Social Security disability. “We … helped improve that significantly in terms of people who need help, that fund is going to last longer than originally contemplated,” he said.

Perlmutter also discussed what he said were positive impacts of the Affordable Care Act on the “solvency of Medicare funds,” and talked about long-term plans for Social Security. “Social Security is pretty solid until about 2034, but we need to plan to make sure that it’s stable for many years after that,” he said. Following the discussion on issues, Perlmutter talked about action. “I think seniors need to participate in their country and have great citizenship in terms of voting,” he said. “There are a lot of ballot issues, a lot of judges up, and obviously, from the presidential election on down, important races everywhere we look. “Seniors should be up to speed on all of those elections and should be prepared to vote the day they get their ballot,” Perlmutter added, noting ballots should be received mid-October. Six additional legislators were honored with “Serving Our Seniors” awards, including state senators Beth Huminek Martinez (R-Northglenn) and John Kefalas (D-Fort Collins), and representatives (R-Montrose), Jessie Danielson (D-Wheat Ridge), (D-Fort Collins) and Lois Landgraf (R-Fountain). State Sen. , who represents Senate District 31 including downtown and north-central Denver and portions of Adams County, was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. Steadman grew up in Westminster and graduated from Westminster High School and Regis University. Northglenn Thornton Sentinel Website: http://northglenn-thorntonsentinel.com/
